I bought the 5 x 14. Does anyone have reviews of this drum. I like the sound, but not in love with it. I just replaced my Maple Pacific LX snare drum with it. Payed $250 for the snare, so couldn't pass that deal up. What do you guys think of the DW metal snares? I am also having a problem setting the snares so that they come off the drum when I drop the mechanism. The snares are still loosely on when I throw the "throw off". How do I fix that. I am driving myself nuts.

On top of the throwoff mechanism there should be a screwing type thing that you can use to tighten the snares

i reviewed this snare briefly when i was buying snares. I passed on this snare for the Chad Smith, which I felt it had a better tone for the same price (or close to the same price). You can try to search for it -- it lives somewhere on the board.

both the trick and nickelworks throw-offs are killer and mike makes a really cool device to allow you to convert to these easily.

So if you weren't in love with it, why did you buy it?

I bought it to try it out with my kit and got a huge discount on it. It was already on sale for $299. He sold it to me for $249 and it has a 30 day return policy. So, I can always take it back. So, I do love the sound of the drum, but the throw off is kind of cheap feeling. It seems that once I tighten it enough to get that nice snare crack, when I open the throw off, the snares are still hitting the drum a bit. I still have the plastic strips and have to hit the store to get the wax twine. I am sure that will help out.

I did hit the Chad Smith Pearl drum and really liked that sound too. I just think that the DW snare is built better. I was actually down to either of those two and decided on the DW. With the discount, the DW was cheaper as well.

Well with the 30 day guarantee you can't go wrong then. You can definately retrofit that strainer and rectify the snare release problem. If you like the SOUND though keep it.

Your strainer is too tight if it continues to contact the snare head with the strainer thrown off. Loosen the screws holding the "plastic strip" and ever so slightly loosen the strainer some. you can always tighten the strainer by tightening the screw to get back to your prefered sound. The plastic strip is still new and probably not stretched yet. You will have to retighten it again after a while as the strip stretches unless you intend to replace it with cords as you stated.

I replaced four of my DW drop throw offs with Tricks and couldn't be happier. I like DW snares a lot, but the throw offs leave a lot to be desired.

Another option is the Dunnett throw off. The mounting bolts have adjustable spacing and it will retro fit to most shells. Don't give up on the drum. Just up grade the throw off.

I wish I could find a black throw off. I did decide to keep the drum. The more I play it, the more I love it! I just need to replace the throw off. I looked at the Trick and other throw offs and cant seem to find a black one. My whole drum is black including hardware. It would look funny with a chrome throw off, you know?

there are many black throwoffs out there.... search drum supply house and drum foundry.. here are 2 high end throwoffs in black. there are cheaper models that work well too, but nothing really works as well as these 2.. the Nickelworks throwoff is EXCELLENT but doesn't come in 100% black so i didn't post a link to it...

here's the black version of the Dunnet Throwoff:
