I was privileged to see Keith playing with Steely Dan and with Sting. His technique and musicality are both outstanding. he was truly inspiring at the Steely Dan show.

The man is a beast. I love his technique. I don't know how he does it. He defintely stands out from a lot of drummers. Check these videos out if you haven't already.

keith's playing all tracks on steely dan's last album 'everything must go'. if i'm not mistaken, i think he's the first drummer to play all tracks on a dan album. he also did some tracks on '2 against nature'.

i saw keith with sting earlier this year and he was mindblowing.
he's also on some of wayne krantz's records and they're really worth checking out.... 'greenwich mean time' is pretty awesome.

Hi this is my first post on the forum. I just got back from vacation to Israel and NYC. While i was in NYC, i went to the 55 Bar to see Wayne Krantz play. That night it was Wayne Krantz, Keith Carlock, and Anthony Jackson. It was by far the best set ive heard them play yet. I got to talk with Keith for a while and i learned that he and i share the same first name, Brian. So his real name is Brian Carlock. I was very surprised to learn that he plays the same bass pedal as i, a dw 9000. Anyway, it was the best set ive heard from Wayne yet so if any of you are fans, i would reccomend buying the June 30th set as it is only $5. Here are some pictures

I've listen to them - they are great. Keith's tecnique i amazing. It seems that he is left-handed - all those ghost notes on the snare drum. There are some really good shots of him playing at his website www.keithcarlock.com. His style reminds much of Bonham - they are both very powerful and have very open resonant drum sound. You should also check out Ari Hoenig - he is even more mind blowing.

Carlock is a groove MOSTER. He can lay down such a heavy groove and he's got plenty of chops. He's on his way to building an even more impressive resume' than he already has.

I saw him at a clinic this past week. What a fine, fine player. His clinic chops have also come a long way since his North Texas days. He seems much more relaxed with the drummer crowd.

SusanCarter
11-15-2005, 06:13 AM
Hey, Keith isn't trying to replace anyone, in fact, Gadd is one of his favorites too...of course, I like Keltner and Gordon. Keith has a style of his own...like all the greats before him. Katy Lied is my favorite..;) Isn't that Jeff P.?

Paul Quin

I saw Keith at the Orlando clinic and found him to be thoroughly inspiring. I talked with Billy Ashbaugh afterwards and he said the same thing. Keith has great musicality and great technique. He has a very fluid way of playing and his ability to relax his grip and open his playing leaves room for some truly great grooves and chops.

His question and answer session revealed a humility and sense of humor which only those who are really confident in their ability can project. he is a great player and he deserves the respect due to someone who has landed the types of gigs he has. In truth, I hate meeting the "artist" at events like this because the room for conversation is so stilted - "uh . . . that was great" seems to be the best thing to say but seems so passe. But that is probably just me. Ddespite the subjective awkwardness, Keith came across as a nice, genuine guy, in love with his art, approachable yet infinitely talented.

The guy's got it goin' on. Great groove, touch and feel. Not to mention enough chops to keep anyone happy. I don't see how see how he can play with his drums tilted like that though. Not for me. But hey, different strokes for different folks. A great young drummer.

I always really like how his playing is just a little behind the beat. Gives the music a cool groove. Kinda like Gadd in that way. His groove playing, anyways.

I had the pleasure to see him live with The Blues Brothers in Montreux about 5 years ago. I remember thinking that the band was not very hot and kind of a disappointment to me but that the drummer was really hot. And it seems I was right. Keith really held the band together and saved it on what might have been a night off for TBB. He was so much into the music and grooved like crazy.

For whatever reasons I seem to not be that much into NY drummers with the exception of Gadd, Billy Ward, Chris Parker, Anton Fig and now Keith Carlock.

Keith has the potential to become one of the greats.

Did Keith record the song "Josie" off of the album Aja with Steely Dan?

Hehe, Keith was probably five years old when that song was recorded!!!

That was Steve Gadd on the original recording, and if you've heard the live version, then that is Dennis Chambers.

Seems like a pretty decent lineup of drummers, especially when you throw in Jeff Porcaro and Bernhard Purdie.

