My setup for a weekend gig

Hey guys!

I'm playing a gig tomorrow night, for my housemate's birthday party. She wanted a 40's theme party, and asked for a bunch of people, myself included, to be her live jazz band. There's no monetary pay, just alcoholic pay (which is just as good!) and I live with her, so it's kind of hard to turn that down.

So yeah, I took my 16x16 floor tom from my kit, set it on a pillow as a bass drum. Took my Pearl Piccolo snare, my new Bos hats, PST 5 splash, and Bos ride. The setup isn't the best, but I had limited time and resources.

Does the bass drum move much?

Does the bass drum move much?

A little. The pillow keeps it from moving forward, but it wiggles in place if I get heavy on the pedal. However, tomorrow night I'm playing with a keys/sax/fiddle combo, so I probably won't be wailing on it. It's really not that noticeable.

How do you like the hi-hats, I just ordered some Bosphorus Traditional Series hats, and I am interested in how they feel when you play them, cause I have only heard sound clips of it from Cymbalsonly.com

thats a pretty awesome kit... and i seriously mean that. If you've seen mine, you'd understand how much of a pain it is to move it and set it up at gigs. Although I played a gig the The NUmber 12 and From A Second Story Window a few days ago (Jan 25?) and I managed to set it up in 8 minutes, which I think is a personal best. I also played a few Boshphorus cymbals last week and I can see why all of you jazz guys like them. Unfortunately for me I just don't think that they are versatile enough.

Piper: The hats are amazing, and I'm glad I found a pair that was heavier than the hats that have been advertised on cymbalsonly.com. I know I reaaaaally need to get some soundclips, because any description I give would not do them justice, but by tonight or tomorrow I should have clips of the group and of the individual Bos. pieces.

Joe: Actually, if you're looking for Bosphorus cymbals that fit a 'heavier' style... check out the Gold series. We have a store around where I live that sells Bosphorus cymbals, so I've tested out their Gold series 14" hats, and 16" fast crash. Definitely A Custom-ish in look and sound.

Well, with the obvious lack of toms, I'm forced to be more creative with grooves and fills, but honestly? I'm not a fan of gargantuan sets. My normal setup is a 4 pc. with five cymbals, so it's not too much bigger.

I'm also big on the whole "thousand ways to hit a drum" philosophy, so I'll make up accent patterns in my left hand on the snare using clicks, drags, ghost notes, rimshots, and regular snare hits. With the hats I'll play accents on the bell, or open it up for a nice slosh or a quick 'shup' in addition to generic sticking. The ride is a little harder to be creative with.. usually my options are on the bell, the bow, or the edge for a nice crash.

I also played a few Boshphorus cymbals last week and I can see why all of you jazz guys like them. Unfortunately for me I just don't think that they are versatile enough.

Well, I play rock, blues and funk and use solely Bosphorus Traditional series cymbals; 14" medium hats, 20" heavy ride and 16" med crash. I think they're great, similar to some old K Zildjians I've heard. I also play jazz about as well as Phil Rudd. Mine have good sticking, great wash, and sound good at pretty much any volume.

The Gold Series are like A Customs, but better in my opinion. They are Bosphorus' self-proclaimed 'rock' cymbals.

Wow, last thing I expected was a return to this thread. But hey, I'll roll with it.

fijjibo: Precisely. The traditionals are great for rock, funk, jazz, blues.. the list goes on. They are extremely versatile cymbals.. one of Bosphorus' best lines. You should definitely go for them.

Latin: Sorry for the extremely late response, but those sticks are Vater 7As. My favorite sticks by far.

40s jazz, you should go for the big bass, a snare, and a splash or two, maybe hi-hats...use that floor tom for a Gene Krupa fill thing.
