single ply head not for rock... agree?

Would you agree that singly ply heads wouldn't work for rock?

I'm having this love for single ply heads lately (switch from G2 to stock heads). Sure they sound high pitched (sizes are 10,12,14) but they sound fuller

Sorry but I dont agree - single ply can be used in any situation from rock to jazz up to metal and then to reggae...

They can be great for rock. Only problem i have found, as a heavy hitter, is that they have to be replaced alot sooner. If money is never an issue, use single ply. I would use coated ambassadors all the time instead of coated emperors if I always had extra money.

Then it's time to switch to Aquarian satin finish texture coated... Single ply good for hard hitter ;-)

Im using single play Aquarian Satin finish skins all-round and prefer them for metal over any 2-ply head Ive tried. They have a wider tunable range, they respond well and have a more pronounced lowend thump to them.

Sure hard hitter will need to replace head more often than light player but I would prefer replace an aquarian head once at two or three month versus a remo once a month...

I'v found they're great for rock until you get to anything above 14" and then it always sounds to high for the size of the tom.

As a Remo guy, Ambassador, Controlled Sound and Powerstroke 3 all work well for rock.

i had a set of clear Aquarian Performance II heads on my toms and they sounded great when i was playing by myself i switched to evans coated g1s and at first i didnt like them but when i played with the band and heard someone else play them i LOVED them with my 2 ply heads have trouble resonating and cutting through and this isnt a problem for me with single ply heads. 2ply have a nice tone but i have put my 10 and 12 side by side one with single and one with double and i still get the same tone my single just sings longer. i just need to get some classic clears for my resos now and ill be set

Dont forget that Performance II are muffled heads and G1 isn't. For you comparison you should try it with G1 vs G2 or Ambassador vs Emperor or Satin finish texture coated vs Super-2 / response II. Anyway, you're right single ply let the drum sing and resonate.

Unless you are using a head with a sound control ring built in like a Remo Powerstroke 3 or an Evans Dry. And since I am hard hitter, I find that changing heads is just part of the territory for getting to do what I love for a living; playing drums every day!

So, i'm not alone... which is cool :)

On a 14" tom, the g2 sound pretty weird to me. its got a high pitch overtone. I think i'm gonna replace the heads soon. I got 10 and 12 amb heads that i've yet to use.

gerrrr i didnt know proformance IIs had a muffle thing but i guess thats what the big black ring Stupid moment. anyways a single with dent easier but its all how you play i have had my coated g1s on for about 3 months and my 12'' has 3 or for little dents mostly because the tip or my stick chiped but anyways it took me 3 months before it a dent and the pearl at school has pinstripes on it and in about 20 or 30 minutes a dumbass with carbon fibor sticks broke a 13'' head and put some major dents in the 16 floor

How are yours doing? Mine's sounding great and am loving it more than ever! tuned teh drums last weekend and got the 14" to sound deep and low, i'd say, it now sounds how its supposed to sound for a 14x14 tom.
