I was wondering what people think of this http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Pork-Pie-Acrylic-Snare-Drum-with-Black-Powder-Hardware?sku=447811 . Its acyrlic and I don't have much experience with them and i was wondering what people think of these drums. I assume it would be loud but wonder if it would be quieter since its not vented.

I have the 13x6.5 version of the Pig Lite -- amber acrylic. incredible snare. Very pleasant tone, monster rim shots, cross stick is clear and defined. All in all, it is a fantastic snare and i cannot think of one that would be better for the money.

I have owned the pork pie Little squealer. It was a great snare for the money. It was very, very loud. Th trouble was it had that old ring sound too it when hit of center. As for the snare you have spoke about. I don't think the lack of a hole will make much different due to how loud these snares play.

i've got the one you're looking at. Its super loud and has a huge crack when you hit it with rim shots. Isn't a very effective snare at low tunings, but mid to high rocks peoples faces off. I also own both the 13 and 12 inch little sqealers and the 13x6.5 Pig lite. I love them all very much. I like the pig lite the best as my main snare

i'm using that snare as my main snare right now. it's a very good snare for the money,
maybe the best out there right now as fat elvis said. it's easy to get a nice tone out of it...
i like mine tuned somewhere between medium to high (closer to medium) with a studio x
batter. it gives it a nice fat crack. i wouldn't worry about volume, it should have plenty cut
for whatever type of music you're playing. it's plenty bright and loud.

What kind of head do you guys think would be good for this snare. I usually use evans and have a st dry head on my snare now. But i was considering the emperor-x any other suggestions?

remo coated ambassador. Thats what Pork pie uses and recommends. They are ideal for these drums. I believe any more will take away from the natural fantastic sound.

One last question is the clear and black one that i am looking at different from the orange one. I know they're different sizes (13x7, 14x6) but the original price difference is different.

As far as I know, its the size, the lug style (tube on the amber) and the hardware (chrome instead of black on the amber). I dont know if there is any difference in the thickness of the acrylic or the angle of the bearing edges, but i sincerely doubt it.

What kind of side snare head do you have. Or what do they suggest.

Its a remo with the pork pie logo on it. It is most likely an Ambassador Snare or a UT.

So for your snare head on top you didnt buy anything new the head is an ambassador?
Fat Elvis

Yeah it comes with an ambassador on top. I left everything as-is when i bought it. When the head wears out, i will replace it with the same head. Sounds perfect to me.

i use it for rock. Its not that hot for recording because it resonates for a long time and it speaks with a lot of character. but for a live situation, you cant beat it.

I read the reviews (as I'm sure you did also) on the site and everyone was very satisfied with that snare. I haven't used an acrylic drum since the early 80's but as Fat Elvis stated, they are quite loud and the Ambassador is what I would recommend also for this drum. Now you've got me thinking about running down and checking one of these out myself. Shame on you!

-Don't listen to the other reviews. These guys must have a really bad ear for them to say this is one of the best sounding drums they ever played. If you are rock drummer this drum will apply to you most so listen. I got this snare for looks. I eventually progressed as a drummer and in doing so realized the sounds you get out of this drum blow. The range is terrible you can tune it all you want but the acrylic shell(while hot as hell) destroys the sound. Bottom line is acrylic shells do not have as good of a sound as maple or wood in general (definatly not maple). So if you have any musicianship what so ever. You will not get this drum(nothing against pork pie, there seats are orgasmic). If you want it for looks and very few different sounds go for it, it cracks well I guess. But be careful when buying acrylic drums. If you want a pork pie get a little squeeler especially if you play ska or want a side snare.-
This is a review from guitarcenter.com . I was wondering from all the people that feel good about pork pie acrylic snares how you respond. I'm really interested in buying one but don't really have time to try it out. I strictly play rock/alternative rock (blink 182, maybe some redhot chili peppers), but this guy really seems to be putting it down. I just want to make a decision i don't want to regret. So is this guy full of it?

its all in who you choose to believe. Im sure he likes wood better, but i personally do not care for wood snares -- no matter how much money you drop on them. To say that if you have any musicianship whatsoever you will not like this drum is moronic. I was a music major and studied guitar seriously for 15 years. Do i qualify as a musician? He is just a guy that has an opinion that he feels is right and sees no other side. Ive met pleanty of those people (a few used to be on this board). I look at is the acrylic shell is the sound i WANTED -- and no matter how i tuned a wood shell, i could not get that tone.
You can read my detailed reviews of my snare drum purchases -- i have no brand loyalty for snares and keep an open mind. This snare is what i wanted and i could not be happier. Let me put it to you this way, i have a gig kit and a studio kit. I want to get to the point where they share nothing -- which means i use 2 snares. Right now my gig kit is a chad smith, but i have actually thought about getting a second acrylic pork pie because i love it THAT much.
