I have a DW WORKSHOP Series kit. This kit is the limited edition all maple (Collection series) Shells, which came in only 3 colors. they offered it at a lower price than the collectors series kits. It sounds great. The only thing I don't like is this kit was discontinued right before PACIFIC drums were introduced and the lugs they used on my kit are the lugs they rolled into the pacific line. So it looks like I have Pacific drums instead of DW. Does anyone know anything about getting the Collectors series Lugs???
Thanks,
Sav

i, for one, have never heard of a company selling their lugs. It seems drum companies take great pride in their lug design -- and many (including DW) reserve their top kits with a different lug style. Because this is a large identifier of what type of kit it is, i would imagine that they would not want to sell them for fear of a kid putting DW lugs on his export and trying to sell it as a DW.

i think your only hope is to scan ebay daily.

This is exactly right!

one other viewpoint:

you could always either replace the lugs with similar lugs, like these (http://www.drummaker.net:3780/1-800-NEW-DRUM/www.DrumMaker.com/FMPro?-db=dm%5fproducts.fp5&-format=detailpop.htm&-lay=cgi&-sortfield=name&IDname=Chrome%20lug&-max=15&-recid=117&-token.0=13517833&-find=):

or just put nicer lugs on that are nothing to do with DW (if DW do let you buy them they will absolutely fleece you with the cost). Check out custom builder sites like drummaker.com and buy some mini tube lugs or something. Measure the holes left by yours and see what'll fit. Pacific lugs are pretty horrible, but then I can't stand DW lugs so it's all subjective.

That's a good suggestion. DW lugs are huge, the size of saucers. I wouldn't have anything like that on my set anyway - mine are single point tube lugs.

Oh good, I've finally found someone who agrees with me! They are pretty huge, which I think is such a shame when they make such lovely finishes - particularly on an 8 or 10" tom, when you've got some beautiful rustic fade and then they stick huge lugs and an even bigger wrap-around suspension system that so all you see is chrome/gold/satin chrome/black chrome stuck all over it...such a shame.

personally i like the lugs.... i prefer the lugs. They are unique to DW and to me they are the most recognizable lugs on any drum manufacturer.

Tube lugs are nice and all, but at least a dozen manufacturers use em -- hell, you can even buy them yourself and put them all over your own drum set. DW lugs are unique, and that's pretty cool.

true, like I say it's personal taste. Having said that, another thing that makes me dislike them is that whilst DW lugs are unique (apart from the old camco lugs they developed them from if my memory serves), DW drums are so widely used and seen that I think you see a lot less of the mini-tubes and the like than the DW's anyway! that's probably just where I live and who I see though...lol

its true that DW's lugs are bulky and kindof take away from those gorgeous finishes ... but at least that only makes a difference on small toms like the 8/10" toms! Like Fat Elvis, I still think they look pretty cool and they're what make DW drums instantly recognizable (besides the gorgeous finishes ... I don't get why Sonor is the only other manufacturer to make amazing finishes like DW! How have the other guys not caught on?)

while it is true that you will see a lot of DW lugs if you see a lot of DW's, but you instantly know it is a DW. Tube lugs are cool looking as well, but unless there is a big ol' logo on the kick drum head, you still will have no idea who made those drums.

I like the look of the DW lugs myself. As far as buying the lugs from them, I think that (but am not certain) that these are patented in order to keep brand identification less confusing (which Fat Elvis hinted at with his comments about the tube lugs), which is the right of the patentholder. I am fairly certain that DW has intellectual property rights on the lug design and, thus it may be a design patent. I couldn't find anything about it on the DW website but I did find the trademark information.

yeah, I guess I kinda like that though - I deliberately don't have a logo BD head for that very reason - I don't want people to judge me based on what brand I play. Anyway, as I said it's all subjective...In fact, to the average audience member, it makes literally no difference. My main kit has slingerland teardrop lugs on it, and so many sound-guys and guitarists have come up and said "wow, awesome set, is that a DW" afterwards it's just not funny! The only people who know/actuallycare are other drummers and you, the player.

As far as what aahznightsky said about finishes - other brands do them, what you have to bear in mind is that DW only make top price, top level drums - they don't have any cheaper ranges (forget pacific for a tick). If you check out the equivalent ranges - pearl masterworks (stunning limitless finishes - actually a lot more variety and choices than DW for substantially less money!) for example there are other brands doing them. At the end of the day, I'm always disapointed with DW because I think for a "custom" drum company they actually offer far too few options and finishes. They do offer a lot more than yamaha and tama though, I'll give you that.
