[I apologize if maybe this should be in the "Drummers" section...]
Currently I'm looking to upgrade my snare. Danny Carey is probably my biggest influence, and I'm curious on how he gets the snare sound he does. I've been told a lot of different things; mostly that he just plays a (Sonor?) snare with the snares off/down. If anyone knows if this is true or not, or what is true, and a possible lower-budget way to obtain his type of sound, advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, Danny Carey does use Sonor drums and does play with his snares on OR off, and does loads of other mad stuff too!
His snare is a 14" x 8" Spirit Of Ocheltree snare. as you probably know, Jeff Ocheltree was John Bonham's drum tech and I think he works with Danny Carey too, hence the snare.

Ya he plays a 14"x 8" and It sounds like he cranks it really really tight. I dunno if he currently plays the Paiste Ocheltree model though because he doesn't play the matching set right now, he plays that Sonor kit with the exotic finish. I've heard he plays Brady snares sometimes but I could be wrong, maybe he still plays the Spirit of 2oo2, which I'm pretty sure they don't make anymore, and if you did find a used one with that depth and diameter it would probably cost thousands.

well i dont exactly have thousands to spend on a snare >.< but i guess my question is if anyone knows a good way to achieve his sound for less money?

he uses a bronze snare if he doesnt have his custom stuff ... so id suggest that depth for a bronze snare ... i personally think thats the best way.

He does use Brady snares but whether it's exclusively I have no idea.

I agree I would say the best way to get his sound would be to get a 14"x 8" and tune it quite high for that loud pop. He plays snares off quite a bit, but his heads are tuned high enough that sometimes it doesn't sound all that different.

Who on earth are Cerbal Defect?
I too intend to go for a deep bronze snare next year, but I'm going to go custom - I'm hoping to go custom, depending on how the results of my aluminium snare turn out. As far as I know Danny is still using the spirit of 2002 snare - I have an article from Drummer Magazine here in the UK from a couple of months ago saying so anyway. I would suggest a couple of things mind, rather than trying to replicate his sound, look for your own, but there's no reason why you shouldn't use similar equipment to get something similar to his sound ; ) the other thing being that the Spirit of 2002, as has been mentioned above, will cost you a small fortune to buy used, so I would look into either custom bronze or the Sonor Artist Series snare - the only problem with the Sonor Artist is it only comes in 14 x 6" and not 14 x 8" - this is the reason I will be going custom. Another reason is so that I can spec a thicker shell so I can (hopefully) use and Evans marching head (made from aramid fiber) on the shell.
If you want any further info please PM me, as I said I have an article/ interview with DC from Drummer Magazine from a couple of months ago which has all the info on his kit and ancillaries.
Cheers

If you still can get the TAMA PBZ380 which consist of a 14x8 bronze shell snare which still can be found for under 400$usd. This snare fine tuned can emulate the sound of D.C. snare.
You can also look for brass snare, it will give you basically the same sound.
