hi

can you convert an acoustic kit to electric by using a module, mesh heads and triggers?

simple answer-
yes

slightly more detailed-
yes, but don't forget about the cymbals if you plan on making those electric! also make sure you don't skimp on the module, because to convert your kit to an electric, only to have it sound similar or marginally better would be a waste of $500+ .

I thought about doing this, but for my needs, i wanted something portable, so i got a TD-6KXT. This way, i've got that, plus I can always convert my acoustic kit at a later time and use the module on that (i'm thinking of doing that- i have an open aux, tom4, and crash2 port, so i might trigger a Pintech practice cymbal and convert two drums off my old drum kit.)

i can get a TD3 module and the triggers for £400

not sure how much mesh heads are.

thing that stops me getting a TD3 is the rubber pads so rather than spend £1200 for the TD6 id rather spend £600 on my acoustic and have all mesh heads. i have 2 kits so the portability is not an issue.

how much are mesh heads for a 4 peice kit?

not addressed the cymbal issue yet - pintech sound good - any links?

mesh head generally run about the same as any other head- I'd look into the Pearl MFH heads- they are the same as on their Rhythm Traveler sets, and are pretty cheap ($5.99-$19.99 for sizes 8" through 22"). Not sure how easy those are to come by in the U.K. but if you can, they'll be your best bet for your purpose.

For the cymbals, I'd recommend the Roland CY-8's or CY-12's . That way you can use the dual trigger capability, and they're more reliable than the lower end Pintech and Hart Dynamics cymbals.

I was quoted not much more than that by Newcastle Drum Centre for the TD6 module I think. I'll check tomorrow.

Just worked out the price of the triggered acoustic:

TD3 Module £250.00 (from my local drum shop)
Mesh 13 £4.06 + Postage (Pearl Rythm Traveler heads from Amazon.com)
Mesh 14 £5.58 + Postage (Pearl Rythm Traveler heads from Amazon.com)
Mesh 16 £6.09 + Postage (Pearl Rythm Traveler heads from Amazon.com)
Mesh 22 £9.14 + Postage (Pearl Rythm Traveler heads from Amazon.com)
Snare Trigger £53.10
Tom Trigger £35.10 x 2
Bass Trigger £53.10
Cymbal Pack £494.10

Triggers and cymbals from

http://www.drumwright.co.uk/pages/department_sublist.asp?F_SubCategoryID=595

works out at £945 - is the extra £345 (compared to a TD3 for £600) worth it considering you get real drums? then again its the cymbal pack that knocks the price up! with out cymabls its £450.

any thoughts?

I've seen those Traps sets before, and was intrigued by them. The module isn't as good, but its a cool set nonetheless. They were out at NAMM this year, but I wasn't, so I didn't get a chance to use them. As to your predicament-
I think its personal preference whether its worth the 345 more. That cymbal pack is some killer cymbals, they may be a little excessive if you are trying to cut cost (plus I don't recall the TD-3 supporting the double triggering of the cymbals), but if not, they are great cymbals. I would seriously consider going up to a TD-6 module though-1200 sounds vs the 100 of a TD-3... the TD-6 has a lot more and better features too that any serious drummer will absolutley love (even things such as steel drums, hi-hat pedal tunable tympani, all that cool stuff) and it allows for double triggering of cymbals snare and toms, which is a great feature. I think in the long run you'll be much happier with a TD-6. I know that I have been.

Yes you can and I've actually played on such a thing.

Back when the PDP Chameleon kits were still being made, they one setup just like that at a local GC.
They simply flipped the mesh head sides "up", clamped on a bunch of DDrum triggers and plugged it all into a TD-6 brain and ran it through a Roland keyboard amp.

Sounded great.
