Ive had a crappy Zilco for ages. Saw some things on here, and decided to give it a good thwacking with a Ball Pointed hammer, now the thing sounds lovley.
Prognosis: Cymabals are overly fancyified apon, buy a cheap one and hit it with a hammer.

If I ever figure out a way to take high quality video I'm making a mini-tutorial on cymbal modding. It's on of my favorite things to do, It starts with tame stuff like rivets and hammering but then you start experimenting with substances like acid and beer and dirt and you really go crazy. Definitely helped me found my sound, because NO ONE has cymbals that sound like mine. I encourage everyone to go find some cheap cymbals and give em' hell!

that's actually really cool jazzsnob. I would be extremely interested in that video if you ever o it. I've never messed around with cymbal/drum modifications. But, for my budget, cymbal modifications would be really good for me :)

Well in that case, start buying every crap old cymbal or used cymbal you can find. I'll try and see if I can find a camera, it could be pretty fun.I was considering puting a video together anyway.

I was gonna mod some cymbals from my old groove percussion set becaus i was making room for a new set. But it turns out i sold them along with the set to just say "drum set that comes with everything". I was gonna use it as a frisbe if the modding didnt turn out well.

I'm gonna see if I can get a good sound out of my wuhan 8" splash. Will be going down to the anvil soon. (I do some blacksmithing in my spare time.)

I've used my crap cymbals as a frisbee once, didn't go to well- perhaps a serving dish may be better next time.
seriously, though, i'd like to see that video, see what new ideas i can get- i alread took my crappy old crash cymbal (more a piece of sheet metal), bent it, flipped it upside down, beat it with a hammer, and voila- pretty decent sounding crash cymbal- also, I hammered my old hihats (also, moreless pieces of sheet metal), and the went from useless to being china-hats.

The hammering was a great succes. Not after about 30 mins of work, I have an 8" Jeremy Watson Sig seires Splash/Ride. Nice and dry, but easily becomes a dark sounding splash.
Next thing to alter is my 12" china, what to do, what to do.... Maybe I can make a crashish type thing out of it.
