black batters?

so whats the difference in sound between clear heads and black heads?
im interested in some black batters with clear reso (aquarian) all one ply.

how would that sound?

also somone told me that black heads kinda mimic coated heads, is that true?

Black heads have a tendency to have a little deeper sound. I have them on my reso's and I'm switching back to clears for a little more tone and brightness.

thats good im looking for alil deeper sound, without having big power toms type of thing.
i mean im shure its not that much change in depth but still alil bit deeper sound is good with me.

so what would the difference between a 1 ply black head and a 2 ply?
i was thinking about aquarian classic clears in black or the pinstripe in black? which would be best for loud, cutting, sharp toms with minimal overtones????and what advantages are there between 1 ply versus 2 ply?

With one-ply heads you get a more open sound, with a little more sustain and volume. Two-ply heads make a focused sound, with less sustain and overtones, and also slightly reduced volume.

For the sound you are describing, I think one-ply heads might work better, but I'm not sure.

Well you kind of want the best of both worlds there. Loud and Cutting and minimal overtones.
Loud and cutting would be the single ply but minimal overtones is more the 2 ply. A 2 ply head is also more durable if you have a tendency to play hard. Guess it's a matter of what's more important to you.

Just for curiosity sake why exactly are you wanting the black batters?

I would stay away from black batters all together. They have a very plastic-like attack, even more so than clear heads. The black coating is usually thicker than a regular white brush-surface coating, so the heads have a more dead sound right out of the box.

The only exception are the Jack Dejonette (sp?) heads from Aquarian. They have a full, jazzy tone and only come in a one ply, so not the most durable for the toms if you are a heavy hitter. If you are used to single ply tom heads, then try these. I had a set on my Starclassics, what a great sound. They are great snare heads too. If you think that you might dent one ply heads, then go for anything in a two ply except for black batters, they are too one dimensional.

i wouldnt get black batters for the reason that they scuff up your sticks, unless youre diffrent then me and dont care about your sticks or how clean they look

I think on some of them the black coating rubs off on the tips of your sticks. Not really a big deal, unless you're playing on someone else's drums with the same sticks and they don't want to end up with lots of black marks on their heads.

idk ive always wondered what they sound like, and theyde look pretty good on my red drums. idk its not really bout appearance, i just wanted to know how they sound, people said they sound kinda deeper, and im all for that.
so i guess next time i have some monies and am not spending it on my gf i'll buy some.

but would it rub off more using nylon tips or wood? or no difference?
