I haven't heard much about stave drums here. I've been building them for a few years now and I think they're some of the best sounding drums out there (stave snares in general, not just mine)....here's a 5.5x14 claro walnut snare that I recently sold.

Just saw a glowing review of Ford snare drums for those of you with deep enough pockets to allow you to have one of the top of the heaps. I believe it was Drum magazine.

YAMAHA 'ELVIN JONES' SIGNATURE SNARE: 7"x14" 7-ply all Maple shell with 19-ply Maple hoops.

That's one beautiful snare drum!

I was going to post a question but I'll try here first - you may know the answer:

Are the Yamaha Signature drums (I'm looking at buying the Akira Jimbo snare) made in the Osaka factory - Japan - or are they made in the Indonesia (Taiwan now maybe) plant?

Thanks Kona. Japan is engraved on the badge below the words 'Custom Model.' Going by that, I would say Osaka. I think all of the higher end Yamaha drums are made in the Osaka factory.

Thanks - that's what I've read - just thought I'd ask in case they've switched to a new location unknown to me.

Here's a couple of my DW woodies...

The Craviotto 12 x 5 in Azure stain satin oil c/w gold h/w is so versatile, and great where too much volume is an issue like small pub gigs, it still sounds great. The Edge I picked up off ebay a year or so ago for a good price, its a 13 x 6 in cherry lacquer with chrome h/w and really rocks, its loud - I love it when the singer turns around to me & cant stop laughing in the middle of a crazy loud section of a song!!!!

Hey i got this yamaha custom nouveau 14x4 in red pearl maple yday from ebay for £168 ($250) free delivery, apparently it cost over £400 ($600) new and was an ex-artist studio snare. Let me know what you think, whether its a good deal, whether anyone has any experience with these snares and any other comments. It hasnt arrived yet but i will put a video up when it does. Thanks

MTB, your snares are sooo nice. With the calibre of snares here i think mine pales into insignificance, but its my first proper snare and im sure ill be happy with it.

Does anyone have any experience with YAMAHA VINTAGE WOOD HOOPS. Are they more suited to deeper snares and would the difference be lost on my 14x4" yamaha? (previous post). Is the difference only heard in the rim-shot and x-stick?

Thanks v much

Mate, that drum should sing like a good 'un... its a beauty!
I have always fancied a wood hoop snare myself - I like the Yammy Anton Fig signature, but have yet to take the plunge. Most of the woodies I.m aware of are 5 to 6 inchers, but I dont see any reason why it would'nt be worth trying them on your little gem... let me know what you decide...

Im wanting to buy a new snare but im not really sure what to go for. Any sugestions?

Budget? Any 400$ snare and you can't really go wrong. :D
But for me the best snare's are Tama Warlord series, so many different options in three different price classe's and all sound just incredible. (Well dunno about the Titan, havent heard.)
What sound are you in search for? Maple my favorite for snare's, some prefer steel or even carbon. Go to your local music store and try out, it's never hurt anyone.

This message is not for one person, its for everyone who's in search of a good snare.

I just purchased a snare from a drum maker called "Famous" drums out of Ohio and it is his 2*4 snare. Yes, it is actually made out of 2*4's and I have to tell you, it is an AMAZING sounding drum. The crack this 14*5 snare makes compliments the K's and the mellow gretsch that I play. Pics to follow.

This is my baby: Mike Portnoy's Signature Melody Master, the 14" maple one.

I love this.... rimshots give me that wonderful, wet pop to it and I'm just trying to figure out just the right tunings at some point to give it to me whenever I lay into it a bit more. It still sounds great, nice powerful, full loud crack to it with a little bit of a pop still. Not SUPER sensitive, but enough so that even real quiet ghost notes sound good...

hey,

can anyone tell me anything about the sound of the pearl reference 14 x 6,5 wood snare?

i heard hakim omar playing it on the reference series video... increadible sound... but i guess it's the micing and video... is it any close to that? i'm thinking maybe it's TOO loud for no-metal music... and too heavy for fusion, pop-rock style that my current band is playing.

i will hear it live, but of course not with my kit and cymbals.

thanks in advance

2) 1970 Gretsch Stopsign badge 5 1/2 x 14 COB model 4160

3) 1981 Gretsch drop-G badge 5 1/2 x 14 COB model 4160 (Just like the other one, it came with one of my sets.)

5) 2008 Ludwig 5 1/2 x 14 Black Beauty

6) Early 70s Ludwig olive badge Acrolite

8) 2008 Ahead black nickel on brass 6 x 13

9) 2007 Fibes (Keller shell) 5 1/2 x 14 in white marine pearl finish

10) 2008 DW Collector's series 10/6 snare in broken glass fisishply. To match one of my kits.)

I don't actually have this snare drum but it is one that I really want to get someday.

Mapex Black Panther: Walnut 14'' X 6.5''

I like deep snare drums. ( The new DW deep ballad snare looks awesome as well. Around 10'' deep!)

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to get a second snare, for recording more than anything else.

i currently have a yamaha stage custom(its not the BEST kit in the world, but sounds fine with nice tuned heads) and a Sonar S Class snare drum,

My kit turns out really nice recorded but my snare is always so pingy. aside from sticking tape and moon gell all over it, i'd really like to look into getting a wooden snare.

i dont know alot about drums sounds, but i know the wooden snare will be less ringy and maple has a lower sound than birch?

i play in a metal/rock band so i want the snare to crack and cut through but i dont want the ringy overtones.

do i need to look at deep snares or a shallower one?

would appreciate any help anyone can give and i applogise for my current lack of insight.=]

thanks

bloggs, depends on your budget, but sounds like you need something lika a DW Edge, its maple - gives you that woody warmth & quality we all love, but with brass bearing edges - with give it one heck of a crack!! Like all DW snares it has a great versatile tuning range from a low backbeat machine to a real eyeclosing hammerblow at hi tunings, should cut through your band no sweat. Check out the website & there's usually a few on ebay, I've picked a couple up at reasonable prices.go for a14' x 6" or 5.5"

Happy hunting

Which one?

Mapex Black Panther 14x6.5 Maple
Vs
Gretch Renown 14x5.5 Maple
Vs
Tama Art Wood 14.5.5 Maple

Or do you have another suggestion for a wood snare around £150- £200?

Thanks guys, Ved

I'm looking to upgrade my current snare situation, mainly for recording. I'm looking at 3 models that I've found used for under $300:

Ludwig LB400B Chrome Over Brass 5x14
Gretsch Hand Hammered Brass 5x14
Pearl Free Floating Maple 5x14

I'm looking for advice on quality/value, not sound. I have yet to hear any of them because they are in three different cities, I'm aware the 2 brass are going to be way more brighter than the maple. Is maple easier to record due to less ring? From what I've read, I'm leaning towards the Ludwig. Any help to narrow down my choice would be great. Thanks!

I am a Gretsch fan for sure but in any event I would like the looks of the hammered brass over the nickel plated brass.

Does anyone know What the point is of Orange Countys offset lugs. I know OC makes top quality stuff and there must be a reason for it?

its actually kinda funny, story i read is that when custom drum companies first got rolling they bought lugs from other companies, when then made thinner snares the lugs wouldn't fit cause they were too big, so they offset them, you can see on some ocdp snares that the lugs wouldnt fit one on top of another. i guess it looked cool so it stuck.

I'm looking into purchasing a new snare within the next week or so, and I've sorta narrowed it down to three... I believe...

I want a nice high crack, sorta like what they use in hardcore and grind... Here's sorta the sound I am looking for... Wait for the groove to get a better example...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgLG7qP46vk

So, I've narrowed it down to three (or possibly four) snares. I'm not looking for anything super expensive, either, which is why my choices are a little cheaper, but it'll get the job done at this point.

- PDP 805 6x10

- Pork Pie Little Squealer 5x12 maple

- PDP Acrylic 6x10

Or, possibly

- Pork Pie Acrylic 6x14

Hopefully with the example I've provided you with (if you can make it through it, everybody loves Asian chicks!) you can kinda point me into a better direction than I'm going. Thank you!

Hi guys.
I own I think, 33 snare drums?? Unsure. I've been working at 1 studio where gear is stored so here are some drums from that space. I will be happy to answer questions if any are forthcoming. It is probably better this way than simply me posting impressions.

I got the impression that it was not just a limited run, but was added to the line-up of other Supra's and BB's even though the rep said it isn't in the newest version of the catalog, nor was there an official "roll-out". Four prototypes were sold at last year's Chicago show....Bun E. Carlos bought 2 and his friends bought the other two.

You can customize them just like a BBs or Supras...tube or Imperial; diecast or triple flanged; hammered or smooth; P85 or P-86; 5x14 or 6.5x14

Yesterday I put a Remo Vintage A head on the batter side and I like it even better, now

So I recently acquired a Gretsch free floating snare with a maple shell. 5 1/2"x14". I was wondering if these snares were high quality? Is there a market out there for them? I'm going to throw some new heads on it, see if I can tune it to what I'm looking for, but I was thinking about selling it for a brass snare. Any suggestions for a replacement?

I'm looking into some wood hoops for my snare, or maybe buying a new snare with wood hoops. I've heard they make the drum sound warmer, and I love the look of them. But I'm concerned about breaking the hoops, or perhaps they won't keep their shape as well as a regular hoop.

What are some advantages/disadvantages to wood hoops snares, or drums in general?

Probably three of my favourite snares are:

1980's Ludwig Black Beauty with Supersensitive Strainer. Even badly tuned this snare sounds great!

Yamaha Oak Custom just for its sheer joy to play! A really big sound. Still my all-time favourite wood snare.

Pearl Ian Paice Signature Snare for that real retro fat 1970s Ludwig 402 sound. Probably the best steel snare ever made.

Cheers mate. I'll get pic's of all the others someday. Some of my snares are out on recording dates at the moment. I think 16 are out. Plus loads of cymbals. They are due back sometime next week. The drums pictured are kept at 1 studio. My other drums are at another, but I've not worked there for a while.

Here's a couple of other snares of mine. This is from a concert long ago...............

Rogers 14x6 steel and on the floor behind me is a classic Slingerland maple from the 60's. Although I still consider owning it, the "mate" I loaned it too 15 years ago still has it!

i just scored on a vintage premier steel snare(i think) from 1972 that sounds and feels amazing, and the best part about it is that it was free, a friend of mine bought it at a thrift store for 10 bucks and gave it to me because it was just gathering dust in his attic, and everything is all original on it other than the strings holding the snare wires i had to replace those, that snare is probably worth a few hundred but i wouldnt sell it because its the best snare ive played on

Hi guys, I am new to the forum.

