Okay, I've searched alot on this one. The reason I want to go black resonant is mainly visual. I own a white set and I think the black resonants would look sweet. One of my favorite drummers ( Carter Beauford ) goes with this set-up and I've always liked the way his set sounds. He used to use Evans clear g2's over black resonants and now uses Remo clear emperors over black ambassadors. I realize he uses Yamahas compared to my Keller shelled DW's, but you can't complain about his sound. If anyone can convince me to go with clear resonants, my ears are open. BTW, I'm talking rack toms here in sizes 10, 12, & 14. I have floor toms in 16, & 18 but am not concerned with going black resonants on those, unless they would sound good. My bass drum is already dialed in with an SKII / Ebony PS3. Thanks.
p.s. I play 90% non-miced gigs, in a dynamic Rock / blues / fusion / funky band.

Actually I want to keep this thread focused on black RESONANTS. If you don't mind can you start another thread on black batters? Thanks.

as far as i know the black resonant will give you a little darker tone. i don't know just how much but i'd say give it a shot.

Something else to note on this subject. Remo only has the ebony ambassador which is a 10 mil head. ( no diplomat 7 mil ebony ) Evans has a 7 mil Resonant Black head. So if I go with Remo it will be 10 mil. Evans will be 7 mil.

I've got the same setup you are talking about right now. G2's over Ebony ambassadors (had emperors as batters as well). The tone isn't bad, a little deeper/darker sounding than the clears. I'm switching back to clears to brighten the tone up a bit. The ebony's do give you a darker tone compared to a clear. Having a black kit with silver hardware I did it for appearance as well (did this many many years ago) Sound isn't bad just a little different than the clears.

So when you are talking about G2's and Emperor batters, they are clear, right? I think if I go with the Evans black resonants they won't be as deep/dark. The Evans website has the black resonants in the brighter category. They are a 7 mil head.

Yes my batters are clear. When I put my ebony reso's on they only came in ambassador weight, I don't even know if evan's had the glass heads at that time.

I also forgot about Aquarian, which sells both 7mil (high frequency) or 10 mil classic clear (black)
