Hey guys,
Well, basically ive ordered a new kit in specific sizes to arrive very soon.. and im wanting to buy a nice new snare to accompany it. After a good while of research, ive decided 14" is too big for me (have used it for 8 years), and that 12" is too small - so im hoping to get a 13" snare.

Ive narrowed things down to the following two snares, please take a look and someone offer me advice! perhaps some of you use these snares?

1) 13 x 5.5 : Black Panther Snare
http://www.drumwright.co.uk/pages/product_detail.asp?F_ProductID=3877

2) 13 x 5 : Yamaha Maple custom absolute
http://www.andertons.co.uk/acatalog/info_ASD1350YK.html

id appreciate any info or advice you could offer!

Cheers,
Ric vdb

well i have a 12" x 7" black panther- dont disregard this as being small. it really packs a punch and a great snare for the price. not sure about the other two though. good luck!

Hey groove, Those are two great snares you have a choice of! I've played the Yamaha you refer to and currently own a Black Panther phosphor bronze 14x3.5", that thing sounds HUGE! I'd say go for the Black Panther, I'm a big Yamaha fan but when it comes to snares; Mapex have done a fine job of making some fantastic products for the price of them. If you get a chance try and play both before you buy, as this is only my opinion and it's yours that counts. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info - just to let you know, i dont disregard 12" snares as being too small, i was actually quite close to getting one - but after playing a few and testing them, i decided the size wasnt right for me! Great for secondary though!

Hey Rossy, thanks for your help! The black panther snares look quite classy and funky i must say, i may well go for the black panther as it looks great and is cheaper. Unfortunately, i was going to buy the snare online, so i cant test it! anywhere i could find sound clips featuring the snare??

i have a yamaha steve jordan snare that 13x6.5 and its insane. i can get any sound out of it...loud crack, crazy pop or even a nice low end thud. i've played black panthers but not that size. if its as good as the others i've played you have one tough choice my friend

Of course Yamaha snares are awesome...but those Black panther snare drums...oh mate! :-)
Today I recorded on one and looked at it, shell, lugs, design...and also fell in love with their sound...absolutly beautiful.
I don`t praise them into sky but seriously: Those are great, I`m personally impressed of them...quality is great!

your description of the snare is most certainly winning me over! was it the 13 x 5.5 version??

even down to the little details such as the snare strainer, which is the best one on any snare ive seen, the finish is great, a beautiful looking drum with a great sound.

No, it was a 14x5.5
anyway, you should go to a music store and test it...at least a similar model.
Was just my experience today with that baby...

im in exactly the same boat man...

except im searching for 10" snares....and now upon reading this an kind of copping myself on...im wondering is 10" way too small??i mean i do want a gunshot crack in a snare granted(i currently have my 14" Sonor force 3005 tuned up as tight as i can possibly get it without the whole snare exploding and killing me!!!)!but still im not so sure now if a 10" is a good plan...?

hey man - i know its personal preference, but id definately say for your main snare 10" would be way too small, but for auxillary would be great! 12" might be better for you?

would you say???hmmmmm yeah you probably have a good point....hmmm.....i really wish i could have a play of some sort of 10"...because i love small toms...ive got nice jazz kit sizes...but yeah maybe your all right....hmmmm better get a lot more opinions on this!!!

has anyone here ever used a 10" snare as a primary snare???

or would a 12" be my answer???

size wise, and i mean in terms of being able to accurately hitting the drum, it may be difficult with a 10". Heres an idea, mount your 10" tom to ur snare stand and just try playing and grooving.. it will obviously not sound good, but will give u an idea of the size and how it wud feel to play!

If you dig small sizes, wait till you hear wats on its way to me, custom order ;) :

Yamaha stage custom Nouveau:
8" tom
10" tom
14" floor tom
20" bass drum

Well, exept it is a personal thing I think it also matters what music style do you mainly play. A 10" would be much too calm for many music styles, wouldn`t just be present enough. You know, not enough power etc.

A 12" could work...do you like wood or rather metal?
Maybe look for a 12" which has a very good shell quality and if you are a wood fan, look for some Bubinga snare drums or oak. Loud woods with projection...

also a snare drum I can recommend is the Sonor Tal Bergman Sig. Snare drum. It is 27-ply beech wood, so this thing is punchy and powerful, also high-pitched....though it is 13" diameter.
Or another I`ve heard of is the Sonor Samantha Maloney sig snare drum...that would be 12" diameter, 12-ply birch shell.

I hope I could help a bit.......

PS: and oh yeah, check out Black Panther Snare drums, those are also awesome!

8" tom????woooohoooo!!man thats sounds sweet....!

nice!

ive got a sonor force 2005,10",12",14" toms,and a 22" bass...i like a nice punchy bass tho...

well i doubt id have a problem on a 10" snare playability wise...i mean i stick to the center or my snare,i do rimshots, and rolls are all pretty centrel...but yeah i will try do that....

im just wondering how a 10" would sound really??i was in my local place today...(pretty expensive, and pretty crap..!)...an was looking at the only smaller snare they had...a 10"...ah im not good with remembering names...it was a 10" signature snare anyway...i asked could i have a pop at it,try it out for size.....he was taking it down...looked at teh price tag an placed it right back up...€800...what a f***ing joke!!!theyre a total rip off...tryin to sell me a DW 4000 double pedal for €250 too...

i agree with drummer karl - like the 10" would quite simply be drowned out by the rest of the drums/musicians in your band (if youre in one!), 12" would really be a great size for you. I once tested a 12" x like 6" Yamaha maple custom snare... it was seriously the nicest sounding snare ive ever played. Id get it myself, but as i said, im not too keen on the size, id find 13" to be better for me!

