I'm saving up to buy a good 7 piece drumset. I didnt want to end up sticking 2 drumsets together and then inventing some oddly shaped mixture of different brands and sounds (and colours). I want a set good enough for recording to a certain extent. I found a Pearl Export series 7 piece set. Is this set suitable for recording for a start? Any other suggestions are welcome and will be greatly appreciated.
The set I had in mind is this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Pearl-Export-Double-Bass-Piece/dp/B000EZ33HS/sr=1-2/qid=1169858167/ref=sr_1_2/102-9469046-4428155?ie=UTF8&s=musical-instruments
for reasons beyond my humanly understanding, this item seems to have a picture one day and then no picture the next day... so don't expect one.

honestly no...i personally don't like the export series. whats your budget? if you can afford it i would say go for yamaha stage custom...they are fantastic and very reasonably priced. but if you like the sound of the export than go for it...just try it first if possible

I don't know when they are coming out but the new exports will feature all maple shells as well as some other upgraded features, I would shy away from the poplar ones(current), if you need it now then I would go for something else, you may spend a little more but you will get a set with built to higher standards for not much more. Some of them are the Mapex Pro M and also the Sonor Force 3005, I haven't heard one complaint about the sonors or the pro m for that fact. The new pro m's are supposed to feature the same shellls as the orion(top of the line), so I would lean towards that personally.

I play Exports and am rather happy with em. Yea they are entry level. But with the proper heads a correct tuning are a nice set of drums. Many dont like the exports, but to each thier own. Now that the Exports have undergone a change. ( check pearls site or other namm kinda threads ) They are an improvement over what I have. I gig with the exports also. But I do keep after em..

well my budget isn't too low, no fixed price. somethin around $1000 would be ok, but not too much over. Trying things here is not an option cuz there are no good music shops in the whole country (believe me). I'll check out your suggestions and ask for more oppinions if I find anything good. thanks everyone

ok I checked Mapex and Sonor but mostly its either too pricy for me or the sizes just dont match what i had in mind. The sizes I'm looking for are as follows:
Bass drum: 22" X2
Floor Toms: 18" and 16"
Rack Toms: 12" and 13" (or 12" and 14")
Snare: 14"
I found another Pearl set that matches these sizes in music123, they're a cheaper copy of the drums of Wengren from Disturbed. But its still an export series, so for now i'll overlook it. Any other suggestions?

I'm going to quote something that TomCat said sometime ago...
"Stay the F*** away from exports"
And I couldn't agree more. Poplar shells are the devil and you will find that there are much better kits for the same price or less (Yamaha Stage Custom, Tour Custom)

I'm interested to see what happens with the new maple Exports though. That said, unless they replace the ISS Mounts, I'm just not interested.

I own several kits that run the gamut from entry-level to very high-end custom drums. One of those kits is a Pearl Export with the poplar shells. Granted, they don't compare to my Sonor Designers, but for the price, they get the job done well.
They can be a little problematic with regard to tuning, but with a bit of work setting them up correctly, they sound fine. My son now plays my Pearl kit, and in all the time I have owned them, there has only been one minor issue with a wrap, that Pearl made right as soon as I notified them of it. (They just replaced the drum, no questions asked, and the shell was fine; it was just a wrinkled wrap.)
At any rate, they are what they are meant to be, decent entry-level drums that far outshine many other companies' “entry-level” offerings. Go play a set, and if you like the sound, and the price is right, don't be afraid to buy.
I saw that you mentioned that Sonor was out of your price range. Check on NOS like the 3003s or 3005s that have been sitting on showroom floor for a bit. I think you will find that you can afford them, and if you like all-birch kits, check out the Sonor 2000 series, even more affordable.

So, you're not willing to sacrifice double bass for a double bass pedal?

Honestly not really... Because I was thinking of buying a rack system for it in the future in hopes of adding alot of other items too. And not to mention I love playing on a double bass setup. I used to play on a double pedal setup (very VERY cheap drumset) but I noticed a slight difference when I experimented with a double bass setup. The feel of the pedals became more comfortable. Maybe it was the idea of using a slave pedal that made the feel slightly different, i'm not sure. The point is that I would really prefer a double bass drum setup over a single bass drum setup.
If after a long time I couldnt find anything then maybe I'll consider going for a single bass drum setup.

I actually jus got bak from my music store around half hour ago...when i was there i was actually looking at almost the same kit as you are (export, but it was the elx in black burst, with black hardware), but when i asked the guy working about it, he said for the price i should look into a tama starclassic....im getting a shell pack cuz im good for hardware and i already hav a snare...but now im interested a double bass tama starclassic right now.

Do you have a rough estimate of the price of that set?
Oh yeah, one more thing. Does anyone know a good site that has all these sets? Cuz up till now I only used amazon and music123, and they suck when it comes to drums. And since I dont like in the US, my only option is the internet... help :(

I heard they are keeping the ISS Mounts. For some reason, Pearl believes people actually like that mounting system. I'm curious as to how they will sound, but Pearl has done nothing to me in the past to impress me with a kit lower than the masters and reference series. I wasn't even too keen on the sessions.

Not to spam but where I got my set was musiciansfriend.com.
Good things are worth good money....
think about it. Do you prefer having lots of CHEAP drums or less drums but more QUALITY? Save your money.

I would most definately stay away from the Exports. I´ve played drums for 30 years and owned many kits, brands and played and tried out countless drums. The Exports are among the worst I´ve ever come across. If you´re going to record with them; all the more reason to stay away from them. Dreadfull drums IMHO. Options worth checking: Tama Superstars (birch shells), Pearl Session Studio series (birch), Premier artist series (maple or Birch), Sonor 2005 (birch) or 3005 (maple). All these are leagues above the Export.
Did I mention the Exports are really bad? ;=)

Although i dont mind exports, there are slightly better drums for the price which has been said.
My real suggestion would be to not get 2 bass drums. Save your money and get a double bass pedal. Its much more logical, and takes up much less room.

Funny, I allways found the Session Studio kits the best from Pearl, Reference and Masters included.

Hey,
its right, what they said. Quality before Quantity!!! Export? Pappel-shells? NO WAY!
For the same money you could get a 5piece Sonor 3005 or Yamaha stage custom. They would be much more better than the Export drums.
And you really don´t need 2 bassdrums. Doublebass with 2 bassdrums is better than playing with a doublebassmachine but more lovely a good bassdrum and a good doublebassmachine than two bad bassdrums with to bad machines.
Quality!
Don't go with Export.
