Take an eight inch splash and place it on top of snare. Use bamboo dowel sticks to hit the snare, i think. Use in conjunction with a shaker instead of hats or ride. cool effect for a pop ballad, perhaps

So instead of hitting the batter head u hit a splash? Never heard of this trick.Might have to try it some time. I have an 8" splash that I never use anyways lol.

...or you could hit the head with a stick to get a somewhat drum machine-ish snare sound. Check out some Johnny Rabb videos for examples on creative splash use.

i saw some guy do this on an Artsworld program on Sky digital here...the program was called "Jazz Soloists",and this guy was a drummer....its a regular program on teh Artsworld channel,
but bsically he did that with the splash......sounded cool.....a bit experimental....then he went on to turn his snare upside down and rub his stick along the snare for about 5 minutes, then he started playin with toy cars that made stupid noises.....and hitting his floor tom every 2 or 3 seconds for about 6 or 7 minutes....and nothing else....it was about then i turned over!!hhaha!
The upside down snare trick is actually pretty funky too,if you actually play it(apart from really denting your resonant head on the snare cos its so thin),it sounds like a marching snare....really high and really cracking....

^ right wavelength. I've been using the splash on the snare with a stick since my buddy showed Rabb to me in 2002. Plus I started playing some music where using a splash on the ride is appropriate.

My drum teacher does this with his normal sticks all the time. He does it with jazz and with rock. You can make it work out a lot of ways.

Oh so it's done with the snare drum upside down. Me being a noob for a sec thinking that the splash went on the batter head lol.

Lol, indeed! You might want to read cheese's post again. Just to save you damaging your snare drum - the splash DOES sit on the batter side for that effect. Cymbals are not to be placed on snare wires:)

:0 I always figured this trick was common knowledge~!
Johnny Rabb actually manufactures a special splash called the "Drumbal" w/ a handle on it, it's pretty much the nerdiest drumming accessory of all time, but I've got one, and I love the stupid thing XD

Here's a video of him using it (even has some really nice close ups of his technique~~!):

I wonder if it would work with a 6"? Anybody know? Maybe I'll just go try it myself, that soundsa like a cool idea.

I'm guessing a 6" wouldn't stay in place much at all. When you hit the cymbal it bounces off the head and if it partially lands on the rim then you either need to quickly push it back up onto the snare bed or it'll slide off, so the heavier a cymbal the better.
But it's at least worth a try!

It sounded really cool actually. I tried it with an AA (8") splash but I didnt like the sound so much. Then I was like " Why not try it?" So then I actually dusted off one of my old CAMBER splashes (6") and tried it. To my surprise it sounded really cool. The way it sounds so bad as a splash made it sound drastically better as this trick. I'll put up a video soon. (Please dont think I'm a loonatic, It really does sound good!)

Heh, some of these responses made me laugh. No offense, but I've seen this done many times. A member of this forum, sadly I can't remember who, uses a drumbal quite nicely. He put up a clip a few weeks ago that was awesome. Very industrial sound

Check out this video, its got some cool stuff in it, including the upside down snare one.

The Yamaha R&D department will shortly devise a device which holds the snare cymbal in place. It will feature a foot-operated throw-off switch, so you could change sounds on the fly. I'm guessing the price will be around $199,95.

Man i know....i did not say otherwise....someone merely took my words and got confused....
Splash goes on batter head...hit snare.....sound odd...
drum turn upside down....play reso head(N.B.:NO SPLASH HERE!)...make sound strange...?
just to make clear...!
haha!

Alright, so ive been having a lot of fun with this trick the last few days. One problem. Im using an 8 inch splash on a 14" snare. When i hit the head with the sticks, and i hit too close (but not touching) the splash, the splash will bounce up. If im playing fast enough, the splash will bounce off, so one edge is resting on the rim of the snare, and will slowly slide off.
Any way to prevent this? I noticed on the actual drumbals, the edges are raised up, kinda like an upside down china, but not as dramatic. Is that why they are raised?
