Well it took a few days (emailed him on tuesday) but I got an email back from Jamie. He says that building the cymbals I requested will be fun and challenging. I decided to go with a crash first, and then if I like it, do a full set of cymbals.
The cymbal I'm starting with, I requested be a 17" Glory Crash, hammered to be similar to a Sabian HHXtreme, only a bit more subtle with a tiny bit more sustain for that size. I also want some good riding characterstics if possible. Once I get the cymbal, if I like it, I'm going to do the rest of my cymbals which consist of (as I described to Jamie):
14" Black Mist Hi-Hat's - Similar to Sabian HH Duo Hats only a bit darker and drier.
20" or 21" Black Mist Ride - A cross between a Sabian HH Duo Ride and HH Raw Dry Ride. It would basically be like the Raw Dry Ride but still have the accent and crash qualities, and slightly brighter tone of the Duo ride.
19" Earthworks Crash - Hammered to be darker and drier, with good ride qualities. I want this to be a good contrast to the 17" Glory, but still blend well with it.
10" Glory Splash - Like an HHX Splash only drier, and punchier.
Jamie said this in response:
"To be honest, building this set of cymbals would be fun and
challenging. I know you want to do the one cymbal first, so if we can
nail the first one, I would request that you send the 17" Glory crash
back so we could match it to the others.
The Black Mist and Glory are very nice so we are still learning what
we can do with these. Yes, we can make the 17" Glory as you described.
Typically the Glories are big sounding, a little dry, a touch of
trash, and are medium short in decay. We can alter these
characteristics a little. The Glory would be heavier and thicker than
the HHX but the Glory is hand crafted and dryer so it reacts
differently. The added weight helps to make it heard and the hand
crafting gives it natural response."
So to start things off with the 17" Glory, I'm trading in a 16" Zildjian Orienal China Trash that I had up for sale once, I packed it, the seller backed out or something (I forgot), and it completely slipped my mind that I still had it over the last year. I also have to pay $19 which includes return shipping, which to me is more than fair for a new cymbal. He didn't mention the other trades yet for a full set, but I would be trading in my Sabian HHX Set: 14" Groove hats, 19" HHXtreme Crash, 21" Groove Ride & 10" Splash.
The downside is that if I go for the full set I'll be without cymbals for a while, but I'm trying to recover from Carpal Tunnel Surgery anyway so I haven't been playing that much in the past few weeks anyhow.
I'm also going to see about trading my Musashi for a custom 13" snare. No word on that trade yet. I was just going for a 6 or 6.5x13 Birch (if they work with birch) snare in a dark reddish walnut gloss that I think would look nice on my kit. Lugs I would just keep simple with a style that would match my Gretsch's.
I'll keep everyone posted!

That's great man. I think you will have a pretty different setup than most of us who already own Saludas. It sounds like you will have some real dry cymbals with clear tones. I'm very curious to hear your opinion when they arrive. I know when you get that first crash you will immediately ask for the rest, and not even want to send that crash back for them to match the rest. hahah!

My China Trash goes out tomorrow so they should have it on Wed and then based on what I've seen, I should have the Glory next week. I think he thinks I'll have a unique set too. I especially am looking forward to the earthy, raw look these cymbals will offer. I'm really into that sort of thing.

You won't regret going this route. Jamie is great to work with and the cymbals are great as well. I love my Saluda's!! I'm getting complements on both the sound quality and the appearance of these cymbals from the other musicians I know .

I hope we can work out a trade for a snare too. I'd actually love a whole kit, I wonder if he'll take my gretsch's, pdp shell pack, musashi and a drum throne in on trade for next to nothing :) *lol*

Oh I will :) Already planning on 12" hats, 18" china (or so) and an 8" bell/trash splash if it works out.
Still havent' heard from Jamie though since I last heard from him on Saturday night. They got my Oriental China Trash yesterday, so I'm going to have to call him. I understand if they're busy but it's alittle frustrating if email is so slow.

Call him.....he'll play you the cymbals he has as a comparison so you can hear them over the phone....it's awesome.
Go for a Voodoo china also....I have a 19" that's amazing....and....they can tweak them to your liking also!

Well, not sure how hearing something over the phone can be good :) But still cool that he'd do that. I just hope that email correspondance picks up a bit.
Yeah was thinking of a VooDoo. Have you paid for any cymbals outright? I was talking to franklinJ trying to get an idea of how much you'd actually pay ordering through them vs. th retail price.

drumgearonline.com has the prices. No, I haven't bought anything outright.
The cool thing about the phone was this.....he had one of my zildjians...and then he hit one of the mist-x crashes he as going to send...and you could hear the difference!
cool, hope you like them.
i've got 14" mist-x wavy bottom hats that i really like, and i'm thinking about getting two crashes soon, a 16" mist-x and an 18" diamond

I've decided to add a few things from Saluda.
First, while I love my Musashi, I don't like how the Oak fits with my Birch drums so much, so I'm trading that in full (yes full) plus $12 for a 4x13 Saluda Birch 10 Ply Snare. I'm getting 8 tube lugs, triple flanged hoops, and just a basic side throw off. Finish wise I want a reddish walnut finish that will semi match the front hoop on my bass drum but be a bit darker.
Then I have a bunch of stuff I'm not using like my Gretsch Catalina snare and 12" tom (and I know Im never going to use the 12. I can't put it on comfortably now that I've used a 4 piece set with a 10" tom for so long). Also a Tama Iron Cobra Flexi Glide (good condition, some hoop clamp oxidation), and a Yamaha Cymbal Holder. I want to get:
18" China - I'm thinking of something like a Sabian Jia Chinese only with a bell. I'm inquiring too if Jamie can make it with a lathed top and unlathed lip with a brilliant underside like the Jia. If he can that would be something certainly unique.
13" Hi-hats. - Same as the hi-hats I described above only in the smaller size.
I'll keep everyone posted.

Dude, you are getting the hook ups! Can't wait to hear how it all works out. As soon as I can get some more money I'm going to be ordering more cymbals.

I got an email from Jamie regarding my crash that he shipped. This is going to be a unique one. I told him that I love the look of the Glory's and Black Mist's but for this crash those models wouldn't do it sound wise. So what he did was make me a Mist-X with a "blackened" finish. I believe this is considered to be a prototype, atleast that's what the description says in the tracking (it'll be here Friday). Here is what he had to say about it:
"Your cymbal is a 17" Mist X coated in the blackening product. We have
only used this product on the Black Mists. Putting this product on the
Mist X turns it into something similar to the Earthworks series but it
has more browns and subtle colors in it. I had never used this type
finish on the Mist X series and it had good results of making it look
very similar to that one finish you said you wanted on that prototype." (the prototype that Gayspo has http://www.pearldrummersforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=266688&stc=1)

My 17" Saluda Crash is in! It's a 17" Mist-X with a "blackened" finish, kind of like a black earthworks. Here's a pic and the link to a seperate thread I made about it:

looks good. what's it sound like?

well, i got 14" mist-x hats for $154, listed online at $320. also, mine have a wavy-bottom, which added some price on. so a little less than half is what you end up paying

I posted a few threads after this one. Here is an mp3 www.handidrummed.com/17mist2.mp3
I'm not going with Saluda though. While they're great, and Jamie is a hell of a guy who will do what he can to get you the cymbals that you want, I myself need to hear what I'm getting before I get it. I'm just too decisive. So I decided to get a set of Bosphorus Turks (there's a thread on that as well that I started).
I am selling the Saluda though. $70 + shipping.
