Since getting back into drumming a year ago after many years away from a kit, I'm finally upgrading the Sabian XS20s a bought with my Mapex Pro M (some of the XS20 came with the kit free). The XS20s weren't that bad, just not good enough for my current needs. I've been in a band for 10 months. We've been hard at work on original material and we're ready to record our songs. I thought now would be a great time to upgrade.
I've read a lot of great reviews of Saluda cymbals and I've heard a number of performance sound clips. I've liked what I've read and heard. What made the decision even easier was Saludas ability to match a set of cymbals to my specific requirements, their trade-in program, and their satisfaction guarantee. They will adjust the characteristics of any cymbal I'm not happy with for free.
I'm trading in the following cymbals for the matched set of Saludas listed further below:
Sabian
XS20 20" Rock Ride
XS20 18" Rock Crash
XS20 18" China
XS20 16" Rock Crash
XS20 16 Med-Thin Crash
XS20 14" Med-Thin Crash
XS20 14" Rock Hats
XS20 10" Splash
XS20 10" Splash
Zildjian
Avedis 16" Medium Crash
Avedis 14" Hi hats
The Saladas I've ordered are:
1 - 22" Mist X Heavy Dry ride (loud crisp bell, dry, good stick definition on the bow)
1 - 13" Mist X rippled edge hats
1 - 14" Mist X rippled dark medium hats
1 - 15"-16" Mist X thin crash (bright, fast decay, glassy)
1 - 17"-18" Mist X medium crash (bright, moderate decay)
1 - 19"-20" Mist X dark rock crash (dark, moderate to long decay)
1 - 19" Diamond dark china (dark, fast decay)
1 - 16"-17" Diamond China (fast decay)
1 - 8" Mist X splash (glassy)
1 - 10" Diamond splash
The size of the cymbal where a range is specified will be determined in the matching process.
The price after trade-in is $289 (including shipping). Given the use I got out of the XS20s and the quality of what they are being replaced with, I think I'm getting a great deal.
I should have these within the next two weeks. I'll post pictures when they arrive. I can't wait!!!

I hope you enjoy your new Saludas as much as I like my new Masterwork Jazz Series. Should be a difference of night and day. Have fun.

Wow, so Saluda seems to be a very successful cymbal producer....I hope you`ll love em!
Do you know whtether there is also a typical "Jazz line" of Saluda?

Karl,
Their Diamond series is intentd for jazz. I'm including serveral from this series in my setup because of there darker tone.
A quote for their web site:
"The Diamond series is geared more for those who want darker, more expressive, very complex, darker, and jazzier sounds. However, if you like the look that much, we can make these in brighter versions."

OOhh that's a lot of new toys. :)
Only two weeks? I hope mine come within a couple weeks. That'd be great. I figured it would be a few. My trade ins have arrived there so we'll see when I'll have my new crashes. My kit is naked without crashes.

Jamie from Saluda told me that if he had my old cymbals by next Wednesday I'd have my new cymbals by the following Wednesday. As of Monday my kit will have NO cymbals until the new ones arrive. oouch!!

I had a great surprise waiting for me on my door step when I got home from work today. I big box from Saluda Cymbals was waiting for me. Only eight days after shipping my trade-ins my new set of Saludas is here.
I've only played them for about an hour. So far I am very pleased with the sound. Jamie did a great job matching the cymbals to my requirements. He did make a few substitutions to get a better matched set. Instead of a 22" Mist-X heavy, dry ride I received a beautiful Earthworks 22" heavy, dry ride. It matches my requirements perfectly. I also received a 8" Glory splash instead of the 8" Mist-X splash. It is bright and glassy, just as I ordered. The last substitution was one of the sets of hi-hats. Instead of the Mist-X 13" rippled bottom hats I received a mixed set consisting of a 14" heavy, dry Black Mist and a 14" medium Diamond. They sound great!
I'll provide more feedback on the sound after I have had more time to play these beauties. For now, as promised, here are some pictures I took as I un-boxed the set. Enjoy! I'll have pictures of the cymbals on my kit later in the week.

Ya, how do you like that Earthworks ride? What about those mixed hats? They look interesting. How do the two splashes compare to each other?

I love both. The Earthworks ride is beautiful looking and it has the exact sound I was looking for. See my earlier description. The Emperor splash is bright with a quick decay, but it is a little thicker than most splashes so it has more body or a fuller sound. The Emperor hat is very heavy at 1560 grams. I'm using it as a top hat with a Diamond medium hat on the bottom. It gives me a very bright, crisp stick sound and a nice loud click. It complements the lighter weight Mist-X hats which are less bright and somewhat washier sounding in comparison.

The Earthworks is just what I ordered. See my earlier description. I love it. The Emperor/Diamond hats sound awesome with the Emperor on top. Very bright, crisp sounding with great stick definition. With the Diamond on top they sound too much like the Mist-X hats. I like having the different sound options with the Emperor on top.
The Diamond and Emperor splashes are like night and day. See my earlier description of the Emperor. The Diamond is much thinner and darker sounding. It has a very fast decay and not as much body as the Emperor. I like both. They compliment each other well. I'm considering adding a 10" or 12" Emperor to give me a weightier more full bodied splash option.

So the Emperor/Diamond combo has more defined chick than the Mist-X, but less wash when open? I know I want my hats to really wash out when open. I want a cutting chick. Jamie said Mist-X would be great for that and I'm pretty set on getting the 15" Mist-X with ripple bottom. But the way you are describing that combo has me thinking (if nothing else for a second set of hats). When I have my hats closed I like them very tight to make a more defined tick. So is the Mist-X hats more chunky and the combo set more ticky? Am I hearing this right in my head?
I love my 16" Diamond crash now. It's bright and trashy with great sustain. I want to eventually add on a 14" or 15" of the same. I wanted to try to get my splashes from a line other than Diamond or Mist-X. Does your Emperor splash kind of sound like a tea cup and saucer breaking? Like a quick clang?
Since he substituted an Earthworks for a Mist-X for your dry ride, that makes me feel better about wanting to choose the Earthworks for the same purpose. I'm just not sure weather to go with heavy or medium dry. I was leaning on the heavy side.
I think I am about ready to shoot him off another email with a refinement on the sounds I'm looking for.

Based on your description of the a hi-hat sound you want, I'd stick with the Mist-X hats. Your interpretation of what my hats sound like is right on.
The Emperor splash does have a quick clang, something like a small bell, but not quite a bell sound. I have the heavy ride. There is very like wash. It has more ping.
Update: Based on Saludas recent cymbal line renaming, my Emperor 8" splash is now called Glory. It's a great splash no matter what it's called!
