i have a standard 16" floor tom with legs. i was looking at buying one of these tom stands (http://www.sticksnstringsnthings.com/acatalog/Hardware_Accessories.html) and just sliding the arm on the clamp into the slot instead of the floor tom leg. has anyone done this before, i need more room and it should work but anyone got any reasons why not?

Yes it would work.

I do that with 1 of my mounted toms, but you have to be sure whatever it is you're clamping your tom to is balanced enough to support it, especially a rather big tom like a 16".

right, im going to clamp it onto a cymbal stand so the balance might be a bit tricky, i may just leave it and deal with no room. thanks

The other thing you can do if your tom is too big to balance off a cymbal stand is set it on a snare stand...the trade off for having a tom on a snare stand is you may have the drum right where you want it but the shell resonation is going to be reduced quite a bit by the stand.

For good balance, make sure that the tom is over one the stand's legs.

If I could make a suggestion, and this will sound entirely whacked, the floor tom has three leg holders, and on most toms they are more toward the bottom of the tom. I would suggest reversing the heads, thus putting the leg holders more toward the top half of the drum and therefore changing the center of gravity, and masking it easier to balance. Look at your floor tom and try to visualize this before doing the head switch and see if it makes sense. Just a thought.

Uh, yeah, and this kind of goes with my philosophy of not trying to throw hardware at situation until you have exhausted all other avenues!

well first off. Why?

and if it's a matter of resonance, do what mapex did with their orions and put suspension mounts on you toms and have the legs go through it.
