View Full Version : Cymbal identification

Well, it would seem that Christmas came early this year. A little background first, my dad was very much involved in music. He had a Ludwig kit that was around since I was born (I am 17, almost 18). He passed away around 8th grade, and I sold the Ludwig kit. I thought that I no longer had an interest in drumming. I had taken lessons before, but I had no one to play with. Well my friends started a band, so I asked for a Sonor 3005, in the same finish as the Ludwig kit, for my birthday. A set of XS20 rock cymbals came with it free. I was looking in a closet where I keep the musical instruments that my dad bought. This is the closet where he stored his stuff too. I moved a steel guitar case and I found a china cymbal. This has been sitting there for, at my best guess, 14 or 15 years. I don't remember ever seeing it on the drum kit that my dad had, however he has never bought a cymbal from the time that I can remember. It has a Zildjian stamp on it, and is now on an old high hat stand that I had because I had no extra cymbal stands.

Any help you could provide in identifying this cymbal would be appreciated. It is an 18" Zildjian China, other than that I have no idea. It is definitely a cast cymbal however.
Wow, I feel pretty dumb. It was suggested on mxdp that it was an inverted crash. Turns out it was. I have an 18" Zildjian crash now that I would appreciate any help with identifying.

Yeah, certainly looks like an inverted crash. Can you possibly get a better, more detailed picture of the stamp, and also measure how tall the stamp is? In addition, a better picture of the top of the cymbal would be good, one showing more detail of the bell and around the bell.
My first impression is that it may be no older than 1970s or 1980s, but we'll see if you can get a more detailed picture.

That was the best picture I could get of the stamp, all the other pictures came out bad. The stamp is roughly 1 1/2" tall.

Hm...if I were you I would shoot an e-mail to Zildjian, they're probably your likeliest source of finding someone who can tell you what cymbal it is.

This may be an inverted crash but more than likely, the cymbal has been flipped ( I don't know what to call it when this happens). The cymbal was more than likely a normal crash but cymbals can have the bow bent backwards. I don't know that it hurts the cymbal but I don't know that it won't. I would definitely take the prior suggestion of contacting Zildjian and send them as many pictures as possible .

I couldn't find an email address on their site. I am probably over looking it, but the contact page only has a snail mail address.

You posted almost the same time I did, but flipped = inverted. It has been "flipped" back to normal now, I just haven't taken any more pictures.

Hm...that's not cool...
Well, it seems you have 3 possible ways of contacting them.
1. Mail them your query.
2. Go to a Guitar Center or some other certified Zildjian dealer with your cymbal and see if they can hook you up with the right person (probably more likely of getting an answer this way than through the first way, but I would try both).
3. Try to sign up for their newsletter or whatever, find out the e-mail address that they use for that, and send a reply message with your query (probably won't get a reply, but worth a shot).
But yes, I really think they should have an e-mail address. Oh! Here's an idea! You could try to e-mail Sabian! If I'm not mistaken, they branched off from Zildjian in the early 80's (I want to say 1982...) so there's a chance that they would have been part of Zildjian when your cymbal was made. If not, that line may have existed when Sabian was part of Zildjian, so it's still worth a shot. Send them an e-mail, see what they can do for you; from my understanding they're a pretty courteous and helpful bunch.

If you do not see any "ghosting" of a Zildjian logo, either via the solid black logo or the "open style" logo Zildjian had between 1976 - '81, you probably have a cymbal made before 1975. The bell size shows that it is a crash sized cup and the weights for that style of 18" cymbal is as follows:
Thin Crash - under 3lbs, 2 oz.
Medium Thin Crash (also Crash Ride) - 3lbs, 2 oz. - 3lbs, 8 oz.
Medium Crash - 3lbs, 8 oz. - 3lbs, 12 oz
Rock Crash - Over 3lbs, 12 oz
Hope this helps

It actually helps a lot. Thank you. Now I just have to get hold of a scale that will measure in ounces. lol
