Going Remo the right choice?

Hey guys, I am going to get a new drumset soon, a vintage Ludwig (maple 3-ply) with 13x9 and 16x16 toms with a 20x16 bass drum. I want a real jazzy sound, so what heads should I get? I think I'm gonna with coated ambassadors all the way around and then a felt strip on the BD. Is the felt strip the way to go? Let me know what you guys think, or some other ways to go about it.

For an ultra jazzy sound: go for it!! I`ve also got coated ambassadors after the Evans G1...and I like the Remo much better! so classical and such a good sound...

but you should also check out some other stuff maybe like Evans J1 (the J stands for Jazz), J1 are thin very very open sounding Jazz heads, not roo coated, rather "milky" coated, the sound is a mix between clear and coated head, cool sound as far as I know.

anothe one would be Aquarian heads...maybe "Modern Vintage"?

I have recently switched to Aquarians, after being almost 'pushed' into it but Im really liking them! Definitely use what other people have done as a starting point but feel free to try new ways of skinning/tuning aswell.

I agree with drummer Karl - This is great for the classic sound! I don't know if Remo even makes them anymore, but the fyberskyn series was pretty good too. I believe that the designation of FA is the Ambassador weight.

Thanks guys your advice is great. Another thing to consider is the size of my toms. I want that jazzy sound, but I am afraid that using ambassadors on 13x9 and 16x16 toms is going to have the sound be too open. Any input?

Don't worry about it. You can always moon-gel/sticky hand the heads to control that if you can't achieve exactly what you want with just a tuning key. Make sure that you post pics of these Luddies as soon as you get them. I'm jealous.

Don't be...they are EXTREMELY ugly. It's the old green sparkle that was notorious for it's uneven fading. It's differently shaded all over the drum practically. Yuck. Hopefully it will sound glorious though.

less decay sound.
I also use felt strips on the BD, works for me but I hear its kinda out dated.

remos are pretty nice i would recommend aquarian over remo though. but thats just me .

Hey Dad!

This isn't outdated as you think! I have been playing recording sessions with a kit (not mine) with this set-up which the enigineer and producer prefer! Steve Smith also prefered this method and is the sound you hear on "Separate Ways" on the Frontiers album along with the very first Vital Information album. This is as punchy as you can get!

I was supposed to get a powerstroke 3 bass head from my uncle but he messed things up and got me a ambassador bass head instead.

I am not totally satisfied with my ambassador probably because i prefer to play rock most of the time when i drum. Now in the rarest incidence where i might jump into a jazz groove...well lets just say, heel down...road smooth...bass drum = sweet. Its a jazz players head and since you want to play jazz then i think its perfect.
