Aquarian Super 2

Has anyone had any experience with these heads?

To start with, i thout they were just aquarian's 2-ply head, but they are selling them aswell as a regular 2-ply head, so there must be something special about them.

I cant find much on the net, probably because they're relatively new.

From what aquarian say, they should be really good.

So. What do they sound like?

whoops sorry about that. That's what I get for being up too early.

They seem like a regular 2 ply but they've evidently done something different with them, I'd be interested in hearing and seeing these just to find out what the difference is.

Its a 2ply head but it has better attack, projection and low end. Which is what most 2ply heads lack

I plan on buying these my next time around

I have found some information about them from mikedolbear.com in the NAMM section.

"Aquarian were showing the Super 2 heads which have plies of different thicknesses. We will give more details very soon as we are getting some to review. Sounded great though and much more flexible than most twin plies."

so ill keep checking back there for a review aswell.

If I remember correctly, instead of being two plies of 7mil like most 2 ply heads, they have an upper ply of 7mil and lower ply of 5mil, so it's a thinner two ply head. I think they are the new version of those double thin heads they used to have.

Actually it's the inverse order. the upper ply is 5 mil and bottom ply is 7mil making them more open than any two ply head. The double-thin were configured like you stated.

I own Super-2 coated w/ Studio-X ring for my 12 and 16 toms on my Pearl Export kit and they are amazing!!! I love em, and have been using em for a while now.

hmmm, the only place i can find them would be about twice the price of emperors though!

well, going back to my old thread when my pinstripe broke and i played on the secound ply for a couple secounds before that went. but finally i went to a music store and reaplced it with the aquarian super II (just went downstairs to check the box and make shure thats what it was.) and i would say it sounds alil more "dead" than the pinstripe (still have a pintripe on there)
its pretty close but it doesn't ring as much as my old one did, same exact tuning because of the special lugs on my yamaha set were you can pop em out and replace the head really quik.
its got good attack and projection, band mates liked it. but it didn't ring as much and was just a quik sound. idk really how to explain it.


so even being a fan of aquarian , i would still have to recommend a pinstripe over this one.

Firstly, i'v read the reviews on the aquarian website, but they are not a clear sound explanation, just a quick thumbs-up.

And i imagine it was the version with the studio x ring that was more dead than the pinstripe, because the normal version is both thinner than the pinstripes and is not sealed at the edge.

thats a shame. Im planning on buying the Coated super-2. but heads with muffling already in them is kinda stupid (imo) because you can have a good open head or when you need to muffle you can use whatever amount was needed.

What version of Super-2 ? Clear with studio-x ring ? Do not confuse them with Perfomance II.

The total thickness of the Super-2 is 12 mil while the pinstripe is 14...

I know but the coated Super-2 with studio-x ring isn't offered at the moment. I had the answer two weeks ago directly from Roy email.

I have had coated Super 2s on my Starclassics for about a month now. They feel and sound a little bit thinner than Coated Emperors or G2s, thus more responsive. I do hear more bottom end too. I love the way that they sound, I doubt I will ever play anything else.

I tried a Super-2 coated head on my 16" x 16" maple floor tom and I love it ! It has a very focused, warm and full tone. They way I have it tuned (72 batter, 74 reso on my drum dial) it is deep and full with good sustain and no overtones. I'm most likely going to swap the clear Studio-X heads on my other toms to Super-2s.

One more thing, considering the size of the tom, the stick response is very good. It doesn't feel like a two ply head to me.

I like the Power Thins a lot. I like having more durability with the dot on a single ply head, because I like single ply heads and I just can't use them. Only thing is the thickness of the dot on the head gives it a little too much attack for a Tom head.

Yeah, I talk to Paul at BDO all the time. I can't wait for them to move, I live near transit and they will be closer to me...lol.

My impressions of the clear Super-2s with X-ring, used with Classic clears on the res side:

No muffling or dampening, of course ; )

The kit is a Mapex Saturn Studio.

- Think of a Studio-x single ply response, but without the overtones. Like a clear EC2, but much better sound at lower volumes. My 10x8 and 12x9 toms are usually problematic in regards to weird overtones when struck lightly. I'm not a heavy-handed player, so I prefer a head that sounds consistent whether I'm wailing on it, or lightly playing. This head is it. I'm convinced these are the best heads I've ever played. I've had them for 3 weeks, and played 6 or 7 3-hour sessions with them.

The ultimate compliment in my opinion came Friday night when my band played a very nicely equipped venue (Allen-Heath mixer, Meyer overheads, etc.), and the sound guy came up to me afterwards (he's a drummer) and said "Wow, those drums sound killer. What heads are those?"

If you folks have specific Qs, fire away : )

Super 2 clears on my 10 and 12 (evans resos underneath)

and a Super 2 w/ Studio X ring for my 16, (evans g2 underneath)
