I'm having a hard time choosing crash cymbals. I need some bright crashes that cut through loud rock music, but are still versatile for other styles. I also need cymbals heavy enough for a hard rock gig, but I'm not a very hard hitter, so too heavy would be... well, too heavy. I'm thinking of medium crashes. Sabian AA or Zildjian Avedis. Or perhaps Paiste 2002, although they are a bit expencive. Am I on the right track? Or should I consider something else? I know there has been hundreds of post like this, but I'm having a really hard time. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

i would suggest to try a few, i like sabian HHX heavier lines i.e the HHXplosions but if they are two expensive then Zildjian A customs are fantastic, try the normal A custom ,then the Projection and even the Medium and see what you like, i do like the 2002 and used to use them but i had probs with niggly little dents on the edge of the cymbals, i am not a power hitter but i do tend to play a little hard at times...i would say A customs, avedis or if you have a bit of money than hhx and Paiste signatures are the daddys.... hope this helped..

What is your price range?
for the hard rock-yet versitile crash, i would definately have to reccomend Zildjian A Customs (i like the fast crashes) or Sabian HHX Evolution crashes. very crisp, clean and full sound, cuts through nicely. these are personal opinions, but maybe some more specifics on what you want would give me a better idea..

I was kind of thinking of the Medium range myself. The Sabian AA line or the A Zildjian line would be good. I dont' know if the A Custom is going to be what you want, the A Custom Projection Crash might be. 18", 19" or even a 20" might be good! One of the issues which you need to keep in mind is that you can always play a bigger/heavier cymbal with a lighter touch. Thinner, smaller cymbals will reach a point where they can only get so loud before you start to break them.

I'll have to break the mold, and say for that true bright sound, go for a bronze8 composite alloy.

In particular, the Meinl Amun series, for which you could probably buy two crashes for the pric eof one of the big three, i play a bit of metal and am yet to see any damage to my 16 inch medium crash.

Or, if you have a bit mroe dosh,. go for the Paiste 2002. Same alloy, same machine hammering. Look at the meinl site for some sound clips, i really do recommend them for their awesome prices.

Those Meinl Amuns are not a bad idea. They sound good (at least the samples from the internet) and they are not expencive. I tried AAXposions and HHXplosions yesterday and they sound great! I think AAXplosions will do for me, since HHX are a bit expencive. Or maybe AAX Stage, a little heavier... I'll figure it out eventually. Thanks a lot for your help!

I don`t know how Sabian HHXplosion crashes would be for this music and how do you like it...so I`ll recommend something I know well: Sabian AAX.
Very very good crashes, I`ve got the bright crash and well, it has VOLUME. It can be played also in some Jazz or Funk maybe but the greatest is actually this sound character: SOFT in sound, has so much power and volume but sound also kinda dark. Hey, seriously, check them out, goood crashes! I`ll play it on christmas concert mainly with mallets and brushes and I`m looking forward to it...sounds REALLY incredible with mallets! ;-)

A Customs baby! The next cymbal I buy will definitely be another A Custom.
