Basix Rehearshal pics...nice...

So, here are just some rehearshal pics of today, I`ve set-up my Basix Short Stack at school for christmas concert...it will be huge fun for us as every year! :-)
A few things also changed, two things actually: "New" Evans G1 heads on toms and a Powertstroke 3 bass drum batter head AND yes, on my old Basix pics you can still see a 22" bass drum, just replaced that with a 20" bass drum.

the specs for this concert are:

Basix SHort Stack Custom drums
20" Bass
10" and 14" toms
14" Snare drum

Cymbals:
14" paiste 2000 Sound Edge Hi-hat (not mine)
16" Paiste 502 (not mine but will do its job for this gig well I think)
20" Paiste 505 Medium Ride (not mine but pretty cool)

and a Sabian AAX 16" Bright Crash (the only cymbal which is mine! =) ...oh, and a no name 8" splash is also mine and it sounds coool!

That's a hot lookin' kit Karl. Definitely diggin' the yellow vibe. Simon Phillips used to play a kit close to this color, I love it.

Well, a good drummer friend gave me this thing and yeah, I love it. It`s a bit harder to play than my Tama pedal but you can play also fast bass drum figures on it without problems...also this beater is really nice, maybe not everything on this pedal feels so light but this thing really gives me a good "heavy" feel I like. this wood side of the beater makes my kick so punchy...

I like it! It looks like a great little jazz kit, and the Colour is very nice! I also like the 10 lug bassdrum and the tom... :)

Actually I have to improve that because slowly the bass drum moves forward...

Anyway, it has a solid Jazz sound if it is tuned right. For now I`ve tuned my bass drum very very low so that it sounds very punchy and exact. I also put a pillow into the bass drum. The toms are tuned in mid-range, very tight and funky but cool for jazz...similar to Benny Greb`s tom sound. For now I feel very very good on this 4-piece version...just my better Ride cymbals and a jazzier tuning and I`d LOVE to play it on a jazz gig.

at the moment I`ve tuned it solid and very versatile...

PS: It`s a 100% birch kit...my favourite wood. mhh... =)

I've never heard of Basix before, but they look like they'd be easy and convenient to transport around for gigs. How do they sound? I'm guessing that the 10" tom is pretty high pitched, (like a Rototom maybe?) or can you tune it for more depth? I'm impressed by the lug mounting as well...

Yo Karl my man, check out Ritter Cases, i got a set for my 6 piece kit for 60$ and they get it done quite well.

BTW nice kit, im getting those heads after i get my 18" K dark crash.

Very cool!

Well, many people think that especially the rack toms (10" and 12") are tuned very high pitched like rotos but I can tell you that those things can be tuned so low pitched and fat! Never thought this but yeah, it`s possible. and this is also an advantage of those shallow toms: They can be tuned very fat and tight. This sounds cool and it`s good for gigs where you need a solid sound.
Maybe watch some Benny Greb video clips of Meinl Fest and listen to his rack tom. Mine sounds pretty similar to his.

About this Basix: Basix has improved very very much in the last years, they produce now better hardware, the kits sound better and look muuuch better. I think Bernard Purdie used to play Basix a time and Danny Gottlieb has his own signature Basix kit. They sound just huge for the money (I paid 550 bucks for mine). Great all-round kit and an eye-catcher. ;-)

Well, so today was the first christmas gig at school. and it was HUGE fun!! The second will be at church on the 21-12-2006, so in two days.
I loved to play on my Basix....oh yeah, that thing was worth the money!!

thanks for showcasing a basix kit by the way.. i've never heard much about them, but they look like cool kits. interesting yellow finish -- not my personal favorite, but looks pretty cool nonetheless. i know you're not necessarily a paiste fan.. so your reaction.. do you like paistes, or do you feel more at home with your Ks and Sabians?

Mhhh...well...what can I say about Paiste?
I`m not againt Paistes and I also don`t hate them but I just can`t find my sound when trying Paiste cymbals. It`s a thing you all and I can`t describe I think. you decribed it good with this "at home" feeling though.

When playing Sabian and Zildjian I can find more sounds I love and so I feel really warm.
But maybe one day I will fall in love with some Paistes, I havn`t tried all, yet. ;-)
