Right now I'm trying to play with no ride since I really don't use one often. I've seen Kurt Weil (sp?) from the New Pornographers and Brian from Yeah Yeah Yeahs use only 1 18" crash effectively (I play with 2 18" crashes). The style of music I play doesn't necessarily require a ride in most songs (thus far), it's instrumental, somewhat experimental. Also I'll admit, I'm lazy when it comes to hauling my gear to/from gigs and also don't want to spend the money on another cymbal right now! I've been debating getting a crash/ride, but would like to see if I can hold off for a bit.
So I'm just curious how many of you non-traditional players have played or still do play with only crashes and no rides? How happy were/are you with it?

Well... it's up to you to choose which cymbals to use on your playing. It doesn't depend on the music style you're playing... For example, I haven't seen Mike Mangini using a ride cymbal on his drumset and he can play any kind of style...
It's up to you bro ;)
I use the ride cymbal

I thought that Terry Bozzio once said he gave up playing the ride cymbal because Tony Williams played it better than anyone could. Can anyone verify if that statement is true?

Can't tell if that's true...but why would anyone give up playing the ride cymbal just because Master Tony Williams played it better than anyone?

Oh...and about Mangini not using the ride cymbal, I may have been mistaken... because I just went to Nuno's website and checkout the info about Manginiand the the setup had one earth ride... but it said "'99". So I can't tell if he still uses the ride...

When I bought my first kit, I only had hats and one crash. You make do with what ya got. :)

I play 2 crashes, hats, and a splash.
One crash is this one-

I use the 18inch version to ride on, and then when I need a loud crash, I just use both crashes at once. I love my setup.

You shouldn't feel as if a cymbal serves for one specific purpose. You can make any cymbal sound the way you want it to.

i have a recent bootleg of a clinic he did and he used a ride. Also when he played with extreme and nuno's solo stuff he used a ride.
p.s. nuno's my fav riff-meister

I believe that if you dont want to use a ride, then thats ok. If its the way you want to play then play that way ; ) . I use 2 rides so I can have many different sounds and be able to open up my creativity just a little more.

Yeah, if it's unnecessary for you, then I'd say don't buy one just for the sake of having one.
Keith Moon, the opposite of what you all are saying, used only crashes and rides towards the latter half of his career, not even bringing a high hat to gigs.

I went to practice last night and forgot my cymbal case. It's about 45 min. round trip to get them. So, I played for 2 hours with no cymbals. Had a great practice! You said "experimental" music. Use what ever cymbal set up sounds best for the music you play, that's the essence of style.

Well I'm not going to play the drums now, because Thomas Lang can play them better than me.
I doubt Terry said this...
Speaking of Thomas Lang and rides, he RARELY uses a ride. Its all dependent on the music you are playing and what it calls for.

Lars Ulrich only uses the ride VERY rarely on all of his work with Metallica.
