I'm looking to retire my kit from the road and buy second-hand gigging kit. I found this ad in my area (see link below). I've always been partial to Ludwigs and these caught my eye. Any thoughts on these? I believe these are around 15 yrs. old. How was Ludwig's quality at that time? Any particular questions I should ask or things to look for? Thanks for your help!

BUY THEM NOW! That's a great price, I'm not sure how there quality control was 15 years ago, but you can't go wrong buying a Ludwig classic maple kit for $600.

Yea, that's a good price. I swear I've seen that set in these forums before.

Those appear to be from a period when Ludwig was still turning out thick shells and heavy hardware, which was not a particularly successful venture for them (or anyone else who had done the same.) The resulting tom sounds were often choked, or at best, not very warm. However, since they're on isolation mounts, that solves most of the resonance issues, and overall, that's a smokin deal for the kit!
If they end up being a '90s kit when they started a transition back to thinner shells, then all the better.
Either way, grab it!

I'm a Ludwig die hard and these drums your looking into are a great deal! Just give them a good look and make sure there is no wood separation. "Rhythm in the hands of few" Sirwill

Damn, I'm good. It's a shame that all you need is $600 to keep that set around - not trying to stop you from selling it though. Nice drums.

Thanks. Man you have a good eye! Yeah it sucks to let them go 'cause I know it is a set I will wish I had in 5 years or so, but you gotta do what you gotta do. I dig the new Mapex kit a lot though. Life is good!!