Here are two snares I ordered custom made by Epek Percussion (Canada, epekpercussion.com) three or four years ago. I still own the vented one, but my friend owns the unvented one now. Also, the finish is nicer on the vented snare than it looks in the picture, it is almost the same as the greener finish of the unvented snare. I designed the finish myself and the maker created it, using a whitewash of the maple then applying the fade.

13x6, 20 ply maple, 4 2-inch vents, trick strainer, die cast hoops, single hole tube lugs, 30x30 offset bearing edge (sharp as heck, makes it soooooo responsive and cracky):

http://epekpercussion.com/images/13x6regalfade.jpg

14x5.5 9 ply maple, trick strainer, triple-flanged hoops, alternating single hole tube lugs, 22x30 bearing edge:

http://epekpercussion.com/images/P1010400.jpg

And if you are wondering, here is the rest of my kit. The picture has a bit of a blue hue, doesn't quite catch the colors properly. The finish is kind of like the ocean and the beach.

http://epekpercussion.com/images/P1010397.jpg

I love my 20 ply 13x6 vented snare; to this day it is among the loudest snares I have ever heard, and it is almost impossible to make it sound bad. Really, a great choice if you are ok with a dry sound.

Just thought I would share some of the Canadian love with you guys! Thanks!

It's friggin heavy! I've never weighed it though. Snares on, it's a little firecracker, snares off it's a timbale! The lad who made that snare, did my kit as well (it's not as thick, and it's Queensland Rosegum, not NSW brushbox). She's a beauty. I can show pics, but probably not on this thread.

So this is my first post on this forum...hello...my question is this.

I have always wanted a Black Beauty snare but the price is a little out of my range right now (just ordered some dw's and drained the pocket book) what would your insight be on the new Ludwig Black Magic snare? it's a few hundred $$ less and reviews well. I have yet to meet anyone that owns one though and all the drum stores here have them as a custom order so I can't try before I buy.

I would really appreciate your input. Thanks

If you have your heart set on a Black Beauty but have budget issues, try the Pork Pie "Big Black." It's a reasonable substitute at a fraction of the price and you can usually find one in a store so you can try it out before you buy. It's a really nice snare drum. Check it out.

They are both LS403 Ludwig Classic Maple. Which do you like better? the one with mini-classic lugs or with the classic bowties. And yes, I still prefer internal tone controls. Next time I'm getting the 8 x 14

I'm not really good at describing sounds, but it seems pretty warm compared to my brass and aluminum snares. It can be cranked up pretty tight and have a sweet, loud crack, with plenty of ring for a maple snare. I've switched to a Remo renaissance snare head and a Renaissance batter head and it is sooo nice. I guess I'd have to call it fat, warm, and loud. the Renaissance seems to blunt the attack ever so slightly in a nice warm way.

I also have an LS401, with which I can get a higher pitch, but it isn't as full sounding as the LS403

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum.
Having played drums for most of my life, I sold the last of my kits a few years ago and immediately regretted it. So went out and bought a birch shell snare from Sonor to practice on prior to adding a few shells etc. no desire to gig anymore- just for the fun of it. I stripped it down and was amazed to find that the shell is as much as 3/32'' out of true. Is this normal these days? My thoughts are to sell it on and find something better, Pearl Sensitone or similar. What would you recommend?
With thanks in advance.

Hi all.

We all search for the perfect snare (or the perfect arsenal of snares!). Many times we're inspired by the artists we like to give us direction.

I've recently written an article at TheParadiddler.com listing five of my favorite snare sounds of all time:

Great Snares of Rock (http://theparadiddler.com/2009/12/27/great-snares-of-rock/)

It's definitely given me ideas as to which direction I want to go for my next snare, a direction I didn't realize before.

Have a read, and I hope it gives you more ideas on snare selection!

so ive been searching to buy a new snare and ive decided to go with black panther. im either gonna go with the premium series brass or the hammered series brass, but i cant decide. the reason i want to go with the premium series brass it because it offers a deep dark sound, distinct overtones at high tuning, a dry, controlled sound at mid tuning, and a deep punch at low tuning. the reason i wanted the hammered series brass is because it offers a great performance from brushes to an "ear-shattering" rim shot. what i was wondering is, would i get the same qualities of the premium series brass with the hammered series brass snare durm? would the premium series brass snare offer a great rim shot and good brush work aslo? also, does the hammered finish give more of a bright sound, because that is something i dont want. if anyone could answer this, thatd be great.

to my ear hammered brass is darker sounding, with a little less sustain than the unhammered. So if you want a slightly drier and slightly less bright sound, go wth the hammered brass

Got Wood?

