View Full Version : How to get as much RIIINNNG as possible

So, everyone else want to get rid of ring, I want to get more ring! :-)
The thing's about snare drum tuning, my 13''x4'' snare drum, it sounds absoulutely beautiful, BUT seems kind of dead sounding to me (Coated Ambassador on top, Ambassador snare sade - bottom) I use absolutely no muffling (that would be pretty dumb to use muffling and wonder why the sound is muffled/dry lol)
I like to tune it pretty tight, but - never choked, so that's not an issue
Suggestions? A Diplomat batter head?

get a steel drum, my cheap pearl rings like a bitch I love it. Pangtastic. As for tuning it and heads I just use the usual, ambasador and dimplomat, tune it high on the top and low on the bottom.

A clear head will ring a little more than a coated one. Also, tune both heads as close as possible in pitch

Gday Raymond,
At the end of the day, a 13x4 drum is quite small. Youll get the snappiness, but it will never be a big resonant sounding drum.
Your choice of heads seems ideal to me - I guess if you were to go thinner, you could open the sound a little more, but durability would be almost non existent.
Have you tried different brands of head? Im using the Aquarian Texture coated head on my 14x5 and although they are supposed to be thicker than Ambassadors, I get more life out of the drum than what the Remo's did.

I've tried using a clear head - it just doesn't work for me!
Also, I'm aware of the fact that I can get more tone if both heads are tuned to the same pitch, put that's not exactly what I want, also, I allways tune the bottom head tighter than batter again for the tone I get with that kind of tuning
I want a lively sound and +/- I have it but what I'm trying to achieve is a natural echo to it, I'm pretty close, but the more I mess with it the deader it starts to sound lol
The more I think about it, the more it looks like a coated Diplomat weight head would be the answer, and maybe a diplomat snare side
thanks, Jeff, merry xmas!!

Some good ideas there, thanks! Durability is not an issue, I have never even dented a snare head, in fact I have a 6 year old clear diplomat on my practice kit's flor tom, it's covered with stick marks all over it, the center is worn out but it has no dents! :-)
I've never tried Aquarians but I have heared a lot of good things about them, just that it's easyer to get Remo heads where I live, brand is not important to me

sorry, missed your post!
I really don't want to replace my 13x4 limited edition, it's as good as I could ever dream, I just want to increase the ring a bit, so I want to heare some ideas from you, guys!

steels fo have more pang though, well in my experience. I had two picalos once, I got rid of the maple one cause it did'nt ring enough that was why a bought some picalos for the pang, the steel is much moroe agressive in the pang department. I see what your saying though, I don't blame for not wanting to more drums to achieve a sound, im sure if you keep tinkering with it you will get the sound you want.

I have a Brass 14x6.5 Pearl FF and the ring I get is amazing. Great for D&B type rhythms if you play near the edge of the head.

Try an Evans J1 Etched. It sounds perfect for you. Rather thin and very open because its etched not coated.

i second the evans J1 head.
I've got it on my 13in pearl wood snare and i get a ton of ring unmuffled, and can adjust the amount i get with the internal felt muffling thingy.

Do the opposite of how you tune it now, tune the bottom losser and the batter higher, not sure if it will work though?!?!?!?!?!?

i dont know why you would want alot of ring, but i hvae a 12 x 4 tama steel snare that is tuned really tight. The batter head is a evans resonant, and the snare side head is like the regular remo hazy. Without the e-ring its SUPER ringy.
So id say just put on thin heads, tighten em really tight.
