Can`t close my mouth mate. These pics should be in a "I have got an awesome kit"-book. Just cool...everything on it looks so nice, DW sounds great, looks great...and these cymbals: K Cons and a Special dry Ride...wow.

PS: Is your set-up influenced by Steve Smith a bit? =)

Thanks for the great reception of my new kit, guys! I am in love with these babies. I have been playing non-stop since I set it up. And, the neighbors have all came over, couple by couple, kids in tow, hot chocolate and drinks in hand. Everyone on the block (or earshot, anyway) have been really excited for me. All the men waiting for a turn at the kit! ... LOL. They can't complain now!

Mapex -- Thanks for commenting on the pic. It's the one I didn't take!

Karl and snowdogyyz - Yes, Steve Smith influenced me ... 100%. I love his DVD and listen to it daily as I practice some of his techniques and grooves. He has a musicality that I have just not heard from some of the other drum gods, though I know they have it, I just have to find the correct tape. I decided to get the exact size as Smith, ran it by a few guys here, and they said, cool. I ordered his exact size drums, and even went for his LP setup! I love the latin thing and have my first lesson tomorrow night. Can't wait! Anyway, the thing about the 8 inch depth is that being shallow, not only does it sound really nice, but together with the kick being 20", I can get my toms lower to the ground, and that way I can have them flatter. Makes it easier for me to play on the toms when the heads are flatter, if that makes sense. Easier on my wrists for rolls and just striking them, to me anyway.

Salicete - I agree about seeing the drums for the first time out of the box, nothing like it. Exactly why I included the pics of the boxes and the drums on the floor. I knew someone would appreciate those two pic's ... I'm glad I put them up there.

The cymbals, well I just went to about five stores in the Bay Area one day and played all the types and brands of cymbals I could locate. Turned out that these sounded pretty good to my newbie ear, so I went with them.

75sling - I love the sound of the kick. I left the pillow in there, but thinking of taking it out soon. The 16 x 16 sings. I'm thinking the kick will do the same, once I remove it.

The rest of you that commented on the finish, I'm glad you like it. I understand it is old fashioned style, with the new beautiful wood finishes available. But, I just had to go with red sparkle!

The snare? Well it was a no brainer, after getting some input from a couple of the guys here on the board. The Black Beauty sounds amazing and after playing it the last couple of days, I absolutely love it.

Animalbeats, I don't sell children ... among other things, I play poker!

Thanks again to all of you for the great and enthusiastic comments. I truly mean that. Joey

Disco - I will be taking the pillow out this wekeend. Right now, I'm only feathering anyway, so it really doesn't matter, particularly since I'm not playing with any other musicians. But, I do want to hear that kick go boom.

Joe - I purchased all of the gear you see for around $11,000 US ... e-kit, hardware, cymbals, LCD/DVD, accessories and drums. I picked up everything at around dealer cost, with the exception of the e-kit and the LCD/DVD, which I paid a bit under MAP for. Remove the LCD/DVD from the equation and I'm in about $9,700. I am comfortable with the price I paid for the entire setup. Joey

Joey,

So I 've been thinking about what you said being 52 & all.

I figured either....

A) you have tons of money, which is a possibilitie, because I myself could go Drop the coin and get my dream kit, I just am married with young children and could find myself divorced if I come home and say " honey.....I'm home, with my new $11000.00 drumset!"

B) Your to that point in your life where your kids are grown, you've done everthing possible for your wife there is to do, and she's like you deserve it " go for it".

C) Your single with no opposing forces to stop you.

or D) Your recently divorced and " DAMN you could'nt WAIT til' you were FREE to go out and ...GET THAT KIT!"

SO...just out of curiousity is it any of those four?

Why the wait?

Thanks again for the kind comments! I thought this thread was dead.

No new updated pic's, Latin G, as I haven't really made any significant additions. I don't have a camera at the house at the moment, but I will get one or two up in the near future.

I did purchase a 12" Wuhan splash and I love it. Cost $11 at Guitar Center. I'm mostly using it in fills between the ride and the HH. Not sure I need to replace it as it sounds really good to my ears. But I haven't played any of the higher end models, so what do I know.

Only significant change to the line-up is a 21" Istanbul Agop Mel Lewis. I have it sitting over, and a bit to the left of, the 10". I'm mostly using it with brushes for light jazz. I placed the K Con Hi Bell Thin Low over the 16" and use it for exercise when I need to stretch that right arm! Really, mostly using the Dry Ride as main ride ... that pie needs more attention. I don't feel too comfortable with my crash set up, which is as seen in the original pic's ... think I need to bring them into the center a bit, and maybe hang them upside down. Feels awkward when I hit the 18" on the left, anyway.