Well after years of soul searching i finally have.
Too many years of snare collecting to mention, I have an a small American forest now of DW and John Craviotto snares, which I am totally happy with. But i was always waiting on my preferred drum makers to produce a wood hoop snare of the quality i had become used to. I gave up waiting, and in my search discovered the Yamaha Anton Fig signature snare.
I have really liked this drum for a long time, but even my friends' drum shop & his "mates rates" price was not cheap, and wherever I travelled across the world I always found this snare heavily price capped, or not in stock.
This all changed last week when in Orlando I stopped by Sam Ash. Lo and behold there it was... my Anton Fig Signature, and at a reasonable price too... The sales assistant Jesus (not the real one - pronounced Yea-hus) was a top bloke, I asked to play it and he quickly obliged. A handful of single strokes was all it took to convince me that my suspicions had been right... this was the drum for me. Jesus thought it was a miracle that he didn't have to give me the hard sell, so he threw in a soft bag for its journey back to Wales.
So here's the spec;
Size 14" x 6".
Shell All Maple, 7-ply
Hoops 19-ply Maple Wood Hoop with 10 holes
Snare Short/Hard Hi-carbon steel; 20 strands. Sam Ash threw in Puresound Blaster snare wires, which is what i have on all my DW's so i was well happy with that.
Top Head Remo Ambassador Coated - my regular head
Bottom Head Remo Ambassador Snare
Strainer Release side Minimum strainer to shell contact
Strainer Butt side Simple traditional design
Lug 10 Small Lugs
Finish Solid Black Finish

Here are some pics for your viewing pleasure.
First gig for it is on Thursday... cant wait...

Here's another very nice Yammy snare: SD6105 5.5" copper. These are great for jazz, funk or lighter rock. Sounds like a dry Supraphonic. There are 2 on eBay right now. They're no longer made, but preferred to the current coppers. These have a seamless shell, Dyna Hoops and Maple Custom style lugs. The current coppers have a seamed shell and the crappy Nouveau lugs.

Hello all was just woundering if you would be able to help me out with a few questions that i have.

i am looking at buying a Ludwig snare drum, and now i have narrowed my options down to a New 14x5 Black Beauty, and also a vintage 1960's Ludwig 402 14x6.5 classic lug.

my first question is how much should i expect to pay for the vintage 402 snare which is in good condition in english pounds please thanks?

also i was wondering if there are any differences in the sound between a vintage 402 and a new one because i was told that the hardware is now made in china and gives it a different sound ?

and finally what would you buy out of the two the new blackbeauty or the vintage 402 ? thanks a lot would really appreciate a response

I also HAVE to add the forgotten Ludwig ACROLITE aluminum shell snare.
The 5" and 6.5" shells are great sounding drums, with great sensitivity, and it records easily.

The 6.5 has only been around for about 10 years (a little longer maybe?), but the 5" is a drum I've had since 1975, and it still sounds great.
I dare to say it sounds better than the snares available in the mid-range or semi-pro kits these days.

It was originally one of the student models, because it has only 8 lugs, and no chrome finish, but it sounds way beter than to be just used as a "student" or "beginner" snare.

I saw one in a shop last week and it sounded great.

The 5" has 8 lugs, and the 6.5 has 10.

It's now only available in a Black finish, which has a sparkle/shimmer look that's pretty cool, & not cheap looking.

Even though I have those other snares, I still plan to add a 6.5 Acrolite.....after I get that 6.5 Hammered Bronze....

My Acrolite with an Aquarian Hi-Energy head sounds positively sublime. I don't think I'll ever replace it.

Thought I would post a few pictures of my "Spirit of 2002" now that I got the chance to play with it in a group setting.
As both reviewers said It's one loud drum and can this thing Cut!!!
Both in sound and the bearing edge
one of the Guys that did a review on it said that you could use the drum to shave it's that Sharp!!!
The Original owner told me that out of the three sizes this one was the Rarest of them all it's a 5.5x13"
Sound wise it's very powerful and warm but very crisp and dry at the same time.

Here is what DRUM and MD had to say about these drums

The Original owner had the Reviews from DRUM & Modern Drummer from 1999 and both reviews talk about how warm and crisp this drum is........

From DRUM

"You might imagine that a drum made from cymbal material would be very metallic and ringy, but I found the Spirit of 2002 snare drums to be some of the warmest and most controlled sounding of any of the metal drums I've ever played."

"The real surprise to me, however was the 13" x 5 1/2 drum, which could sustain the kind of low tuning that you might expect out of a 14" x 7" snare, but also tuned up tight for a taut, reggae type of attack."

From Modern Drummer

"A thick metal shell is highly reflective, creating a powerful sound with tremendous projection. yet Paiste's 2002 bronze has such character and tonality that the sound is at once clear and warm, with lots of penetration but no abrasiveness. I've heard loud drums before. This is a loud drum that goes beyond pure volume. It's extremely rich and satisfying."

.......and the crappy Nouveau lugs.....

I've got both types of lugs (Nouveau and standard absolute lugs) on my kits (BCA & MCAN)....I don't find the nouveau lugs to be "crappy" at all...actually I like them at least as much as my standard abs. lugs....the nouveau lugs make changing heads a breeze! and keep most of the lug hardware off the shell...:)

Recently got a good deal on a new Pearl Masters 5.5" x 14" 6-ply maple. Played it side by side vs. the Phil Rudd Signature, chrome over brass from Sonor, which I was originally interested in. Liked the Pearl. Better IMHO than some of the other higher priced models, including deeper units from DW, Gretsch and Ludwig. Food for thought.

Hi Folks,

just looking for some advice re. a new snare. I currently play a Mapex maple snare (14x5.5) that comes with the M-series kit and I was thinking about upgrading to either the Yamaha Steve Jordan (13x6) or the Gretsch Catalina Club (13x7).

