Hey guys and gals,
Here's a clip from the opening tune from an album I'm working on for some endorsements as well as collaborating with friends. That there layin' down those bass tracks is Pennal Johnson himself. Get ready because you'll be hearing a lot of him in the future. ENJOY!!

Nice grooving going on there, I really enjoyed it. The bass playing was tremendous.

By the way, what snare was that? It sounded great.

Great playing really loved it. I was waiting for the gong tom, but you didn't hit it, at least not during the time the camera was behind you.
Great sound too.

Nice playing, the hand foot combos are smooth, and of course the kit sounds sweet! Just one question, is there a melody that will be put over later or was that the final product?

Hey thanks for listening man.
Yea, it's almost going to be a melody within a melody--if that makes any sense. The submelody is the groove that sets in right around 48 seconds. Overtop of this will be an improvised, real mellow female vocal that will center around that theme. Should sound pretty chill.

Yeah, man that was great, just my kind of stuff! I thought your fills were very nice and I really enjoyed the bass playing. That would be so sweet to play with somebody that funky and talented. Keep it up man.

Have a quick question for you-and I'm asking this with a ton of respect for your playing.

Why did you throw in all the double bass stuff at the end of the track? For most of the song you are laying back, throwing in some tasty little fills here and there, etc... and then at the end it feels like you start throwing in "a bunch of chops-kind of stuff".

To my ears, it sounds a little over the top for that kind of track. (I usually play swing as well as pop/rock, so perhaps this genre of music calls for that kind of playing a bit more?) It almost seemed like the song needed a more laid back groove at the end with some tasty bits thrown in for flavour. Thoughts?

I'm not slamming the playing at all. You obviously have developed some very tasty chops, to which you deserve huge kudos. Nor am I saying I could have done better, I'm just trying to figure out why you did some of the things you did.

Really liked the ride sound by the way. (Nice delicate playing with it.)

Hey man,
Thanks so much for checking my stuff out. I'm really glad some people are enjoying the chill, kindof weather channel groove.
You asked about all the licks and fills towards the end of the tune. What actually seems like the end of the tune is really the middle--the clip I put up on youtube is just a sample/preview, and the tracking isn't completely done at that. That's where my solo portion starts, and it's somewhat extended. The song is really a contemporary jazz/fusion peice, but it's also somewhat progressive in nature as well. I wanted to convey this throughout the drum solo in the middle. Then out of that it breaks right back into the bridge/pre-melody and ends in the same manner it started. In due time my friend there will be a video of the full tune. I just wanted to get some response from the preview. Thanks again for listening!

I can see where Chunk would be asking this about lettin loose at the end and in most cases I think he'd be right but I thought it fit this tune and groove perfectly... very cool...
as far as the gong drum mentioned in an earlier post.. I thought I saw you hit it in a pretty cool fill with the snare... The thing that caught my eye was the pretty interesting set-up...is that like an 8 or 10 inch tom in place of the floor tom?... that's awesome.. whatever makes you comfortable is the way to do it man.
Excellent vid man!

Seth-
That makes a ton more sense. I kept thinking to myself, why is he going off at the end of this mellow track? Now that I know it is the middle section where you solo, I completely get it. Thanks for explaining that. Oh and by the way, even though I have been playing for over 20 years, I ripped off a little fill I saw you do in that video! (right around 3:00) Hope you don't mind, but it was too damn tasty to pass up!!

Thanks again!