Driver, the 8" depth sounds really nice to me, and more experienced drummers who have sat at the kit have all raved about the sound. One thing I noticed jumping onto a set with a deeper and more traditional tom set-up is that mine are more responsive with a softer strike ... very quick to get a sound out of them. I was playing a calypso on a Pearl refernce which is an awesome sounding kit and I noticed that on the 10" and 12" depth of the Pearl, the sound was delayed a bit and took a more forceful hit to get the same sound. I'm not criticisng the kit, just stating what you all probably know ... when you play another kit, you do notice some differences.

On the other hand, the 10 x 10 and 12 x 12 were much louder. Both had basically the same heads, but different tuning, for sure. Maybe I am just used to playing that groove on my DW's. Not dissing the PEARL, just discussing the difference in depth. The Pearl was awesome and I think it is more highly regarded than the DW. But I'm not trading today!

I will say this, his Sabian HH's sounded fabulous, much more crisp than my K cons, and with the close, following a footsplash, the K cons may be a bit too soft, but not quite mushy, But close to mushy. Are you following this?

I'm using what I've come to learn is a basic five tom tuning set-up, thanks to Wavelength, who hooked me up. As he PM'd me ... " Perfect fifth between 16" and 14", perfect fourth between 14" and 12", major or minor third between 12" and 10", and finally, perfect fifth between 12" and 8". You'll end up with a root-fifth-octave-third-fifth melody on the toms, which is quite usable and melodic. Check out some Steve Smith videos for an example of this particular tuning."

I used the major between the 12" and 10, and I've tuned everything in C. I bought a $20 Korg tuner and it works perfectly. I used a piano before that, but the Korg works like a charm and I haven't been back and forth between the keyboard and the drums, since. I took a pic of the Istanbul while I had a camera, so here is the new sizzle. Thanks again, guys. Joey

Thanks for the compliments! The setup is so much fun and I'm having a blast. Can't stop the acquisition process, however.

I was having some people over to play this past weekend, so I stopped into GC, where they were having a 20% off sale. Bought a Pearl percussion table with mount and hooked it up to a stand ... a great addition for just under $30 USD. Also purchased an inexpensive PDP double braced drum throne for $25, together with a $25 adjustable ProLine piano bench. This way, I have a bit more appropriate seating for guest musicians.

Picked up New Breed (Chester), Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer (Chapin) and Progressive Steps to Syncopation (Reed) and now have many included on the DW suggested reading list, but not enough time to get to them all. I take them to bed to read before I sleep, just like a book! How weird are we, reading two bars at a time like it was a paragragh of a thriller? Getting some great ideas, but still working my way through the others. But building a drummer library is a good idea.

Finally, picked up a Vader $7 cup holder and a $8 stick holder. When and where does it stop? LOL
Thanks again. Joey

Ooh, Ooh, Ooh!

That is a very beautiful set, Joey! And one very sweet looking Black Beauty
snare you got (I'm a sucker for Ludwig...as if anyone on here couldn't tell). I'm
actually have a set of Slingerlands that are being re-wrapped with red sparkle. I
myself always wanted a set of red sparkle drums, so when I came across
the Slingerlands I now own, I knew that there was only one color to have them
done in. I should be seeing them very soon.

Anyways, congrats on the DW's and I'm glad you got what you've always wanted.

Thanks for the nice comments. More pic's on the way one of these days. Gonna purchase

Took the entire kit apart tonight, from memory locks to heads. First time since I've owned the kit. Dusted, vacuum, cleaned and wiped down every inch. Didn't strip the lugs off, as that seems like too much after only eight months. Too exhausted halfway through a retuning of every drum to finish. You young guys stay away from the beer and you won't have that problem. But looks good and is calling my name. What a blast. Thanks again. Joey

Thanks for the nice comments, JDrum14 and beefythe drummer.

JDrum, the six DW drums, which were all custom ordered and built to my exact spec's, cost just under $3,000 USD. Add in the Black Beauty, which I purchased for $372, and I have pro drums, a seven piece set, including the bass drum mounting hardware, for under $3500, all delivered to my door. Of course, the cymbals and other hardware are not included in these prices.

I am one of the members here who believe that Drum Workshop is not overpriced and moreover, proof that if you shop around, you can obtain very good deals on new equipment.

Thanks again for the compliments. Joey

Thanks, Dry Water and That Guy.

Dry Water, with initials DW, you need a set of these guys. I think four drums would cost you about USD $2,000-2,500 in a wrap. Call Stan the owner of Professional Drum Shop, in Los Angeles for actuals, I'm just guessing. www.prodrumshop.com/

Hold on to those DW's, they will age very well. Especially with those K Con's. You have an amazing kit Joey. I like how you did a Neil and have an accoustic and electric kit with it.

Thanks AnalogKid. Not sure what you mean about drums aging. I didn't realize shells get better over time, but if they do I'll be even that more satisfied with my purchase. Thanks again. Joey

If you keep them warm, don't change temperatures a lot, wood will age very well. Listen to older guitars, or a '68 Slingerland kit. They don't sound the same as they did when the first came out, but in most peoples opinions, they sound amazing!

