It is actually Pie-stee, from the Estonian, but many erroneously call it Paste-e, or worse.

From paiste.com

How do you pronounce "Paiste"?

The correct pronunciation for "Paiste" is "Pie-stee".

As Mario Calire of Ozomotli says, "it rhymes with feisty"!

lol love the explanation. Love the look of them. I have been waiting 3 months for my 2002 ride!!!

The only one i really like is the ride. The china and the splash are too bright for my cymbal tastes.

if anybody remembers, Paiste used to actually advertise with the slogan "pronounced 'pie-stee' " for a while.

if anyone has access to those ads feel free to post them.

so if the company advertised as calling them "pie-stee" then it's "pie-stee". end of discussion.

Thanks, dudes!

On my Web site, I have soundclips available for many of my cymbals. The soundclips get made last, because unfortunately, I am a much better cymbal photographer than player, so I put it off. Plus, my house is usually loud with boys and dogs.

How about this baby? One of the earliest Formula 602 Dark Rides...from 1975. Just got her a few days ago. Sounds incredible!

I only just found this thread - did a search on Stambul.

I can't post any pics until I clean them, but I have a swag of old Paistes. Breakdown is-
15" Formula602 sound edge hihats bought new by my dad in '69
20" Stambul '65 Ride from '69 too.
16" Signiture thin china
12" 3000 splash
18" Formula602 Ride (I think it is) black label (bought last few years)
14" Stambul '65 hihats, pretty damaged that I bought for $10. I use them for everything from trashy aux hats, to crashes and sometimes they get mounted on other cymbals.
18" 101 cymbal of some type my dad bought me.

And while on Paiste, my only other cymbal is an 18" A zildjian crash that my dad bought 2nd hand when he got the 602 hats and the Stambul ride. I don't know how old it is but the keyhole was already worn into it when he bought it, and it's a decent hole. Not trying to be a Paiste snob, but it's the only non-paiste cymbal I've heard that I liked as much. It just sounds different than other zildjians.

The old ones are looking pretty good. I'll polish them up before I take some pics.

No photos yet, but I've been a Paiste fan and player since 1989. In fact, I still have my 16" and 18" Signature Fast Crashes from 1990, and they're in fine condition!

Also use 13" Signature Heavy hi-hats, 15" Sig. Fast Crash, 21" Sig. Heavy Dry Ride, 16" Sig. Thin China, and 6", 8", 10" Sig. splashes. I love the Signature Series for all styles, save jazz. I'm desperately trying to see if I can warm up to the Traditionals or Dark Energies for jazz, but they just don't see to capture a nice, warm, dark, woody sound for jazz like a Bosphorus, Zildjian, or Istanbul can. But, I do think Paiste makes the best hi-hats p e r i o d: clear, bright, cutting sound with wonderful chick and sizzle. All you have to do is listen to Stewart Copeland's drumming to know that Paiste cymbals sing beautifully. Sabians and Zildjians simply cannot compare!

And my girlfriend just surprised me with the new Stewart Copeland Signature 22" Blue Bell Ride (on order):

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee26/clikchic/IMG0024web.jpg

18" Formula 602 Ride (I think). I crash it a lot, but I do think it's more a ride cymbal. I found this second hand and snapped it up. It has a dryer sound with much less decay than my other ride.

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee26/clikchic/IMG0026web.jpg

14" Stambul '65 HiHats. I bought these for $10, just to use as a trashy aux hihat. The top cymbal has some damage on the lip and 2 cracks at the hole. I'm using the bottom as a crash sometimes, and I really like it for that. Some gig's I use just it and the 12" splash as my crash cymbals. I have an 18" 101 my dad found. It's not pictured and I generally only use it when mounting the top 14" hh directly on it for something really trashy sounding.

The last is a 16" Signiture China High. I luuuuuuuuuuuuuuv this cymbal. And as you can see from the pic I use it the wrong way up; or is it the right way up??? I ride on it a lot and the crash sound decays longer this way.

Anyway, that's my lot. Thanks for listening ;) :)

Sweet looking pies TCT2! I really love your chinas, Paiste's chinas always sound great, and I love their low-profile design.
