View Full Version : New Paiste hats any good?
I just got back into drumming after 6 years. I bought a 5 piece Rockwood by Hohner set for $80. The heads and cymbals are junk, but the shells & hoops look like new.
Anyway, I found some new Paiste hi hats for $20 out the door.
I haven't been able to find much information on them, but I like the way they sound.
Here's what I picked up:

I have a feeling they're not top of the line, but they're a heck of alot better than what came with the set!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but those are not Paiste. They're 'Percussion Plus' and brass. Not synonymous with good quality I'm afraid, but at $20, there could be worse buys.

It says they're made by Paiste. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b194/Tekgino/Jokes/confused.gif

They feel alot heavier than the old hats do, but not as heavy as my Dad's Zildjians.

Yeah, see that's where the confusion sets in. They're ACTUALLY Percussion Plus and they're made by Paiste in their lower-end German manufacturing plant as cheap, generic cymbals. Then a brand name is stamped on them and shipped out. So really, they're not made by Paiste, they're a sub-brand of generic cymbals with a stamp on them. As long as they don't bend like your old ones though, I suppose they're something to hit. Remember, that companies like Percussion Plus don't have their own cymbal manufacturing plants, they could just as easily be made by Sabian, Zildjian, Meinl, anybody, but that doesn't make them any better particularly. Production of them is a financial decision, as Paiste will be paid to manufacture them by Percussion Plus.

Listen. You get what you paid for. Those cymbals may sound alright to you, or they may sound like crap. Either way, after you play them for a while, go to the guitar center or find a place where you can find high quality cymbals and you will realize that you will probably want to save up some money and get a nice cymbals.

That's a rather condescending tone, Paul. Ironic really, considering your lack of application to the first word of your post.

I got ya, thanks for clearing that up. I have another set of hats made by CB, and these sound so much better. I also threw my Dads Zildjian's on there and still prefer these. (The Zildjians are just too heavy) I do plan on buying something better, but for now these will do. Thanks!

Well the CB ones are pretty much similar to the PP ones you've got, most likely both brass and of similar quality. However, those old Zildjians might be rather sweet...
How old exactly?

I'm not sure how old they are. I'm thinking not very old since they are ink stamped.
The old Sonor set we used to have had all all Zildjian Cymbals. (Sizzler, Ride, and Hats)
They only had the stamp in the cymbal with no ink. I wish I would have never sold that kit! http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b194/Tekgino/Jokes/banghead.gif
Anyways, these came with the drum set he just bought.

Those are Scimitars, which were Zildjian's entry level model during most of the nineties and maybe the end of the eighties, although I'm not sure of the exact dates of the Scimitar line. They were replaced with the ZBT line.
EDIT: I mean Percussion Plus.

Are they better then the Planet Z's? They sure feel heavy!
I plan on hitting a local drum shop here in Raleigh call 2112. http://www.2112online.com/deptdrum.shtml
All they sell is percussion equipment.

They're better than Planet Z's, yes. Planet Z's are around the same sort of level as your Pulse ones, although I won't pretend that those Scimitars are high end at all.

Yeah, I undestand. Thanks man...
