18x16kick: best head for big boom

i don't know what kind of sound you're looking for with an 18" kick in a guitar based band. but whatever head you are looking at, try it with no or little muffling (felt strips) and no hole on the reso.

I run Remo Powerstroke 3's both batter and reso. No port and nothing in the drum, on my 20x14 kick. I think that would work well on an 18x16. Nice punch with very little sustain.

If you are wanting a big boomy sound why don't move up to a 16" x 24" or even a 14" x 26" bass drum?

I have an 18" kick my self, and I play in a rockband. Small sizes are a bit tricky because it's gonna be a trade-off between low-end and volume:

1. you can get low-end by taking some tension off the tuning lugs, but that will cost you less volume: you can get mere volume by tuning the drum more tightly, but that will cost you the dessired low-end.

2. you can get more low-end by using thicker heads, but they are not as loud and not as responsive: you can get more volume and response by using thinner heads, but they don't have as much low-end.

Take some of the mufling out og the drum. Small drums are more focused by nature, so they don't really need as much muffling. I only use an Evans EQ-pad inside the drum and it tuches the batter-head.

I prefer the thin heads, because, when I take some of the tension off, I think I get the best trade-off between low-end and volume (punch!). I use Remo Clear Ambassador on the batter (as Simon Phillips says: it gives you most low-end), and a Remo Coated Ambassador on the front.

Still: many rooms kill the low-end and volume from such a small bassdrum. So here's what I finally did: I mounted a MAY/Shure Beta 52 inside the kick-drum, and I just plug the wire to the drum (from the outside) and connect the other end to the PA.

And it just works GREAT!! And I can get as much volume and low-end that I want... And I'm just bassically a very happy drummer now :-)