Thanks for that info. As a matter of fact, lately I've been obsessing over a a vintage 60's Rogers, Slingerland or Gretsch. Not sure how to go about getting one without getting ripped off, but I am on it! Must be 12,14, 20 (maybe 18) and matching 14 snare. Original mint or near mint ... excellent will work ... White Marine Pearl, a sparkle, maybe the old Rogers pink swirl wrap... or a Gretsch green shiny swirl, and what about those psychedelic old Ludwigs? And that 14 x 4 Max Roach snare? Or maybe one of those ... STOP THE MADNESS. Obsessed I tell ya. Joey.

Thanks, jwdrums, I appreciate the kind words.

Slingerland 755, let me tell you that they are holding up very well. They are cleaned and dusted regularly and since I never take them out of the house, they are like mint condition. Truth is, although it is a pain, I still enjoy cleaning and shining every inch of the thing ... like they were brand new.

I play almost everyday when I'm home (but nothing like the test you younger rockers would put them through) and the heavy duty DW hardware has been bullet proof. I mean nothing has gone wrong. I still enjoy every sparkle of this kit and feel so lucky to sit and play it. I love these DW's and hope all of you have the opportunity to own a set that you are 100% completely satisfied with one day. I know many of you have that feeling now, but I also understand that many of you younger players do not. You save your money and after you have your school and other priorities down, you can get whatever you want.
And, of course, just because I'm satisfied with the kit, doesn't mean I don't want more stuff, because I do. I have four rides and want event more! I have the 14" K Con HH's and would like a firmer chick sound. Can you own too many cymbals? I want more sounds! Been playing accoustic since December 2006, and electric for just over a year ... this has turned into a fascinating hobby, opening up worlds of new music I never listened to before. Keeps the mind and body very active. Thanks again, guys. Joey

Hey Joey! Try the A-customs, and the Paiste signature power hats if you can. I think they have what you mean by a firmer chick sound.
I did have to think twice about exactly what you meant there for a minute; )

And since we're on the subject, if ever drummerworld was to have a beauty contest, like a Miss Drumset or something , my vote would definately go to your kit.

Good stuff. Similar to my current get up. I just got a new DW Champaign Gold (Born in Feb. of 2007) with a black beauty as well as a roland td-20. Currently working on turning part of my house into a recording studio...can't wait to get everything going.

And Thatoneguy, you gonna make us beg to see a couple pics of that new DW set of yours? Get 'em up here! Thanks again. Joey

Two words -- Sabian 13" AAX Fusion Hats. Wait...1.2.3.... 4 words, and some numbers!

They kick some serious ass, and they sound amazing as semi-open, closed, and as a 'chick' sound!

Thanks again for the nice comments! Joey

I was at this site when you first posted it but happened to be just looking at stuff again. And, I have to tell you, your drums (IMO) are some of the nicest drums anywhere.

Your electronic kit looks pretty nice too.

Hope you're having fun with them - and Merry Christmas while I'm at it here.

Thanks for the very nice comments Zazzy, Kona, Nimby. Still in love with the set and the hobby, though I suck.

I do like the bass mount, Burn. Try one out when you have a chance and let me know if you think there is any sacrifcice regarding the sound from the kick. Most guys use pillows and pinstripes and muffle the heck out of the things anyway. Sounds and looks great to me.

Thanks again.

Happy Holidays to all! Joey

Wow...man, that is one beastly awesomely amazing kit!

Nice E-Kit too.

Also, (I'm one to notice small things) why do you have your cowbell turned upside down?

joeybeats
12-28-2007, 07:46 AM
Thanks for the nice comments, DC435. LOL Amazed you noticed the cowbell.

The reason the bell is upside down is because I was greatly influenced by Steve Smith and his set-up when I put this kit together. I heard him say on his US Beats video (a great dvd to own, really melodic playing) that he obtained more sounds out of that bell when it was upside down, as the plastic trim only produces one sound. I tried it out both ways and he is absolutely correct. I guess these guys know what they are talking about. I use it in a few latin rythyms, cha cha, mozambique, and a few bad attempts at Bonham. Anyway, if you have one of these, check it out and see of you agree about getting more sounds out. Thanks again. Joey

hi, joey,

congrats to your nice setup ... and if you don't like your special dry ride anymore, i would take it. maybe in change with my cons medium?

happy new year,

Thanks, macmarcus. I love that 21" Special Dry Ride, the favorite of mine. What's wrong with a K Con medium? I played one last Saturday at a Guitar Center and it sounded fabulous. Joey

<oh, there's nothing wrong with the cons ... but my wife don't believe that her husband needs more than three rides. ;-)>

but a question i forgot:
why not a matching snare (a ten plus six or an edge, for example) with your set?

I had the Black Beauty when I placed the DW order. I didn't think it could get much better than that. Maybe I've made a mistake, who knows. The good news is I introduced a 60's 3 ply Slingerland into the lineup last week. Picture is up with the others of my kit. I am enjoying it. Joey
