View Full Version : want to buy SALUDA cymbals...

is it a good idea to buy Saluda cymbals? compared to Zildjian, Paiste or even Agop, they are very cheap. I've heard they are good. is it right?
AND... which of them will you advice me? I'm playing alternative/post rock, but I want cymbals sounding somewhere between jazz and rock cymbals. I know it isn't rather accurate description :p I'm looking for: one hi-hat, one ride <something jazzy, but not dry>, two crashes <should be quite explosive - listen to the sound of cymbals of Panda Bear of Animal Collective - they sound SOOO good and he is such an IMPRESSIVE drummer...>, china <about 16 or 18 inches - just for crashing> and one or two splashes.
I will be glad for any advices ;)
btw. sorry for my English.

If you look at how popular Saludas are on this forum, they should be good. I have never played one myself, but I would love to try one soon, they seem great. They would defidently (spelling) sound great when looking at the good reviews they get round here!

I am also considering trading in for some Saludas.
It seems as though most people that are doing that are going from an entry level cymbal set (B8, ZXT, PST5) to the Saludas.
Has anyone ever switched from other levels (for example A Zildjian, AA's or 2002's)? I am curious to how they feel on the sound quality compared to those levels.

The saludas seem to have great reports.. but i am happy with the big three.. why not try them out though.

I traded the following
A custom 8 splash
A medium 16 crash
A Custom 17 crash
A Custom 18 Projection crash
20 K Custom Ride
13 K/Z hi hats
18 Latin Percussion Ran Can Chinese
FOR:
8 Mist-X Splash
17 Mist-X Medium thin crash
18 Mist-X Full crash
18 Mist-X rock crash
21 Mist-X Heavy dry raw bell ride w/ an earthworks finish
14 Mist/Mist-X wavy bottom hats
19 Voodoo pure chinese
Honestly.....there is no comparison. And let me tell you....I WAS A BIG Zildjian guy! Saludas are more musical, and much more bright and cutting. THe other day I was at guitar center picking up some sticks and such, and I sat down at a kit w/ A Customs,...they sounded like they were "muted" or had tape on them, no kidding! The best way to describe it is this,....others seem/feel one dimensional,....lacking overall tone.
You'll just have to play one first!
Email or call Jamie and tell him what you have to trade or what you want,...YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPOINTED!!

Thanks...
I am going to email him about one cymbal (15" Paper Thin Crash) and then will make a decision on the others.
i got some GREAT hats from them and now im just trying to find out what i want now. Just know what you want! if you get something and dont like it you can always send it back and jamie with hook you up with something better. You cant go wrong with them just think about what you want. If you are not good at describing just go and try some highend lines and tell him what highend cymbals you liked and he will help you pick out the saluda that best fits it.

It just depends on what sounds you like really. I seem to be trading in Sabians for Saludas. I'm not trading my Zildjians. Each company has a different sound.

Everyone has different tastes and needs when it comes to cymbals. When it comes to quality, customer service, and value Saluda stands above the big three. I absolutely love my Saludas. Over the years I have played all the major brands (not every cymbal in every line, but many) and I think I would pick a Saluda over the other brands 9 times out of 10.
Try one. If you don't like it I'm sure they will take it back or better yet exchange or re-tune it to meet your needs.

They seem great and all. Any one from the UK delt with them here yet? Expensive shipping or difficulties?

I'm about ready to get a "china splash" as well, but maybe a Hybrid X china splash with venting holes!! :)
18" Mist-X Thin crash ride ....are you playing jazzy situations?? That sounds like it'll be nice!
Make sure you report back!

I do play a little bit of Jazz...a couple of teachers and I have a Jazz trio that plays a couple of times a year.
The main reason I wanted that cymbal was to have a second ride that is a little more washy that had some crash qualities that complimented my other crash cymbals (16" A Thin Crash, 17" A Medium Thin Crash). Jamie seemed to think that cymbal would work well.
The china splash was just something that I have always wanted to incorporate into my drum set. I have heard the B8Pro China Splash and thought they were fun.

It seems like the only unproven element of saluda is their durability, which is one of my highest concerns. They simply have not been out long enough to be tested over years of heavy playing. It concerns me that they offer only a one year warranty on all their lines. This is why I went w/ sabian HHX crashes cuz of the 2yr warranty.
Are there any heavy players out there who have abused, uh, i mean played, saludas? Im gonna try out a 24" voodoo first. But what i really want to get is a large (22") crash ride. Im looking for a heavy, responsive, loud (but not overpowering) cymbal w/ a dark, shimmering sustain that can withstand the heaviest of playing. Ive looked into the diamond and hybrid metal series, but if someone can point me in the right direction i would be grateful.

Go to their website and read through what their endorsers have to say about their durability. Hand hammered and crafted cymbals have proven durability....Saludas have been out longer than you think and they have quite a few "harder rock" style endorsers, check it out, ....OR,....call or email Jamie! He'll tell you........

Why not just get ahold of Jamie and ask him/tell him what you're looking for in that 22" crash/ride ? The Diamond is NOT what you're looking for.....teh Hybrid Metal might be though. I'd also say to look at a Mist-X mellow, or dark "power" or "rock" crash ride. But ask Jamie ...he'll hook you up! You're quickest way is to call him. 803-776-6898
Im all for Saludas and im getting my order in as soon as i have the money, but do you really think the best place to get info about a product is to ask the guy whos selling it to you?

He's making the cymbals.......it makes sense to me!
Where are you going to go for info about ANYTHING? Somewhere else? That's just opinion. If you have questions about a product, you ask the company! OR......am I missing something here

If he was trying to sell you what he had "in stock" and not making it to order, I'd say it's not the best place to ask for info. However, Saluda (Jamie) is making you a cymbal to order, he needs your input and you need his to get it right. He will also take the cymbal back, exchange it or re-tool it if you don't like it. His companies reputation is on the line and he stands by his products. As a happy customer, I have no reservations recommending Saluda.

You need to look into the all new GLORY series for that big crash ride. I'm getting one soon, and they are amazing.

let us know when you get that 22" glory! Im curious about this series, as the description for it does not help me much. How is that hybrid metal 16incher treatin ya?
And btw, since your in SC have you ever gone to the Saluda factory to test cymbals? I have never had the luxury to try cymbals out of a vault and Saluda is my best bet to achieve that goal. Maybe someday, but till then Im done with ordering cymbals blind...
