What ride does Sabian make that would be good for a Jazz setting. As using a pun alot of sound of Jazz "rides on the ride" ;). Ie the use of the ride is is important to the Jazz sound.

HHX legacy ride, Duo ride, raw bell, HH jazz ride, Manhattan jazz. Those are a few but pretty much all of the HH line are great for jazz.

What makes that "Jazz" sound in a ride? Also which one of those cymbals has the most tone?

I've always liked the DeJohnette Signature series.

To answer SuperStever's question, jazz cymbals are typically darker and more earthy and sizzly than rock cymbals. It's a lot about personal preference, some like really washy cymbals with lots of overtones, some like a dry sound.

The dejohnette signature series are awesome! I really like the Manhatten Jazz though, probably my favorite Sabian cymbal.

I know what "dark" means, what "sizzle" means? But what does "earthy" mean?

I love the Manhattan Jazz Ride, even though its a "jazz" ride it wouldnt sound out of place in many musical settings. All I need now is 700 AUD...

Well, my drum teacher always says: "You are not more stupid than the others who know it." Those words are just from the typical drummer vocabulary.

Earthy actually means that a cymbal is more natural, has a very natural sound and often also the natural "earthy" look. I think the opposite would be pretty much "brilliant"...?

Oh, btw, I love the 21" Legacy ride, I find that the Manhattan Ride is overpowering too much, the Legacy Ride is more controlled. I love the sound, just cool...

The Dejohnette is a great cymbal but if you want another style out of itl, you won't find it.

Actually the SABIAN AA Raw rides are very popular as well. cymbalsonly.com carries a few very "earthy" jazz rides. Earthy sound essentially means the dirtiness to the cymbal. This comes in the form of a more oriental "turkish" or "chinese" sound. Something exotic like, not Western style. (think as far different from Paiste 2002 as you can get)

Thanks so much for mentioning them, just forgot about those. they are still on my favourite list for the next cymbal: Not lathed, earthy, no defined bell sound, dark. Cool clean wash which "roars" nicely.

and other i wanna mention are Flat rides. Always a good candidate for jazz music, try em out!

I like the 20" HH Duo Ride for Jazz. Never played one personally but I've heard it in a few settings and I think it's incredible.

All those are lovely but I bought a 20" HH Classic Ride from ebay thinking it would be similar and I have to say its not very jazzy to my ears.

Anyone heard the HH Vintage Ride? That thing is KILLER! I'm in love with it now, and you can use it in ANY musical setting whether it be Jazz, Rock, Funk...beautiful.

Does it have to be Sabian....if not check out www.cymbalfusion.com, and the Masterwork Jazz Series cymbals. There is a sound byte for every cymbal, and they will save you some money also. Good luck in your hunt. I just bought a 22 inch ride and a pair of 13 inch hats.
