Me and a few other musicians playing the song "Mercy Mercy." This was in the summer during a rock camp. We started doing this song on the 3rd out of 5 days so its not exactly perfect, but i think we all did a pretty good job.
It may get boring after a while, but i do have a small drum solo in the middle so thats fun.

Tell me what you think.

Are more drummers than just you on that? It sounds like it at times as if there are 2 drummers who are playing out of sync with each other on fills and with some of the bass parts. Whether there is or not, work on your timing a bit and make sure you are really solid. Try locking in with the bass player more as well.

Other than that not bad, I would prefer to hear just a nice groove played well than some of the more technical stuff you've posted before to be honest.

yeah i forgot to mention that, it is me and another guy who on drums.

and the bottom part of your post, was that a nice groove? or more technical stuff? or other...

edit- o yeah and the reason we seem to be out of sync alot is because we had only practiced it about 2 times each day before we had our concert, and we had not completley locked in, though we did enough to play a good show. (i mean a crowd always loves a drum solo, good or bad)

A nice groove. You probably know I'm not a huge fan of some of the Gadd stuff you posted, atleast not until you've got it down a bit better. So I'd rather hear a simple groove played well than something more technical played not so well.

Well I'd say though you did a pretty good job of locking in with him. For the first few minutes I thought it was just you playing.

thx alot. During the begining we were not that tight, but yeah, there were parts where we were perfectly in sync. It was cool because since the first time me and the other guy did the drumming together, for the solo, we automatically switeched off during the solo, we didnt have any trouble lockin in for that part or anything. The director guy told us we would both do a solo together, and i didnt really know what he meant by that, but i was really suprised it went to well during the rehersals and stuff.

Overall it sounds cool. Not bad...

but you should work a bit on this walking feeling. So, pull the band more. Don`t get faster but always try to pull...till now it`s a bit sleeping and so also the heavy played hi-hat seems not as good as it WOULD seem if you play with this pulling feeling. (sorry that I always repeat pulling :-D)

but overall it sounds...yes, good.

just keep it up!

nice grooves, but have u ever tried to put some beuford influence in your music?

for ex. play a 2 handed hi-hat, but not straight 32nd or 16th notes, just a few extra to get a better feel for the music, while playing regular beats on your snare.

i do this with my band and it puts a whole new level of feel onto our music, a refreshing change frmo the typical 4/4 time signature.

i would try this, but the fact that there were two drummers made it difficult to do anything to wild, such as cool ride/snare patterns, and stuff on the hi hat that you are talking about.

Because we only rehearsed the song a few times, we never learned the song quite well enough to through the fancy stuff around in the song, besides the solo :)

Edit- just added a couple words in.

Thx for the compliments Karl, but i dont really understand what you meant. I mean, i kinda do, but I kinda dont. Was i slowing down? was the timing not good? As you can see i have worked with a metranome some and the timing wasnt wild or anything, but i just dont really understand what you meant by "pull the band" "but dont get faster".

I figured it out :) . Not too bad, although some of the fills were off, but hell! its live and its fun so who gives? You might wanna practice with a metronome a little bit more because it seems as if your throwing off the guitarists a little bit. Overall, good job.

I actually meant that you have to drum in a feeling that is always walking. When playing Jazz it is the same, you have to play always in a feeling what is always pushing.
However, NOT faster than the actual tempo but pushing, more fluent.

I hope you can understand...

In music in general, the beat at a certain tempo does not just appear and then disappear instantaneously, they occupy some amount of time, meaning you can play on the front end of it on the back end of it or right on it. None of these are incorrect, there are several ways to play with a set tempo and still be in time. You just have to figure out which one you have to use for certain styles. Some require to be on the back end, some require to be in front of the beat. Thats what Karl is saying, he thinks you should be playing more in front of the beat, pulling the band.

Couldn't play it, some license message kept coming up even when I downloaded it. Just attach it to your post so all can listen.

I think I understand now, good explanation. Ive never really thought about that when playing, i just feel the beat and groove with it.

Tunderhill- I will try to find the url and post it up here.