Karl man,
i think i play a lot of similar stuff to you...as in ive been on Jazz and Funk for the last while...i also play a lot of weird prog, and ive lately been stepping into the unknown and oddly odd territories of jungle and DnB etc....

ive liked wood so far..my snare at the moment is maple...the only other metal snare ive played was a crappy 3rd hand PP one...which fell apart in a matter of weeks...so i had bad experience with that..!!so i would go for either....!but wood maybe nice...

i dunno about a 13" snare!!might just have a hard time gettin any kind of skins for that here!!haha!

sonor are a big favourite in my books...?so ill have a look at some of those names!

oak would also be very nice...but does it not get priceier as we step into oak territory??hmmmm?
have any of you ever heard of DW pacific 805s???seemingly there are a lot of them on sale on the USA ebay...?(theyre 10"...still not totally unconvinced on the 10"s!!)

well a 12" sounds like the plan if thats my biggest worry really...

my band played warrenpoint a few years ago, its cool there!! dood, you should save your money like and get a good snare - better than buying a mediocre snare and realising a few months later that you have snare you dont really like, and the extra cash you couldve used for a great snare! wat black panthers ya lookin at :P ?

the hammered bronze: http://www.blackpanthersnares.com/hammered_bronze.asp

and the premium brass:http://www.blackpanthersnares.com/metal_brass.asp

these are basically excluding all the prices etc at the moment...these are basically my preferences in a BP snare...and yeah ill admit your right about the price thing..but if i can get one thats less than say €300 im alright....

is warrenpoint any good??yeah were playin "The Duke"...hopefully shud be fun.!!

Woah....that's a very tough decision between the BP and the Yamaha. I recently tried the Maple Custom snare and I wasn't impressed with it but it had the stock head on and the tuning wasn't right. I have heard the Black panther before and was blown away! That snare is damn beautiful! Either way you go, you're going to get a good snare, but I am going to say go for the... oh man....go for the Yamaha cause I know with proper heads and proper tuning, it could quite possibly be the greatest snare ever.

By the way, where abouts in Ireland ye from Da Cheese Walks?

Dublin and Vancouver are strikingly similar. When I was over there, it felt just like home in many ways, but that's because I'm surrounded by Irish folk over here all the time (My family is Irish). Hopefully I'll be moving to the Four Courts area cause I want to stay in the city centre area, no matter how expensive it'll be.

And about your snare question. I've never used Midwest percussion or any online music stores, but I notice you're looking to buy a 10" snare as your main snare? Woah haha that's very small, but I saw the sizes that your kit is and it could work. Good choice with the Yamaha Stage Custom though. I don't know much about small snares and the only one I've ever seen is the Pearl Firecracker and I though it was pretty bad, but I'd say go for something a bit larger eh, either a 12" or 13". The Yamaha Musashi is a very nice snare. Good crack, very versatile. There's also the Steve Jordan and the Omar Hakim snares that I'd recommend, but I don't know what the availability is in Ireland. I know one music shop I went to on the Eden Quay I think it was had some snares, but they weren't that great.

nah any music shop over here is pretty dire for anything out of the ordinary...availability is null...so when anyone recommends anything its safe to presume ill be net-ordering!

i know the 10" might seem like itll be a bit too small...but i mean i am really for looking for a crack...my kits tuned to that good stage where a small snare would fit in perfectly with the stuff im playing...if it comes to it,an i finally reach a satori and realize 10" is just too small, itll be a 12"...

i was looking at teh Mushashi....lovely snare, but its proved difficult to find for sale...and also with teh P&P etc i doubt i could afford one...?i was looking at the pearl firecracker,an to be honest it doesnt look like it would withstand much!!theres a yamaha stage custom floating around EBay somewhere,,,they good snares??cos its a really good price...

Ah around the four courts can get pretty rough...just mind yourself when you get down there...but it is a great place to live(alon gthe quays that is)...so close to the city and rent will be about €400-€450 a month...maybe cheaper...if cost isnt a worry you could seriously go right into the city...i mean a temple bar flat is about €490 a month....really steep for most...but if you want a central location(pretty nice spot too...)then it works a charm!!haha!

You can definitely get a good crack out of the Yamaha snare. I have one and it's not bad, but I won't be keeping it. Yea the Pearl won't be able to stand up. I don't know man, it's a tough decision, but I saw on the midwest percussion website that they sell 10" stage custom snares. I imagine midwest percussion is trustworthy and that the snare would do just fine for the kit you have and it would compliment eachother very nicely. It's fairly cheap too. Yamaha Stage Custom 10" snare (http://www.midwestpercussion.com/drums/snares/yamaha/index.html)

And yea I was thinking of moving to the temple bar area too. Very nice there and the night life is unbelievable. I saw a Subway guy dressed in a sandwich outfit get punched in the back of the head by two younger guys, it was pretty funny. Gotta love Ireland!

I own the BP 14" by 5.5" steel snare and I love it. When I was buying it I tried the maple one in question, and was impressed with its sound, however I prefered the steel more for my primary snare. I love BP so much I concidering that maple, 10" by 6.5" (I think thats the size, defoe 10" anyway) as an aux. Hope that helps.

so people: is the 10" Walnut Black Panther snare worth it???basically..in euro off a site which seems pretty good, the costs(i calculated UPS shipping costs myself)should be about €290.

is this steep for:9472

or should i go for the 10" steel Black Panther, cheaper, about €120 minus p&P from ebay:
9474

or should i go for a cheaper one,a DW 10" chrome(or "popcorn"?)snare,at about €150 here in Ireland:
9473

thanks,
