hello

I'm going to buy Taye Studio Maple kit with 14/7 snare, but I don't know which hoops should I choose - die cast or 2,3mm triple flanged?

I've heard die cast hoops can make snare sounding flat and muffled, but I've heard some great opinions about them.

so... what are your opinions? what should I choose?

die-cast on batter.....2.3 on reso

In no way shape or form does die-cast make a snare sound "flat" or "muffled"....at least not on the 20-30 that I have ever played with cast hoops...if anything it's more "pronounced"...

I've just heard some people saying die cast hoops deaden the sound, especially on snares. anyboyd think so? cause if not, I think I'll follow larlev's advice.

If you had asked about toms, I'd say definitely go with 2.3mm because the drums can definitely be choked by the heaviness and bulkiness of the die cast.

Snares are a different story though. I have 2.3mm on one snare drum and die cast on another and I think the die cast gives the drum a bit more focus. Sort of dries it out a bit, if that makes any sense.

I always have some extra hoops lying around, so I can experiment with different options (die cast, single flange w/clips, triple flange, wood). Somehow I allways end up with the triple flange hoops. The sound is more open and ringy. But some drums tend to "like" die-casts more than others IMO. But in the end, I guess itīs a matter of each individuals tate.

The die cast hoops can focus the tone of the drum, but I don't think if this a detriment, it is just an option.

anybody know where i can get a 13" black die cast hoop for a snare? and any ideas on how much they cost? they seem to be a bit nicer on sticks than the triple-flanged rims...

I use die cast hoops on five of my snares. The rim shots and cross sticking sing out more than with triple flanged hoops.

On my brass snare I use a die cast hoop on just the batter side and get the same effect.

I think it's a good way to go if you play a lot of rim shots or cross sticks. When I play cross stick on a triple flanged hoop it sounds real thin in comparison.

Die cast makes toms tricky to tune and cuts down on tuning range in my opinion.
But Yamaha makes an extremely light aluminum die cast hoop, so in that situation it may be more user friendly.

Somehow I think Vedox has found his 13" die cast hoop by now. . .

sorry to dig up a really old thread again, but I am about to sound like an extreme amateur and potentially unworthy of owning a BB.

I bought my Ludwig BB second hand, so was never sure what hoops it has on it - it there a way of telling?

Generally speaking, most common, look where the tension rod goes through the hoop, if the lower edge is bent flat where the hole is and then bends down around the shell to the next hole, that is a triple flange. If the lower bead of the hoop goes around the tension rod opening like a round about without bending up and out it is die cast. Premier made theirs a little different, where theres was really rounded instead of flat all the way around. If your ludwig is same style as your toms, chances are they are triple flanged (stamped as opposed to made out of a die.

It could be single flanged on a BB as well, depending on whether it has claws or not.
