I just got back from Alto Music in Middletown, NY and on a whim I picked up a pair of Johnny Rabb RhythmSaws.
WOW. Although they looked kinda corny at first, these things are really awesome. Not only do they function as a good pair of sticks (5As) but the guiro section allows for some *VERY* interesting patterns. Since I'm not around my kit until next week I won't be able to test these out on cymbals, but I'm sure they'll amaze me even more.
Anyone else own a pair? Share some experiences!

These sticks have always intrigued me as I like anything out-of-the-ordinary. I won a set in a wager with larlev and they should be arriving any day now.
What do you play the ridges on? The rims? I'd think you'd get a "reverse" guiro effect. In a normal guiro, the sound chamber is ribbed but in this case the sound chamber is smooth and the rubbing stick is ribbed.

Obviously, the 'saws are the bottom 2 pairs.
Since all I have at my immediate disposal is my pad, I've been using them with my pad. Dragging the guiro end on the rims gives a more open "grating" sound, however stick on stick allows for a traditional, great sounding guiro "zzzzzhik!" They're nice for adding additional percussive patterns. With only a pad and these sticks, I've come up with some cool latin samba and mambo rhythms. I know you guys may not initially be impressed.. but this is one of those toys that you really need to get a hands-on experience with.

I tried to order a pair of these two years ago and I couldn't find them anywhere. I just figured that they were no longer available. Guess I better get back to it. For you guys who have purchased them recently, can you point me in the right direction (without me having to drive to Middletown, NY)?

Thanks for the eBay link, larlev. The prices are steep, but maybe in a couple of weeks I'll check back and see if they have any left. I just spent a bunch of money in preparation for going to NAMM in two days. If I had known about those maybe a month ago I could have brought them with me to the show and had Johnny himself sign them. Ah well, next time.
