View Full Version : Gretsch Catalina Club!
Hey everyone, earlier today I picked up a brand-new Gretsch Catalina Club!
I've always wanted a cool bebop/gigging kit, but with recent developments in my music life, I've found myself needing a small, easily transportable kit. I had some money saved away, so this kit, being as well reviewed as it is seemed to be a great option.
My other kit is a big 6 piece Pearl that has a sound not quite cut out for the club jazz setting, and is a real pain to lug around, so this is definitely a great buy!
Here are the pics, it's in a classic white marine pearl.

Also a new addition to my drum collection is a 20" Sabian AA Raw Ride. It's an awesome cymbal!

Thanks for looking!

Nice kit... that looks like a lot of fun to play on.
Can you post the sizes of the drums?
Well right now it's:
20" Sabian AA Raw Ride
16" Sabian Pro Sonix Crash (Soon to be replaced with an 18" Zildjian Oriental Crash of DOOM, or a Paiste Signature Mellow Crash)
14" Sabian Pro Sonix Hats (Soon to be replaced with some better hats, I'm thinking HHX Stage Hats, or the HHX Evo Hats)
As for the drum sizes:
12x8 Rack tom
14x5 Snare
14x14 Floor Tom
18x14 Kick
It really sounds great, and I haven't even had much time to sit down and tune it properly.

Excellent man! It's a really great kit.
I see you're a fan of ?uestlove, as am I. I'm going to morph this kit into a variant of his setup over time. Right now I'm focusing on cymbals, but I'll also get a nice piccolo snare and a different batter kick head to give it that nice hip hop punch. It's cool to see someone else who admires his playing as well (I hope I'm not reading into your avatar too much).

That looks like that little kit that you warm up like a cup of hot chocolate after a great day of skiing the hills.
LOL, yea ive always tried to get into jazz drumming, but i never have and still really want to learn.
Anyway cool set, how does that ride sound?

yeah, cool man. no you're not reading into my avataar too much. i really am a big questlove fan. yeah, you should really get some nice cymbals now that you have this nice kit.
Yeah I definitely plan to get a large array of nice cymbals. I'd like to have some sweet jazzy ones for this kit, and then some nice versatile ones for the Pearl.
The AA Raw Ride is an awesome cymbal. I'm surprised at how many people are unaware of this cymbal's great sound.

Hey man, nice kit!
Catalina's are hot as...they're so old school. It's just screaming "class" :P
Gretsch forever man :D

I got a really great deal on the Ride from my local drum store. The prices there are waay under the reccomended list prices (as they should be), but since I'm a frequent customer, and since I traded in my old ride (Sabian Pro Sonix), I ended up getting it for just under $160. Pretty great deal if you ask me, especially for how good the cymbal sounds.

Man, this is the next kit I wanted, in the same colour. I know its a bit of a random question, but how does that snare drum sound?