I'm pretty sure that's not Gadd on the original. From memory (before my CD collection got stolen) that's maybe Jim Keltner? I know it's Purdie on Home At Last and Gadd on Aja... but I'm almost certain it's not Gadd on Josie.

Or I could just be making a fool of myself.

Edit: Or Rick Marotta. I'm leaning that way now, but I'd really have to check.

I can only repeat whats already been said. Very unique, different, and very musical. I watched his videos and found myself moving in my chair the way he was. It is different than what is grabing drummers attention nowadays. SINGLE pedal not a thousand miles an hour and just fun to watch and hear.

So it's Jim Keltner, eh?

Well the reason I asked this, is because I'm VERY impressed with the drumming in Josie. In this song, I love how he sits behind the band and simply grooves with FINESSE, yet still shows how technically sound he is by just adding in those subtle things. For instance, he uses ghost notes..or accents on the hats in appropriate places in the song. He doesn't overplay. Impressive, I tell you! He does the job of keeping the song going...and yet still lets the song breathe. VERY SOLID DRUMMING! I love this aspect. Jim Keltner is a big influence of mine now haha... And I know that you guys have an appreciation for this kind of drumming too.

Thanks for saving me the time of looking it up :p... Can you guys tell me of any other drummers or songs that have this same kind of drumming?

Yeah, I love Keith's playing. I was fortunate enough to attend a clinic he did a few months ago. He is a really down to earth guy who really hits very hard! I told my buddy he reminded me of a cross between Stewart Copeland and John Bohnam when he plays (visually). The clinic was more like a hang than a clinic and it was really a lot of fun. I'm going to see him playing with Steely Dan in August... can't wait!

Hi again -

I just checked and there is, as was mentioned above, an 'Ask A Pro' item in the upcoming Modern Drummer. There will be an update piece/interview with Keith, which I guess is in the August or September issue... it'll talk about his work and the 14-minute solo video on his site which has been downloaded over 250,000 times so far....

Also just heard that Keith has been named "Runner Up" in the Modern Drummers 2006 Readers Poll "All Around" category... right behind Vinnie!!

Hi Everyone -

Just a quick update on Keith Carlock & his website's gear giveaway...

He is about to go out on tour with Steely Dan (w/Michael McDonald), and was voted #2 Best All-Around in Modern Drummers Readers Poll... not too shabby!

The giveaway on his website is getting a lot of attention (thanks Bernhard for featuring it on the front of the site!) -

http://www.keithcarlock.com/giveaway2006.htm

We've just added ten copies of the Modern Drummer Fest 2005 DVD to the prize collection...

There are interviews in various magazines inluding a cover story in Japan's RHYTHM & DRUMS, which contains 10+ pages of interviews, commentary, transcription and photos.

France's BATTEUR Magazine also ran a cover story on Keith. BATTEUR includes a bonus audio and video CD of Keith's 14-minute drum solo from the Toronto Drum Festival, which you can view on Keith's website's video page.

This month's DRUMMER (UK ) has a feature interview with Keith, "Mississippi To Manhattan," which discusses Keith's beginnings, his recording and touring with Sting, Steely Dan, Donald Fagen, Wayne Krantz, Leni Stern and Oz Noy.

Also in print is last month's Modern Drummer with a feature on Donald Fagen commenting on thirty years of Steely Dan drummers. This month's issue has an "Ask the Pro" feature, and next month's issue will include an Artist Update piece with Keith.

In the coming months, Keith will be interviewed in the following publications:
- Rhythm Magazine (UK)
- Recording Magazine (USA)
- Bateristas Al Sur (Argentina)
- Traps Magazine (USA) [September's inaugural issue of a new drum magazine from the folks at DRUM!]

Anyway, thanks for reading and for the interest!

I am surprised more people haven't commented on the SD tour. I guess that is a function of the average age of the forum posters and that SD mostly appeal to older folks/musicians/stoners and audiophiles! There was another thread (somewhere), which lasted about a day, abut the tour but really not very much comment>

The only reason I am surprised is that Keith's playing was phenomenal. It was all him and his pocket was so deep he was wallowing in the lint. His solos's were fantastic - never losing the groove - while consistently playing over the bar line. He has clearly become a favorite of Walt and Don and they indulge him more than any drummer I have seen play with SD.

