Again thanks for all the answers to my current dilema that you have all shared!

i have decided the best way forward:

to relieve my drum frustrations i am going to sell my mapex m birch, buy an e-kit for about 6 months. then (after a BIG pay rise as i will be qualified) buy an awesome kit!

so to make it worth while id like to hear some suggestions for set ups on the following budget: ( i know there may be more drums out there when the time comes but let see what we got now!)

£600 - Cymbals - 1 Ride, 2 Crashes, Hi Hats, China and a Splash.

£1700 - 5 Peice Kit with hardware. (or a 4 peice if you think)

i play indie down to some heavy stuff - deep and loud is how i like it.

i will be shopping over the next 6 months so i have plenty of time to make a descision.

thanks again

Have a look at the Yamaha Oak Customs - they're supposed to be good and loud and I would guess within your budget for a shell pack. I also hear that Mapex Saturns and Orions are good, but I've never played one. Perhaps you could also look at the Sonor 3007.Your cymbal budget might be a bit short, dependant on what you want. For instance, I have Sabian crashes, ride, chinas and splashes. My 22" HH Power Bell ride cost £220, HHX 18" crashes around £150 each (2x) 20" HHX China was £174, 18" HHX China was £146 and my 8" AAX splash was a steal at £30 new and 10" around £60ish. It depends on what you want but IMO I've got a top line setup and it costs, but is well worth while. FYI, my Yamaha Recording Customs (See my thread in your gear) cost a total of about £1850ish and my snares are all extra on top of that (Mapex Bronze was £250ish, my Alu custom snare is gonna cost £625... it all adds up, but try to see it as an investment).

Hope that helped a bit.

Anyone who wants to look at the oaks I always give the disclaimer that you absolutely need to play them in person first. Oak is a very bright, loud, harsh (to my ears) wood. I hated my oak custom kit. It's definatley not for everyone. I can play maple or birch (haven't tried mahogony or beech yet) with no reservations but I can't say the same about oak.

thought id increase the budget to:

£1000 - Cymbals

2 Rides - 1 Rock, 1 Jazzy
Hi Hats
2 Crashes
1 China
1 Splash

£2000 - Drums 4/5 peice (inc hardware)

thanks - cant wait to start shopping and trying

OK, now we're talking (re: cymbals)... for the rock one look into the Sabian HH rock ride. Their stage crashes are good too in the HHX range. I hear the Manhattan line is good for Jazz sounds. Look at the Yamaha range and see if you spot anything that stands out, I'd stand by these drums as being some of the best in the world.

With that budget you can really have some fun!

That kit catches my eye everytime. Plus you would have 400 left for a seriously good snare. Cymbals are so personal and with a grand you can really buy what you want so for that I'd just let your ears guide and have a really geeky few hours online looking and sound samples to narrow down your search.

For Cymbals.

Get in contact with Jamie From Saluda and get some custom made to your specs.

A ride, 3 crashes, a set of hat, and a china are gonna cost me $771.50 american
