I like the Gretsch alot, and the wrap matches my guitar players matchless amp (SWEEEEEET amp by the way, an absolute tonemonster - I should post some clips sooner or later), but that 18" bass just wasn't cutting it in the kind of music we play, and I always worried about those single lug casings, and the LONG lugs that they leave exposed.

I was really just looking at sets for planning future savings, and ran across that yamaha on craigslist. The price (including bassdrum pedal, 1 boom cymbal stand and 1 boomcymbal/floor tom stand) was too good to not pull the trigger. I got a pretty sweet deal and they fit the band and my playing in it better (and yes the finish is called "Matte Sienna" it's just plain CLASSY in it's simplicity).

Unfortunately I'm probably gonna have to sell the Gretsch, but that's life. Pretty irresponsible for someone in my shoes to keep two drumsets when they could get a few hundred for one of 'em.
Might hold on to them anyway though.

Gotta love the Stage Custom Nouveaus...I just got the Matte Black Oak finish kit, with the stand alone 16" floor tom. You're right; the 22" kick has awesome projection (I see you have the EMAD batter and G2 clears as well!)...My old Tama Stagestar had an 18" that you could barely hear, especially at live gigs.

Yeah, but I'll bet it made the loading in and out nicer. What set was in your sound clips? Do you mike your kick when you play live? I've heard nothing but good things about those drums, especially the newer ones with the seperate lugs. The owner of a local drum shop told me he used one of those kits on tour and in the studio, and they were great, even the 18" kick.

The loading out WAS nice, I could fit the entire 4 piece set into the trunk of a volvo sedan. Which means I didn't have to load in when I got home at 3 in the morning (with drums sitting on the seats, you can't leave em out - not in this part of town anyway).

If you are referring to the clips on the myspace page that I linked in my intro, those clips feature an earlier drummer (and only one of the ripping guitarists we are currently rolling with). I'll throw up a clip or 2 with me on the Gretsch at the end of this post.

So far I've plaid out with this band 4 times, twice on borrowed sets. The two times you see in the pics above, on my own Gretsch were totally unmiked, but our most recent gig (my snare and cymbals, headliners starclassic bass and toms) all the drums were mic'ed.

Mic'ed with a single condenser about 6 feet above the ground, and about 6 feet back from the set.

The 2 tracks of guitars and the bass are both direct to board, guitarist started out playing with a click, but you might be able to hear he lost it, so I only used it to count off and then followed his playing already recorded.

Well, it doesn't sound bad, and you had only one mike, imagine if you had a kick mike right in front of the head. I went out and bought one of the newer ones today in white marine pearl at GC for $475. I'll post some pictures soon,and let you know how it sounds with my band. I hope it sounds good, because my girlfriend told me I'd better love it or she would kill me, she's a bit fed up with me buying and selling kits every few months. Oh, but it's so much fun. I can't stop myself, help.

Thanks, yeah it definitely sounds decent, and I may keep it (getting more tempted by the day, especially since our bass player who I had originally agreed to sell it to was just let go by the guitar players/band leaders). I think for playing the stuff we usually play, and for the venues we are playing right now, where we might often have no mic support, the Yamaha is a better choice, and I like having the 5 piece (although I tend to use it more as 3 different 4 pieces, cause those are the patterns that are part of my active vocabulary). Got to play a pretty sweet Starclassic (with my snare and cymbals) at the last gig we played, and the 22" bass drum definitely fit the music better (although the fact that it was miced was certainly part of the difference) as did the borrowed Stage Custom in the same sizes as my new one, that I used on our first gig.

Thanks for the welcome, as I've said this place seems to have an unusually civil, helpful and intelligent discourse for an internet music forum, which is great, especially for someone who is just getting back into an instrument I had sort of let go for a while (a fact which had been bothering me for a while before I hooked up with this band - just in time, right?)

Yes, it's a very nice place. I've been inspired to post quite a bit in a short time. Hopefully adding something worth reading. I am under the impression that people who genuinely respect the instrument and those who play it gravitate towards this forum. Let's face it, this entire site seems built upon feelings of respect and of love of drums, drummers and drumming.

It's great that you are back to drumming and have a band you can enjoy playing with.

So I switched up the setup a bit, both via changes to the setup of equipment I had, and some new stuff, as well as re-introducing a snare I already had. Switched from a 5 piece to 4 piece setup for two reasons: 1. I found myself playing really stereotypical fills down the toms on the 5 piece, 2. The drummer whose bass and toms I will be playing at our next gig (I'll play my own snare and cymbals) plays a 1 up 2 down 5 piece, which is why the extra floor tom is there, but I'm not really using it.

D.C., thanks man, I love both those rides, and they complement eachother brilliantly, amazing how well the thin Agop works in our loud funky blues-rock, especially if used judiciously in contrast to the K.

Mapex, I was born in St. Louis and lived there til age 6 (1978-84).
My dad picked the shirt up on a trip there sometime in the last couple years.

And I use the K Custom Medium Ride and K Custom Dark Crash as well; just that in 22" and 16" dimensions.