So, if you saw the tour - am I wrong?

First of all, my favorite drummer was, is, and probably always will be, Tony Williams. A couple weeks ago I was talking to one of my drummer buddies and mentioned how much I admired Keith Carlock. He said he did not care for Keith. I was totally blown away. How could you NOT like Keith Carlock's playing. Great technique, excellent musicality, stupendous dynamics, etc. etc. etc. on and on. Even though I am a drummer, I often get bored with drum solos. However, when viewing Keith's Toronto 15 minute solo I was never bored. Instead, I was totally captivated. No doubt, Keith is one of my favorite "new" drummers. I also am quite fond of Staton Moore.

I watched Keith play at the Big Bang festival in Enschede, the Netherlands. I also watched the videoshere on drummerworld and compared to that, I havent heard much new stuff, he played pretty much the same as on those videos. It was awesome though, he was working together with 4 other drummers, Glen Velez was one of them. They made some awesome music there!

As many of you know Keith is off on tour with Steely Dan right now and is travelling across the US and into Europe and then Japan and Australia. For thos of you who have never seen the Dan or Keith - GO!

I saw SD in Clearwater, Florida last night. As usual it was a lesson in musical perfection, restraint, taste and talent. During the song Aja, Keith built up to the first solo , just got into it and dropped a stick! While it put him off some of the chops he was intending to perform, he played through it with consummate skill and there was never a hint of lost time or any awkwardness. A wry smile crossed his lips and he went back into the verse. I felt sorry for him because Aja is clearly his big moment - but he made up for it on the second solo of the song where he appeared to pull out an extra trick or two to make up for the first.

On the whole, it just made me like him more.

Saw Steely Dan last night. KC may have an unusual set up and a strange right hand but can he ever play!! A fantastic performer who clearly got the recognition from the crowd that he deserved with the biggest response from the audience when Walter Becker introduced the superb band.

its rick marotta on josie! His drums + an overdubbed trash can lid for the buzzy snare hit.

I too was raised on 'royal scam & aja' and was a big fan of purdie, marotta, keltner- the 'deep pocket guys'.
Carlock seems to be a modern version of these players, who never subverts the groove at the expense of a 'monster, over-the-bar, lighting bolt, inverted fill, or self-indulgent sub-divisions.
The fact that they are there, if you listen carefully, is even more amazing.

This summer, I had the incredible pleasure of seeing SD n Carlock live in NYC at the beacon theater, a 15 year old chilhood dream come true.

As for Carlock, not a note was too much, or too little, or too anything!

Its nice that todays drum frontiers are being led not only by the chop- miestersPortnoys, Adlers, Colauitas, and Weckls of the world..., but also by the pocket kings, Carlock, Gavin Harrison, Bennny Grebb, Rodney Holmes etc.

Paul - You are correct. Boy, I sure wish SD would get around to my neck of the woods. Keith Carlock is my favorite present day player and I totally love every facet of his drumming!

Having been lucky enough to see him with SD a couple of weeks ago I will be seeing him again in another couple along with Omar Hakim at Drumfest in Northampton. Should be great.

First thing is first: Steely Dan is the greatest rock/jazz/commerical whatever band to have ever existed.

Second- Keith Carlock sure is an awesome drummer.

My only complaint about him is that he's a little too repetitive to me. I appreciate the emphasis on pocket/groove/touch/ and taste, but when it comes to soloing, after you've heard him a couple times, it's the same thing everytime. You know what I mean? It seems like he just has two ideas:the 2ndline/funk grooves and that double strokes/kick fill. And he'll pull that out be it jazz or rock.

Thoughts?

I agree with that actually, I saw him live once and it was great, but he did the same thing he always seems to do. He's still on my favourite drummers list though.

A couple of pics from a clinic in Northampton last night. KC is just an awesome drummer with huge amounts of passion and skill. He played an improvised solo, a piece from his Rudder album and fabulous piece with a backing track of some Oz Noy guitar. I could watch him all day long.

