From a couple years ago.. a couple of months after I got my new Mapex Saturn kit. The song is "chank" off of Scofield's "A Go Go" record.

Please offer any criticism you can think of.. even if it's the most minute nitpick you can think of..!

Within the first seven seconds I knew I would love it. This is my music.

I love the little fill you did shortly after the minute mark and the over all groovy feel.

By personal taste I would love to hear more of the kick and the snare a little tighter (my minute nitpick as per requested lol), but with this style of music it's more about the feel and you definitely have that. I also love the trashy crash, and makes me wish I could play on mine right now but kids are asleep! I think I'll just bring my drum kit outside tonight. My neighbor's are shooting off fireworks, I bet no one will hear the difference... hehehe

Now if I can only find a way to fuse southern metal with funk I'd be all set.

Yeah, the bass drum mic got knocked into by the horn players a couple of times (very tiny stage), so it wasn't where it should've been to get the best sound. And in hindsight I'm not too crazy about the snare sound either.. I was trying to get a fat '80s sound and only mildly succeeded.

That trashy crash is a 16" Wuhan traditional series.. love that lighter-than-air "hiss!" it's got.

Nice groove! I agree with SBE, your fills are wicked funky, and the rest of the group is really tight too.

Hey, you are fuuuunky!
And your dynamics are also great, cool fills and great band grooving. Overall I don`t have critism for you, i like it.

What kit and cymbal did you use there??

I love that kind of groove man, I just wish I could hear the bass drum a little better. The fills are fantastic!!

I really love the john scofield MMW stuff and this is defintely diggable. I really enjoy your playing. If I had one thing I wouldve liked is at the beginning of the song if you wouldve pushed your tempo along a little more. Im not saying you were dragging or anything, but I would have just grooved on it a little more if you were a little more on the front side of the beat. I thought it was really cool though and like I said, I really enjoyed it.

Many, many thanks. The drum set is a Mapex Saturn Pro 6 piece, and the main cymbals you hear are:

14" Paiste 2002 Sound Edge hats
16" Wuhan Traditional series crash
20" early 70s Zildjian A ride, approximately medium thin

you also hear a little bit of:
two cymbals (one cracked) piggybacked on eachother (white noise thing at 0:53)
20" K Custom Dry Light ride (downbeats at 1:03 and 1:49)
18" 2002 Medium crash (1:44)

20" K Custom Dry Light ride (downbeats at 1:03 and 1:49)

Oh yeah!!! How do you like your baby? I`ve got the 22" version and i just love mine!

LOVE it. I can pull so many sounds out of it, it's an absolute joy to play. The best thing is the control to it.. you can go from a big expansive crash to a tight tick-a-lick to an accented smack with the shank of the stick in no time, and everything will come out with perfect clarity. If it had a little bit stronger of a bell I'd probably use it as my primary ride instead of the 1970s A, but even then I love the tone of it - very crystally and bell-like.

Overall I like how it has that modern "trashy" edge most K Custom rides seem to have nowadays, but it still has enough tonal purity to it to sound good in a more melodic, even classical, setting.