Here's a good side by side comparison

http://www.gearguruz.com/video/MDAwMDAwMmJiZA==.aspx

I currently play in a rock/pop band and the vintage/deeper Gresch sound is really nice and fat. On the other hand I've heard great things about the versatility of the Jordan Signature model but I'm just a bit worried it might sound too funky.

Any thoughts? Your input is highly appreciated.

Many thanks and all the best from sunny Spain.

One of my favorites is my 60's Pre-serial number Black Oyster Jazz Festival (chrome over brass top and bottom hoops) Has great tone, nice crack and can be tuned high or low and still sounds nice across the spectrum. Every gigging/working drummer should have a wooden Jazz fest and a Ludwig SupraPhonic in their arsenal of drums, as you can't go wrong with either of those Ludwig snares.

i'm planning to buy a snare and due to some financial constraint (tight budget :| ), i found these snares that are for sale. one is a used 14x5.5 tama superstar snare(not sure what the exact kind of tama superstar and whether it's made of birch or poplar) and a brand new 14x5.5 sonor force 2007 birch snare. i just wanna ask you guys which of these snares is the best buy? thanks in advance. :)

I've got a 5" Acrolite (one of the older gray ones, but not so old that it has a keystone badge). Has anyone put a die cast rim(s) on one of these drums? I'd be curious to hear that.

The snare I'm playing these days is a 6.5 x 14 Pork Pie "Big Black." It's a brass shell with tube lugs. I'm planning to put a die cast hoop on the batter side. I played one in a studio with a die cast and the difference is amazing. Sounds so much fatter and less ringy than mine with the flanged hoop.

I've also got a rare 5 x 13 Tama Rockstar snare. Nice drum. I've only played it with a 2-ply head. Looking forward to hearing it cranked up a bit with a coated Ambassador.

JDC,

I've got a '68 Acrolite and I love it as is. I don't think I'd dig the die casts on that drum. I just enjoy most of the honk and can tame it with just a tiny bit of moon gel - if I have to.

I could see putting die casts on the Big Black. I still would probably leave it as is but might go with die casts to dry it out a bit.

$100 for a brass snare? Could be tough mate....even used. I'm no expert on US prices, so may be well off the mark though.

There are many Black Beauty knock off's available......Worldmax, Pork Pie and many others make a nickel over brass shell, but for $100.....I really don't know. You may well be a chance for a Pearl Sensitone brass if you're thrifty enough.

Have you checked out ebay?

Or if you can save a little more, you'll open up your options.

Oh my. 16 pages and NO ONE posted a Radio King? Here is one I picked up recently. A lady posted this one on Ebay under the heading "Drum, figurines and miscellaneous doilies." It cost me more to ship it than it did for me to buy the drum. Plus it came with a couple troll dolls and about 15 doilies. All I had to do was replace the heads and wipe the dust off. Everything was original, museum quality condition. Enjoy - 1951 Slingerland Super Gene Krupa Radio King Snare. 14" X 8". Its everything you've heard.

You know what I think is a total sleeper in the good, affordable snare market is the Tama Metal Works series. I played the 5.5x14 drum at a Sam Ash the other day and it just about kills! You can find 'em on eBay for a little over $200 new. If I wasn't so happy with what I have, I'd get one. It's just a standard steel 10-lug drum with triple-flanged hoops and it can definitely do the job. They come in other sizes too, but this was the one they had on the floor.

The best snare i've tried by far was a Ludwig black beauty brass snare. It was 6.5x14 and had a great tone to it. Got a load of different sounds from it, but I loved it tuned quite low and fat were it was gnarly sounding. Totally awsome!

I finally decided to upgrade my snare situation last year and went on a hunt to buy a nice wood Tama snare. I had fully expected to end up with a Starclassic Maple or some thing along those lines.

Instead I ended up with a Gretsch Hammered Brass snare. After playing all of the wood snares at three different music shops I figured I would give a few of the metal snares a try for comparison sake. When I hit this snare I was instantly in love. It was the exact snare sound I had been looking for. I tried out several more metal snares but nothing came close to this snare.

Its been about a year now that we have been together and I am as happy as ever with my decision to buy this snare. If you are in the market for a new snare, I would definitely recommend giving Gretsch a try.

Thanks. Yeah, these are great drums and will be keepers for me. The 5.5 is in my top 3 snares. I just also picked-up a 5.5 Yamaha seamless brass. I'm surprised that the copper seems to have a bit more bark to it than the brass. I thought it would be the other way around, but the brass is kind of mellow (the 2 drums have same batter heads, different hoops and different wires).

I'm looking to upgrade my snare. Price range is around 150-350 used. I'm currently using the stock Mapex M series I got with my kit 3-4 years ago. Problem is, after a while you get a little picky and expect more pop and fullness from it.

I play mostly extreme metal (ie. in blast beats, snares often get drowned into the mix), so like I mentioned I would like something vivid and resounding with a good deal of pop. As well, in addition to extreme metal, I also enjoy some dnb/groove/jazz-styled drumming and would thus prefer something that would double as a contender in those areas.

Is the Black Beauty new? And is it a 14 x 6.5 (LB417)?

A$700 is a great price for a brand new BB of that size. The best I've seen is around the $800 mark (ebay). A new one can retail for around $1100.

Of course if it's used, it's possibly a little too high IMHO. Several months ago I picked up a hammered bronze supra, about a year old in perfect nick for A$550. New they retail at around the same price as the BB. I thought that was cheap for what it was though....maybe offer $600 to $650??

That said, you're a/b-ing two different snares. One is maple and the other is brass. Determine the sound you want first, then determine if you're prepared to pay the price.

I'm fairly new here and just put in my dues by going through this entire thread. Great stuff!!!

Here's what I'm beating on these days:

1990 14x5" Weckl Signature:

http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr160/ShaneRoney/weckl_snare02.jpg

Late 70s or early 80s Acrolite:

New 14x5.5" Yamaha Copper:

http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr160/ShaneRoney/Copper_snare/Copper_Nouveau06.jpg

14x5.5" Pearl Sensitone Steel:

http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr160/ShaneRoney/pearl_vision/pearl_vision04-lg.jpg

I also have a Force 3003 (birch) 14x5.5" that I have no picture of. The Weckl sig is my workhorse and has treated me well for 20+ years. The Acrolite is well documented. The Copper is brand new and sounds awesome, but time will tell. The Pearl is OK but a bit dull. The Sonor birch is great and has a sweet crack. I may put wood hoops on it in the future.

Here's my new snare.
Craviotto Custom Shop 6.5x14 Special Birdseye Maple High-Lacquer Steam-Bent Solid-Shell Snare with Trick GS007 Throw Off and DW 3P Butt Plate, made in 2009.
And from May of 2010, my SJC Custom 6x14 Hyrbid 10 ply and acrylic snare with diecast hoops.
Pictures I have of both are too big to upload here but I got pics of my SJC snare in my personal gallery in my profile on here I think.
The SJC Snare can't too much get too good a low tone, but only a good high pitch and slightly above mid.
My Craviotto sounds good at virtually any tuning range.

Hi i am looking to get a new 14x6.5 KD custom snare drum and i cant decide on what is a good mix of woods i am thinking of getting Rosewood over Mahogany i am not to keen on birch as a few people have suggested this to me already so thats a deff no. If the rosewood isn't ideal then could anyone suggest some other softer woods to go over the mahogany as am no expert on woods but i am pretty sure that Mahogany is a heavy wood that will absorb sound and vibration and if it was solid Mahogany the snare would be a "Dead drum" and this isn't what am looking for.If it helps i normally tune my snare to a medium tuning and occasionally play with brushes as well as sticks. So if anyone can help with me out to what am looking for that would be good .

Mahogonys a wood for hard hitters and isn't that sensitive/ good with brushes. Just look at yamahas rock tour kit for proof. Brady snare drums are good though.

My new snare has just arrived! Mapex Black Panther. Premium Walnut. Brown Sugar Burst finish. Black Hardware. 42 Strand Snare. 13" x 6". I am so happy with it!

I've been using a piccolo snare for the last 12 years or so, and I have recently fallen out of love with it. It's limitations were reveled in the last recording session I did, where the snare sound was heavily compressed and results left me cringing. I'll never get rid of it though, too many good times! I might crank it up and use it like a timbale.

Just picked up a fine example of Simon Phillips' "Gladiator" snare drum by Tama. It's a pretty early model (#127) from when it still had the brass styling. Although this is the 11th snare I have presently it's the very first Tama for me in 25 years! Used it on my gig at the weekend & was blown away by it. Not even changed the heads - just took the batter off, cleaned the bearing edge & re-tuned top & bottom. The drum is so good I'm actually selling a couple of others because this drum is going to be used a fair bit.

I have an old Supraphonic LM 400 (5 inchs deep) from 1968. Its I think the last year they made them Chrome over brass until they switched to chrome over metal. It is for sure very versitile for any type of music from jazz or blues, through rock, and right through to heavy metal. For rock i might suggest however getting the 6.5 inch deep Supraphonic, which i would love to get, but the regular 5 inch deep ones are great for anything!

anyone know a good snare that goes for around $100-$200? it needs to have a nice pop with normal hits and a good crack with rim shots. i dont care what heads come with it first, i can change those out.
sorry, didnt wanna start a new thread, and seeing as this is the GOOD SNARE THREAD, i thought this would be the place to ask.

You might be able to get a nice used Ludwig black magic for around 200 bucks! I heard they are great, but have never played one myself... they look great though!

'68 will be a chrome over aluminium. Chrome over brass production stopped in '63 and started again in the early 90's from memory.

Walnut!! This is kind of the new Mahogany. Here is one I built recently. And just FYI, heavy wood does not mean it will sound "dead." In fact mahogany is a softer wood than birch or maple which makes it lighter. So Mahogany would actually sound warmer and more "alive" than the harder alternatives. The harder the wood in a snare drum, the more of a crack sound you will achieve. The softer the wood, the warmer and fuller it should sound.

Walnut is a great alternative to some of the more "main stream" woods.

This snare was build for an amazing "top 10" record jazz drummer. And he never stops getting compliments on the sound.

Im in DESPERATE need of a snare upgrade from my Mapex VXB (came with kit) snare. Any suggestions to what kind of snare I could get for an affordable price that sounds nice when played real tight?

Gatton Corian Snare- - The Gatton Corian Shell has visual and sonic characteristics that are light years beyond any wood or metal drum.
Unheard of and (thought to be) impossible dynamic ranges are now easily achieved, unbelievable tone and volume are now accessible with little effort, and a variety of go-to Drum sounds are available in one instrument with absolutely no compromise.

Man, that Mapex Walnut is the snare I want, but in the 5.5x14. Mapex came out with a totally new line of Black Panthers. Those walnuts were part of the previous line. I should have bought one a year ago; they were still around at that time. You gotta just keep looking, and keep your eyes on eBay. One will pop up eventually.

SCORE! I found one in the size I was looking for, 5.5x14. Found it at Chuck Levin's outside of Baltimore. Brand new; was a display model. Looks like they have a couple of others of the old Black Panther line, a black Maple and a silver sparkle Thick Maple. Was a good buy, too. $100 less than they were selling for a year ago and got free shipping. It looks and sounds amazing. Nice and crisp, with a great crack. Just what I was looking for.

Here's a link to their snares. They also have a Carolina Drumworks Maple ply snare (which I believe is a Keller shell).

carter used it with dave matthews band on the central park album, i think he uses ocheltree snare drums otherwise. but anyway, this snare has the best crack ive ever heard. it exploads, and then you dont expect it to have such incredible sensativity at low volumes. no ring, overtones get a listen for yourself

Amazing technology hans't caught up enough here to post smples of snare/drum/cymbal sounds with these amazing pics. Just taking someones word for their taste doesn't mean others will like/agree as their styles may not be the same.

I am in a similar situation.

I have a 6.5"x14" Yamaha Bamboo custom which I love dearly but I am now playing with a new band with a much funkier sound. I will have to sell the Yamaha with its lovely warm deep tones which I'll find hard to bear but I'd like to find something with a similar warmth but lighter, higher pitch and funkier snap (I'm not very good with technical terminology).
I'm not convinced by metal snares as I've owned a few (all be it not very good ones) but am willing to be persuaded otherwise.

I wouldn't mind trying out the smaller bamboo custom but I cannot find another one anywhere, any ideas?

I just bought a new DW Collector's Series kit. My snare is a 5X14 6-ply. I am extremely pleased with the sound - not too much ring, either. Danny Seraphine just used my snare in a clinic with minimal re-tuning from the factory tension. Both the drum and Danny sounded incredible !

Looks great! Enjoy it!!

What on yours makes it a B stock?

My COB is a B and the main "flaws" are on the inside. I couldn't even find anything on the outside until I took the heads off to change and take the gaskets off. Then I saw at one angle (with everything off the shell) the very slight finishing flaw that saved me 300 bucks!!

The drum sounds fabulous, and that's all that mattered to me anyway. I'm sure yours has a fantastic sound as well.

I have been playing Supraphonic snares for 40 years. Also a few others but recently found a couple of great deals on a Acrolite and a Ludwig Chicago Aluminum 6 1/2"x14" snare.
I was told the 6 1/2x14" was classified as a Supraphonic. Is it? or a 10 lug chrome Acrolite. They both sound great. I think the 6 1/2"x14" came with the anniversary sets they sold years ago. Ludwig now makes a chrome steel snare in this size but not anywhere near the price this one was.

I'm sure many of you have seen the Pacific maple snare with maple hoops. Its a 10ply maple shell like the DW Collector's, but no re-rings. I bought one a couple of years ago. Liked it, but didn't love it. I just couldn't like the feel of the wood hoops. Its been in my collection, but haven't gigged with it. To try something else, I bought a pair of Pearl Mastercast die cast hoops and sold the wood hoops. Now, it sounds great and has the feel I'm used to. Taking it on a gig this weekend with my RC's.

I just bought a used ludwig drum kit for 150 off craigslist. The toms are in pretty bad condition, the bass drum is in alright condition (sounds amazing), and the snare is in very good condition. I have been trying to identify exactly which acrolite snare it is and how much it's worth.

It has the orange peel finish (the grey rough texture). The badge is the blue and olive with rounded edges. I seem to be finding mixed information about what year ludwig made that type of drum. I found a ludwig acrolite that looked just like it on ebay that said it was a 90's model.

Does anyone know what year this snare was made and how much it's worth?

New member here. Saw this thread and it caught my attention. So many awesome drums here!!! Anywho, this is my new (to me) toy. Ludwig Acrolite of unknown vintage. Tube lugs, Puresound brass snare wires, coated Evans G2 batter head/Evans Hazy snare head.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y52/valkyrievf2/DSC_5003.jpg

I used the standard P-85 throwoff switch--after buying the lugs, I was over budget, haha.

Still new to the tuning thing, but this drum hits hard!!! My previous snare was a Pearl Forum, and while deeper (6.5"), it wasn't anywhere near as boomy as this one. Could be the tuning, but this drum just seems to have some presence... I am loving it, though!

That's a cool looking Acrolite. Someone must have painted that at some point. How does the finish look up close?

It looks really good up close. I painted it myself. Multiple layers of etching primer and satin finish blue. Wanted something to offset the chrome.

Sorry yet another Ludwig Black Beauty...

Craigslist can really go both ways, eh. Last Friday I was set to go pick-up a Yamaha Roy Haynes sig. snare when the seller calls to tell me someone offered more than the asking price. I couldn't compete. I have been wanting that snare for a long time so needless to say I was kinda pissed. A new one isn't an option.