Wish I could get into the head of KC. It's so refreshing to hear a guy who has a fresh approach to playing music. He's like a really good chess player...

Keith will be taking over the drum throne from Steve Gadd and joining James Taylor on his West Coast tour. This will be the third major artist that Keith has toured with and each one is renowned for having incredible drummers. Steely Dan's touring drummers are well known and include Dennis Chambers, Pete Erskine, Ricky Lawson and Jeff Porcaro. Sting's past touring drummers include Omar Hakim, Vinnie and Josh Freese. James Taylor has toured with Gadd, Carlos Vega, Steve Jordan and Russ Kunkel.

This is a great testament to Keith. Can anyone else think of any drummer who has hit such heights so relatively early in their career.

I had to resurrect this thread from page four!! I noticed that Steely Dan is playing a brief US tour starting in June but I have not seen any indication regarding whether or not the usual Steely Dan suspects are playing with Don and Walt. Has anyone seen anything? Keith's website has not been updated for a while and there is no information indicating one way or the other whether or not he is touring with the Dan. Any information would be much appreciated.

It is a cliché in arts and performing to say that people just "have it"... but this is the thing, Keith just HAS IT... he's one of those guys like the excellent drummers mentioned that just brought a certain style, a sound, an aesthetic that was different... when people see him play, you just LISTEN and WATCH.

That's star quality.

His playing is phenomenal, his style original... and he is putting together an awesome resumé... his versatility and sound came seemingly all of a sudden to show everyone that intelligent, professional session drumming IS NOT DYING... is alive and well... he along many other guys are the PRESENT and the future of drumming.

....and his time.. its scary good. Its metronomic but with enough looseness to find the phatness of a groove and sit in it...like a pig in mud!

I saw Keith play with Steely Dan in Perth, Western Australia. It was their first gig on Oz soil. Man, the band is a class act and Keith really stood out and a musician of impeccable feel, technique and talent. Seeing him play was inspirational.

I'd love to see a concert with a rotating line-up of Dan drummers. Keltner, Gadd, Marotta, Chambers, Erskine, Purdie, Lawson, Carlock etc. How awesome would that be?

In answer to my own question above - and if anyone else is interested - while Keith's website and the Dan's website remains quiet on who will be playing with the Dan on its upcoming tour, the most recent Modern Drummer indicates that Keith will indeed be joining Don and Walt for the festivities.

If you have not seen the Dan play I strongly recommend going. It is the tightest musical perfomance you will ever see!

Ah...

He played Melbourne tonight with Wayne Krantz and Tal Wilkenfeld. Just a brief rundown on the gig...

It was ridiculous! I took some friends with me. None of us had ever heard any of these guys before, and we were all glued on Keith all night long. 30 seconds into the first song he was sweating up a storm, and he completely committed to everything he played.

He also played LOUD. It was at Bennetts Lane (medium to small sized Jazz venue) and they had the drums miced for some reason. I was 10 meters away and it felt like he had just walked off a stadium tour to play this show. It was crazy but powerful.

Tal (bassist, looks like she's 15) had sound problems the first half of the set, so it ended up being a duet between Wayne and Keith. They both rose to the occasion and destroyed it.

I managed to record some of the set, so I'll post it here, it's only audio but it's worth it. If this is against any rules, I'll take it down. I've got 4 clips, each about 8 minutes, I'll post more if anyone wants it.

Slight crackle in first 10 seconds, then it clears up I promise.

Also... Does anyone have any clue what snares Keith is using? I didn't get a close look, but his main was a metal piccolo type thing, maybe brass, his website says he uses a 3.5" by 14"?

He also had an auxiliary, wood hoops, fairly deep, maybe 6" or even deeper, in fact, most likely fairly deeper.

Just randomly, I searched google for pictures of Keith Carlock and came across this...

It appears his piccolo snare that I queried (in my previous post) is this one:

Yamaha SD 493 Brass Piccolo
(see link below)
http://www.vittoriopetrina.altervista.org/yamaha_sd_493/yamaha_sd_493_piccolo_brass_snare_drum.htm

And it looks like this:
