Ok I have 1 year old pinstripes. I know getting new heads will make my toms sound better in the recordings I am making currently for a project.

My question is which heads are the best for recording? If it helps most of the tom sound will be from the 2 overhead mics, as I have a Shure 4 mic kit.

Also if this helps, I like the sound of the toms on metallicas reload album.

Remo Clear Emperors.

Lars Ulrich used clear pinstripes top, coated ambassadors bottom for Reload. Emperors will probably work too. Remember that the studio usually has much more impact on the sound than heads and tuning do.

Yea but lars also had about 20 mics, $1,000,000 studio gear, an elite producer etc.
I mainly just need more toms in my mix. I have stripes now, and they dont cut through enough. I only have 2 overheads to capture, so this is why it is an issue.

i'd go with coated emporers on top and clear ambassadors on the bottom. i've recorded at my house and they sound pretty good since my basement is horrible for acoustics. i used pin stripes on my last session and you can barely hear the toms so steer clear of them.

Ok well I decided I wanted to go with coated 2 ply heads, so Im thinking either Remo Coated Emporers or Evans G2 Coated.

Are these basically the same thing, or is one companies head in this category more durable... deeper sounding.... warm... etc I know at the pearl forum people swear by Evans G2 coated over Evans G1 clear

I recently recorded our EP with Tama Starclassics and Evans G2 coated over G1's. I liked the sound alot. You can hear what they sound like at www.myspace.com/remnant

I used 8x7 , 10x9 , 12x10 , 14x12 toms ( all coated G2 ) The snare was a Tama Stewart Copeland with a coated ambassador.

That is what I was thinking!
