Getting rid of all my old cymbals, and getting a Sabian crash, ride and a pair of hats. What I want from these cymbals is that they are versatile, I want to play everything from jazz to melodic death metal on these. I dont really know what kind of hats or crash I want, sure they should be 14" and 18". But the ride must be pretty dark, with not so much sustain, but with a really cutting bell.

Some suggestions I've gotten 14" HHX Groove, 14" AAX-celerator/HHX-celerator hats. 18" AAX Dark crash, 18" HHX Stage crash. 21" HH Raw bell dry ride, 21" HHX Dry ride, 21" HHX groove ride.

What do you think?

Some cool cymbals you`ve listed there.
My personal opinion and list would be this:

14" K Hi-hats, 18" Avedis Medium Crash (?) and a 22" K Ride.

oh, but as for the ride, Zildjian made up a new Ride: 24" K Light Ride. It`s thin, traditional finish, and from what I´ve heard, it is beautifully unique and versatile.

okay, overall it is totally up to you...so, just some small tips. I hope I could help a bit. =)

If you only want Sabian and want them to be versatile I would go:

HHX Groove hats, 18 HHX stage crash ( you can't go wrong with HHX crashes), and the HH Raw bell dry ride.

I have a 18'' HHXtreme crash, and it is awesome! It is so extremely (haha) dark and trashy but still works fine for lighter stuff. It has many sides! It works great for everything. I have played it in a jazz band, in a rock/metal band, and in a punk band, it worked great for all of the gigs!

The groove hats are really cool. I would also suggest the evolutions they're so versatile. As for the ride, the groove ride would be my choice. Great bell as well as crash ability making it a little more versatile, it does have a little wash so you might lose interest but its still a great cymbal. And the crash, maybe check out the vaults pretty versatile otherwise evolutions and hhx stage crashes are good choices.

Oh yes, and these Sabians would I recommend (sorry, in my previous post I just listed zildjians):

14" Groove hats, 18" HHX treme crash (great unique sound, trashy qualities) and a 20" Stage Ride.

I think that`s a pretty versatile set...

Im going with Karl's first post. Although they are not sabian cymbals, check those out. The K line is an amazing cymbal line with a somewhat dark sound, and incredibly versitile.

No Ziljdians this time ;)

So, we can all agree at the 14" groove hats? Do I remember wrong or did you have those Drummer Karl? I tried the hhx grove ride, a bit to much wash. So for rides it's down to HH RBDR or HHX Dry ride now really. I do like thinner crashes, the HHXextreme sounds pretty wild and loud by the name, true?

Nope, I have got some HHX Evolution hats, 14".
btw, also great hats but I think not as versatile as the groove hats.

overall a personal thing, try them if you can...and choose what you like most.

As for the Ride, I'd go with the HH Vintage Ride. Such a beautiful cymbal.

For HiHats, i'd suggest the Groove hats or AA regular hats.

AND FINALLY FOR THE CRASH, i'd buy the HHXplosion.

I'd also recommend the 14" HHX Stage hats - they're pretty versatile and fit well in rock/metal situations.

K Custom Dry ride is VERY versitile. Little overtones. Light enough to give a small crash, thick enoungh to handle and overdrive chorus.

Can I ask...Why not Zildjian? Or any other companies such as Paiste or Bosphorus?

I have already had Paiste and Meinl, want to try something new. Zildjian is too overprized and not easy to get where I live. Same with all the other less common stuff.

Can you get the Italian UFIP cymbals in your part of the world?

Depending on your country's exchange rates with Italy, they can be a good deal.

I have a few UFIP's in my collection and they are fine cymbals bought for a reasonable price.

Grüte!

My suggestion would be to try out the Virgil Donati Saturation crashes. Don't be scared by the fact that they are signature gear (one would tend to think that a signature cymbal would sound very specific.) The Saturation crashes are very responsive, colorful and versatile cymbals.

Christopher.
