Awesome!! "How it's Made" is one of my favorite shows. I didn't know they did an episode on Zildjian.

Thanks! Forget Fort Knox! I want to break into the Zildjian cymbal vault....and live there!

thanks alot for the link mind_drummer!
that is a very sweet video, nice to see how they are made! I would like to pay a bit money and would go to the factory and make my own unique cymbal. Not lathed...over hammering, 21", thin, light weight, a few rivets etc.
LOL, this would be nice! =)

again, good video, really enjoyed it...also the spacy music in the backround! :-D

Very nice. Didnt know they used a laser to etch in the Brand and serial number. And I didnt see any hand hammering, another surprise.

I saw that one a while back on tv. Ya for some reason I thought they had a small section dedicated to the hand hammered cymbals but I guess not. Anyways, a really cool video but I was wondering, wouldn't that quality control engineer be pretty deaf after a year of work because I don't recall seeing any ear protection.

There was a similar one going around of the SABIAN factory too. It showed the difference in the machines used in their AA and the guys hammering the HH models. Kinda neat.
The neat videos are of the Bosphorus factory where its just a bunch of guys sitting around making them by hand. The lathing is my favorite part, watching it spin around and such. Perhaps the quality control guys are going deaf as the cymbals have changed so much in sound over the years :)

yeah it has been discussed at length in other threads how Zildjian does not hand hammer any of their cymbals -- not even the K Cons. Sabian only partially hand hammers a few models, i dont think Paiste does any. Bosphorus and others do hand hammer their cymbals, but, like Sabian, do not check the sound as they are hand hammering -- sound is only checked when the project is finished. So to that end, maybe there is little point in hand hammering at all.

Indeed, but I think with too much earprotection he couldn't quite control the sound...

indeed, pretty lame it's all done by machines accept for that one part where the guy scratshes off something from the cymbal

heh, that's funny. the first thing i thought about when i opened this Zildjian vid, was to compare it with what i saw at bosphorus "factory"... well, that's just great, in Zildjian they have a big office, rubber gloves, some special suits, specialistic machinery, all that stuff. a real factory, one would say.

and what do we have in Bos? some smithy on the total outskirts of Istanbul, people wearing their casual clothes, old oven, simple machinery, come on! and they sound perfect. i bet, Zildjian's factory looked a bit like the Bos one about 50, 60 years ago, and that were their best years :).

some small pics i made there.
