I've read some of the short reviews on musicians friend and they havent helped much. Is the sweet ride as good as most have made it sound. I'm thinking of getting one and I'd like to know if it is a good ride and as a crash.

yes. excellent crash, and beautiful ride. nice wash without losing its stick definition.
good all around, versatile, medium weight ride. usually guitar centers carry them, try your local gc and try it yourself.

Great Ride Cymbal! You should check one out in person! They seem to be versatile!

Great cymbal indeed and I'm still considering buying it. It's better in the traditional finish for my liking.

The sweet ride is a decent cymbal. Its a better crash then a ride though. And has a weak bell
If your looking for a very washy ride then go for it

Avedis Medium is the most versatile one in the series. Prefect stick definition with a good wash. Right in that middle between the sweet and the ping.

Yeah, I have never gotten into the "Brilliant" finish. it seems to mute the cymbal sound to me.

Not all that thrilled with my Zildjian 21" Sweet Ride, too washy for my taste, not liking the Bell either. although since replacing my kit recently I am having trouble positioning it to get the bell.
Looking at a K Ride?
Time to start trying them out again.

Yes it is a very good, top of the line, all purpose cymbal. A lot of top drummers like Louie Bellson, my idol, uses that ride. Like some have already said, the best thing to do is go to a music store and try one for yourself. Make sure you take your sticks.

Well, IMO, it has a great bell, but I think the stick definition is horrible. Everytime I play, I'll do a change and start playing on it and I think..hm..It's just not bright enough for me, it doesn't produce a good ping, it feels and sounds dead when I start playing it. It does have an amazing sounding crash to it though, like most sweet rides. Sweet rides are used for mainly jazz and funk, so if you're playing harder type music, I wouldn't recommend it as a good ride. Meinl also makes a really nice sounding Sweet ride in their 'Jazz' line, but of course it's very unlikely you'll find one around, unless you order it. They have a sound sample of it on their site..Im done ranting.

Art Blakey and Taylor Hawkins uses the ride too.

I don't think that Art Blakey uses much of anything since he is no longer living. However, these are great ride cymbals!

I remember someone saying in a thread last year about how some of the late, great drummers didn't play the cymbals that the zildjian site says they did. It might have been Art, I can't remember, but they said he played the Sweet ride, even though it wasn't released until AFTER his death. Zildjian replied in an email querying the situation saying that "if he were still alive, he would surely love this cymbal" or something along the lines of that.
Lesson: don't trust Zildjian..... or just they're artist pages anyway.

I definitely recommend the sweet ride as a versatile ride for light playing, washy buildup and big crashes. I only use it and an 18" K Dark crash, so it does a lot work for me. I don't think Zildjian is making the 'sweet A's' anymore. I have the 15" hats as well and they are just as great. The sound clips on the Zildjian site did a good job of representing them i thought.

Well if that's the case then what the f***!! That's some of the stupidest crap I've ever heard to say that "so n so would love this cymbal". Kinda lost a bit of respect for Zildjian now.

Mio a BUCKO?
When did Art Blakey pass away? 1990? And the Sweet ride was inroduced in 1999? It kinda hard to endorse anything when you are dead! Oh, wait a minute Armand must have found him in the after life and said, "Hey Art.....try one of my Sweet Rides. I'll give you a retroactive endorsement!"
Sorry....tired of Zildjian's marketing BS when it only costs about $15 to make one of their now crappy cymbals. But who can blame their panic with companies like Dream coming out of China and positioning themselves to tear Craggie apart!

Yea there's some other artists that apparently used a certain cymbal, even though it was introduced AFTER they died. Either way, it's a good sounding, versatile cymbal.
And I was kidding about the Bucko part.

I just ordered one. I took the long 2 hour trip to a music store today, and found a few. I then went to 2112 Percussion (GREAT place...always very helpful) and ordered one as they have better sale prices than GC. I have a 20" Medium Ride now and while being a nice rock ride, I needed something a bit jazzier. The Sweet Ride is a true multipurpose ride, get one of these and you should be happy.

I'm sure the 21" Sweet Ride is a fine cymbal, but I'm one who is also getting VERY tired VERY fast of Zildjian's constant marketing attempts. Their attempts probably drive away more customers than they actually gain. It's time to get back to basics for them I feel and focus on what they've lost, making individual, unique cymbals with enough character to see off the ever-increasing ubiquity of companies such as Bosphorous and Istanbul. Pity they won't, for them at least. I'm happy with the competition.

I know but I thought you were Richie Cunningham for a while......I do like this cymbal though! I would like to see all of the manufacturers focus less on maximizing their profits by cheapening their products (are you listening Vic Firth?) and return to a commitment of the highest quality. Word of mouth or word of internet ids the best form of advertising anyone can get!

Good Ride cymbal, good crash.
But personally I don`t like its sound too much...I prefer the Avedis Medium Ride 20".

Yeah the crash is very nice indeed. I bought a Saluda ride cymbal, but would still like to pick this one up too. I think Zildjian has made fine quality cymbals, but I only have experience with newer zildjians, I don't know how they were before hand.

Well my 21" sweet ride came in today... FANTASTIC cymbal. It is much more mellow sounding than I thought, which is nice. My other 20" Medium ride is a bit harsh at times and this cymbal really fills in that spot. I put my little sizzle chain on it too and so now it sizzles... Anyway, great suspended roll sound too out of this. Deep crashes are possible too. I will use this cymbal for sure on quiet gigs. A variety of sticks work well on it too. Nylon sticks give it a sound like a K Custom medium ride while wood sticks keep it nice and well...sweet. The bell is big but like the rest of the cymbal low and mellow sounding. Certainly a great buy, go and get one before they go up in price!

Yes,
I have played on many of these rides and they do sound great and seem to be very consistent from drum shop to drum shop!

Okay, I wasn't liking my Zildjian 21" sweet ride as previously posted, was at the Drum Pad yesterday and decided to try something, I bought 6 Zildjian rivets and Installed them last night, now this Cymbal sounds Beautiful. It's a keeper, was really easy to do, still looking at adding another ride but will keep this one now.
