Im having trouble with heads here. What are the pros and cons towards both of these heads? Im running ebony ambassadours as a reso head, on a tama swingstar kit, with 12", 13", and 16" toms. Im looking for a good punch from the toms. Im running studio x's right now, but they are too high ringy for me. Im leaning towards aquarian, because i love their customer service and prodcuts, but will the coated EC2s give me a better sound?

You sure you want to have a head with muffling alreaddy in? You should be looking at heads with out them. And if you want to muffle them use moongel or drumgum

And as far as durability you should want two ply

Try the Performance 2's. I use them. They will give that low rock sound and they are very, very tough since they are meant for loose tuning.

I recently replaced all the tom heads on my kit with coated EC2s, and I have to say I don't really like them much. They are not bad, mind you, just bland. When mic'd they don't have a lot of attack or definition, but they do have quite a bit of sustain. I was looking for a sound similar to coated Ambassadors, only with a bit less sustain. The coated EC2s aren't the answer for me. I put the Remos back on and I'm happier.

I hope this bit of info helps - sorry I can't comment on the other heads.

Well two ply heads with muffling do tend to be dead

They are not dead at all. They are bland. It's different.

I could picture the coated EC2s being nice on a different set. My set is an older Mapex with basswood shells, and the EC2s just aren't what I was after. Like I said, they aren't bad. Perhaps on a maple or birch kit they would get closer to what I would like.

i wouldnt say EC2'S are that dead.. my brother has Remo emperor's on his kit and we both agree the EC2's sound better. so muffle ring or no. its down to the sound you like..
