I was wondering what you guys think of this kit as I just bought it, I have played it before and it is a million times better than my Pearl Export Series, also I got the Tama becasue I wanted a bop kit and a smaller bass drum as I am a small guy 5' 4", and it makes playing traditional hard on a kit that does not have enough angling capability. Any ways I saw the Gretsch Catalina Jazz Club Kit and I am thinking I should get that instead because of the quality factor and it probably sounds better. What do you guys think?

i think that the gretsch it probably better quality and better sound, but it also has a higher price. in this case you get what you pay for

I've owned both kits and, in my view, the Gretsch is far better in terms of overall quality. However, it's a 4 piece kit (standard jazz configuration and sizes), so if you want a 5 piece configuration there's nothing wrong with going with the Stagestar. Just swap out the heads and tune it up - should be fine.

I can recommend both...but in the end I personally would go for the Gretsch. The sound is phenomenal and overall very traditional. Round, warm...great.
Also the look is amazing, if I have money I will buy such a baby. Those are cool.

Tama is also a very good kit for the price and I like the Stagestar line because it is compact, tama`s shell quality is good. Sound is also cool for the price.

Thank you all for your reply's, I really want the Gretsch, I wish they made it in black. The only thing I am worried about is that If I put the Bass Drum riser on that my tom will not go low enough for me, but I think it will. I just got the Tama in the mail today and now I kinda wish I refused it so I can get the Gretsch, but I am probably gonna get the Gretsch anyway.

Thanks again.

You can always mount the rack tom on a separate snare stand (as many jazz drummers) or have it hang from a cymbal stand using a L-Rod clamp mount. These would give you more options and let you place the rack tom lower than if you used the tom mount on top of the bass drum.

Gretsch Catalina set!

I am not too fond of anything made by Tama right now. Hardware is cheaply made for what you are paying for!
