I currently own a 14x3.5 Phosphor Bronze Black Panther and I am in the market for a new snare. I want it to be very different from my black panther and so am thinking a wood shell, 13 x (5.5 - 7") snare. Here are some of my options:
Tama Artwood Custom 13x6.5
DDrum Custom Maple 13x7
DW Collectors All-Maple 13x5 + 13x6 (Price is an issue on these models)
Any input on these snares or any other 13" models would be great! Thanks in advance.

custom!
Seriously it might be as cheap as looking at the likes of DW for a shell made from scratch to your own specs. Over here I can get a wooden shell made for pretty cheap, not much more than some of the big names, less in some cases, and I can spec everything as I want. I've just ordered a 13 x 8" aluminium snare, 7mm thick shell, black lugs, tension rods and hoops, dunnet strainer... basically I specced it all from scratch. It's going to be awesome. Ok so it cost quite a bit but that's cos of the thick shell, but I have plans for other drums. I want an inch thick shell made from Ironwood, I want a thick shelled bronze snare and I want a 12 x 6" snare, not sure what material yet though!!
If you want to stick to the big ones, perhaps look at a Yamaha Mushashi? They have a very good reputation. I want one of those too. Will it never end?!

Yep, I agree with Altered beast for the Yamaha Musashi Snare. That'd be my first choice, then a Black Panther snare would be second.

Good, because by next week, I should have a Musashi in my hands.

Thanks guys,
I've looked at the Yamaha Musashi 13x6.5 before and have actually tried it, oak just isn't the wood for me, far too harsh for my taste. Thanks anyway. Altered_beast the custom idea is one I have thought of before, so with your suggestion I went and did some pricing. From www.drummaker.com I can get a 10ply keller maple 13x5.5 with die-cast hoops, vintage tube lugs and Dunnett R-Class throw-off/butt for around £272 before shipping. This is about £140, which isn't bad at all. The labor is what I'm worried about, I have never built a drum before and I don't want to go and buy all the parts then botch the job. My father has experience in woodwork so I suppose i could ask him. Also as I live in the UK, I'm not sure if the shipping costs would be too expensive/complicated. Thanks for the advice.

i would say yamaha is the way to go as far as big names. definitely the mushashi or the steve jordan signature which i have. it was close but the steve jordan had a much more versatile tuning range so i got that. i've tuned it from the lowest fat tone to the highest pop i can get(which i like best) and with a few different heads on it from the stock which sounded pretty good to a few ambassadors and ps3s.

I recommend the Musashi too. I have on on my kit. You can hear some samples of it here www.handidrummed.com/drummers/profiles/rob/#media (http://www.handidrummed.com/drummers/profiles/rob/#media) or here www.handidrummed.com/rob_grooves.wmv (http://www.handidrummed.com/rob_grooves.wmv)

Yamaha Akira Jimbo - I played one in a drum shop over Christmas break and liked it a lot - 13 x 7 beech shell with wood hoops.

Have you ever looked at Brady drums? They are a custom drum company. Larry Mullen Jr. uses a 12x8 shyoak snare drum which I am considering buying because it sounds amazing. Always loved his snare sound.

I bought a 13x4 gretsch piccolo, bloody cheap at 200 australian, and it sounds fantastic, has just the right amount of ring and sounds great in reggae!

For whatever reason, I hadn't realised you were in the U.K. Definitely look into either Highwood drums or FVF Custom Drums, I'm sure they could do something for you. As price indications on his website, Francis from FVF shows a play shell ranging from about £250 to £350 I think it is. The lower figure is definitely right. Something to look into I reckon. The thing about FVF is they'll make you a drum to pretty much exactly what you want, and I'm pretty sure they're not just Keller shells, which makes it even better.
Or the Akira Jimbo, or a Mapex Black Panther.
Does it definitely have to be wood? Have you considered acrylic or any other material that isn't metal?

Pearl Joey Jordison Snare! Can't go wrong. I know it's metal, but it sounds great, and has a huge tuning range! Its can sound almost like an ac/dc like snare to a marching snare! I own it, its a bit exspensive, but it's worth it. I got it because i wanted and almost marching snare sound, and that's exactly what i wanted! You just truely can't go wrong. It can be a bit loud for my college dorm, but thats what you need for a live performance. If you're using it in studio, stick a moongel on it. I personally put a moongel on it for everything!
No lie, cheak it out!!!!

The only one of these I have any experience with is the DW Collectors (wood shell and the 5" depth) and it sounded great. You really need to listen to these drums before you buy them.

Then there's the Pearl Omar Hakim Signature snare. African Mahogany 13x5". Quite a sensitive little number. Reasonably affordable, and rather pretty.

That's a dam fine looking drum :-)
As beasty said, try highwood, I'm sure Gareth will be able to sort you out with whatever you require.
I used to have a 13x3 steel shelled snapper from pearl, by-eck did it make your eyes blink and your ears ring, awesome sound on it, I'm finding I prefer slightly deeper drums these days though :-)
Another option... how about a firecracker or popcorn snare from pearl, 12" and 10" in diameter in 5 or 6" depths I think, can't rightly remember of the top of my head, why limit it to 13" :-)

Thanks for all the help guys! I've looked into FVF and Highwood customs like you suggested. Highwood look to be cheaper and I'm quite temped by the 10mm shell thickness available.
That pearl model looks pretty nice indeed, if its sensitive, all the better! I like my ghost notes to be whisper quiet sometimes (within reason).
As for the Joey Jordison snare, its just not really what I'm looking for, steel shell ''Power Piccolo.'' I suppose looking into it wouldn't hurt. I want the warmth of wood you tend to lose when you stray into metal snares and honestly, I'm a jazz man. The finish puts me off a bit also.
The reason I'm sticking to a 13" diameter is that I intend to use this as a main snare, I find my BP just doesn't suit some situations and I want a change. Not that I'm ever going to stop using my BP... that would be stupid.
Thanks again!

Definitely try a DW Collector's 5X13 Maple (the 10+6 config). I've had one for a couple of years - Billy Ward hipped me to those snares, and it's one of the best that I've ever owned. It's just a well designed snare - loud, articulate with lots of tone. Something also about that 5X13 size...

Hey again, well cornelius all I can say is thank you! I tried out the DW collectors 10+6 configuration and loved it..... i did end up with a 14x5.5 though. I feel like I've wasted peoples time here, sorry if that is true. The 13" was nice but the 14"... woah. Its very different to my BP and I can see myself enjoying this snare quite a lot. So in the end I have: DW collectors series 14x5.5 maple 6ply with 10ply reenforcement hoops in champagne sparkle . Thanks again every one!