Monday CL has this Ludwig BB on offer at a STUPID price that I could not pass on even though I wasn't in the market for one. I figured I could just resell it, if I didn't like it, at an easy profit. It's brand-new w/the original skins.

As for the stock skins and snare wires, how do they rate? I plan to replace them w/Ambassador batter and snare side, along w/ PureSound snare wires (I already have). What do ya think?

How do you get the pictures to show up in the posts. I have a real treat to show you guys. A snare that my wife bought me for my birthday this past year. I think many of you might not know about this custom Canadian drum company building solid wood snares out of full sections of log. They are made out of Canadian rock maple from their own forest. The name of the company is Luka Percussion and they also make full kits. Can you say resonance? These snares are truly solid. Not the steam bent ones but one solid piece and therefore the only truly vertical grain through and through. I have several steam bent Noble & Cooley snares and those are great too but this is really unique craftsmanship.

I also have a vintage early 1960's preserial 5X14 Ludwig COB Supraphonic snare on its way.

I have many snares and kits and will post them all over time in their respective places. I have two of these early Ray Ayotte era snares. This one comes with a matching 5 piece kit. I bought the kit separately from a pro drummer who started a family and needed more room for kids and finally found the snare that matched it on eBay.

Hey everyone, fairly new here, sure I will become a regular :)

After a few years of playing I have finally become a gigging drummer, slowing getting my gigging kit together. Cymbals I have pretty much decided on but I'm not to sure about snare drums.

Basically, I know the guy who owns the local music venue, and while we were rehearsing he was chatting to us about how he has a load of endorsements (not really sure how, but there is no reason I have to disbelieve him). He said he is endorsed by Tama and Gretsch, and a few other guitar and cymbal companies, and he may be able to get me around 50% off the gear.

Leading me to the point, I am looking for either a Tama or Gretsch Snare, up to the price of around £400, and I don't really know where to start. At the moment I am playing with a singer-songwriter leaning towards a rock edge, but I play a lot of styles so I am looking for something versatile that I could cover most styles with.

Any help would be much appreciated :)

I am pretty sure being sponsored means you only play one companies drums. Sounds fishy to me.

Thats what I thought, and as far as I know he doesn't play with any groups. But the producer and manager I have been working both know him and his dad, they said that he could get us discounted gear as well. Seems like its all on the level.

Well I haven't chimed in for a long time but I guess it's never too late to start. Years ago, I became obsessed with snare drums and in particular they're sound characteristics which lead me on a journey to building. This is presently my favorate. She's a solid steam bent quilted maple 14 X6.5".

Had a bit of extra money from working so much that last few weeks, so I decided to buy a snare drum. Got myself a Pearl Sensitone Steel 5.5x14, and played around with it in the store for a bit. It is extremely sensitive, responding to the flick of a fingernail, is extremely loud and ringy, and the rimshots will take your frigging head off! I'm going to use it at band practice tomorrow, and can't wait! It was a hell of a deal too. $150 Canadian for a great drum. I'm so excited to try it with my full set tomorrow!

I am really enjoying my dw 6.5x14 edge snare. It's very loud so it cuts, it is very versatile and just overall feels good.

My 5.5 x 14 Steel Sensitone is amazing! Cuts so well through the mix, ghost notes/rolls are very articulate, and rimshots have a great crack. It sounds great with my set, and I was able to pull off intricate stuff that my bigger snare couldn't pick up. I've been using 6.5 x 14 drums for most of my drumming career, but I'm really excited about this smaller, steel drum now. I can't believe the deal I got! Could rave all day.

good day masters! i just bought a tama snare (2nd hand) and my problem is i have no idea what exactly is its model. it is 14"x5", has 10 lugs, has star-cast hoops and starclassic snare wires (dont know if they were just replacements by the previous owner) and it is relatively heavy for an ordinary steel snare (i think). my friend thinks it is chrome-plated brass. here are some pictures. can you help me figure this out guys? thanks! :)

Hey everyone, sorry to be a bother, but is anybody interested, or knows someone who might be interested, in selling their 1980's Tama Superstar Snare in cherry wine finish? It's the missing piece to my classic double-bass kit! Any help would be much appreciated, sorry to hassle all of you! Thanks for your time!

Its pretty nice for the price. All maple, its my absolute favorite size 7x13, and has a beautiful finish. Im going to order some tight screws and a black die-cast hoop for the top and see how it sounds.

My Joyful noise 6.5x14 Legacy maple. Solid steam bent 250 year old maple. The more I play it, the better it sounds. I love the sleek strainer, much less gaudy than most I've seen and the design and function is beautifully simple. The sound of this drum is powerful and never chokes. It has the bite and projection of a metal drum with the warmth and body of the maple. I'm lovin' it.

I just bought this beauty on ebay and have had it now for four days. It's in "used" condition, but considering its age I'm very happy with it - no rust or bad marks, just very minor (but extensive) chipping to the black chrome plating... and the sound... WOW!

Hey all. Wow, can you feel the snare love?

I recently had the chance to play with the SuperDrum12 14x8 chrome snare. This is an awesome sounding snare - a pro snare at a value price. I've written a complete review of the snare, so if you're in the market, you may want to check this one out.
