I'm buying a new Pork Pie kit as well as cases for the drums. I'm wondering about the sizes I should buy. The drums are 12X9, 14X12(floor w/legs), 16X14 (floor w/legs) and a 20X18 virgin kick. I have had some people tell me I should buy a size bigger for all these drums due to the mounts. Others have said buy exactly the same size case as the drum. These are my first drum cases, so I'd love to hear what people's experiences are.
Thanks!

All drum companies have different hardware, some bigger than others. It's been my experience with both cases and bags that the exact size is sometimes tough to work with. They can fit too tight and take more time to set in there and get out. On the other hand going too big would have them banging around a little bit. I'd see about going an inch bigger all around if you can. If not, worse case scenario: you'll have cases that fit like a glove.

I have bought many cases over the years and even had custom cases made.
If you have authentic Gauger RIMS mounts, or mounts in that style (like tama Starcasts), you should order an inch or two bigger. If you have DW style mounts or shell mounts, get the same size case as drum.
For floor toms, there are usually special bags that say "sized for floor toms" and these will have the leg mounts already factored into the size.
What kinds of cases are you looking at getting?

I am probably getting XL Elite cases. None of the companies I have checked out have asked about RIMS mounts or if the drums are floor toms with legs. Interesting.

Ask Bill or one of his Pork friends. 818 992-0783...they will be happy to nswer this question. I have elite-aire cases and the way they are made a 16x16 tom fits snug and secure in a 16x16 case.

Yeah, I emailed Bill and he suggested going to a bigger size, but the company I'm buying the cases through (Interstate Music) said I don't need to go to a larger size that the XL Elites are big enough to accomodate the drums. Since I have no experience buying cases, I figured I'd post this and see what people had to say.

I just bought cases for my new PorkPie set. I went with the Air Elite series by XL Specialty. For the Toms I bought the excact size case as my drums and they fit perfectly. I do have a 14x12 and 16x14 toms , but they do not have the floor tom legs. They fit snug in there case and do not have room for the legs. For the floors I would got with the next size up. I have not purchased a case yet for my 20x20 kicks but I plan on getting a Air Elite case for them soon. I did buy a classic series case for my 28x20 kick and it fits perfect. I went with the classic series only because they do not make a 28in case in the air elite. I purchased mine from www.midwestpercussion.com and they were the cheapest that I have found. You might try them and save some cash. Also there was no extra charge for colors. I can send picks if you want , just let me know.

Easily the best info I have heard about the cases! Thank you very much! So, I am getting the exact same size floor toms as you have. I'm guessing from your comment that I should go up to a 15" and a 17", is that correct?
I would definitely love to see pictures!
Thanks again!

OK , here are some pics. I will let you look and be the judge. It looks like the 14in tom fits more snug than the 16. You might be able to get away with the 16 w/ legs but the 14 seems to be a tight fit. As for the 12x9 that will fit perfect and look just like the 14 in the picture. Hope this helps!
