What's the difference between cutting your own hole out of a bass drum, and the Evans EMAD Resonant with the hole?

Ehh... The EMAD comes with some muffling rings? I'm pretty sure that's about it.

Yes, they come with two muffling rings one bigger, one smaller. The actual EMAD feature they say is the plastic ring that holds the rings in place. Awesome drum head I must say, but they do not make an "EMAD Ressonance Head". Do you mean what would be a good reso head or how bg to cut the hole for the reso?

I don't know exactly what you mean, but there is an EMAD resonant head.

Is it worth the money to buy one, or to just make a hole yourself?
well, it depends what you're looking for. if you want the adjustable dampening, go for the EMAD. on the other hand, if you're just looking for a hole for a mic, i would just cut the hole myself (or buy a different pre-ported head)

Evans dose make an EMAD reso head. I have one. It's a ported head with two different foam muffling rings that mount around the port. The edge of the port is also reinforced.
The foam rings have a small metal Evans logo on them. That'll stay put for about 15 seconds, then they fly off. The foam rings tends to get sucked into the drum from time to time. I can't tell much difference if the foam ring is on the head or not.
Other than the muffling ring issues the head sounds fine. I don't thing it offers anything special that other ported heads don't offer.
