I bought a new Mapex Saturn 8 pc. kit last May. For those that aren't familiar, the Saturns are Maple, with two plies of Walnut as the innermost plies. This is supposed to give the sheels a larger range of tunability as opposed to standard maple shells. It does.

I've always been impressed with the killer sound of Mapex BD. My Saturn was an exception. No matter how I tuned it, I couldn't make it sound focused, but resonant and deep. I was using a Evans EMAD 2 batter, with a Remo Powerstroke 3 with 5" hole.

I had recently noticed that my guitarist has a knack for making his BDs on all his kits (he owns a music store) sound fantastic.

I used his recommendation of Aquarian Superkick II. Wow. What a difference. My BD woke up like it was supposed to. I tried it with both the Remo, and a new Aquarian Ebony Regulator with a 4 3/4" offset hole. The Remo is in the closet with the Evans now.

I'm driving my bandmates crazy playing my BD, it sounds incredible. No muffling, either.

I also went from the EMAD 2 to the Aquarian Superkick 2 and have never looked back.

Do you muffle your drum with the Superkick?

the only two kick drum heads i swear by are the emad's and the superkick II.
i just recently put a superkick II on my ludwig birch and it sounds phenomenal.

no other muffling...no need for it.

I tend to agree.

I ran a Superkick II and a Regulator for the past year and switched to an EMAD II and EMAD reso a couple of weeks ago. The EMAD heads have a slightly rounder sound than the Superkick combo. A little more resonance.

Either way both of these head combinations are a great way to go.

I prefer to use single ply heads, especially on kick drums. SK1, EMAD, P3, or EQ4 for me.

I recently put on the SuperKick II on my batter and Aquarian Regulator with offset hole on my Mapex Saturn and wow. I thought my kick sounded good before...this thing rocks now...so focused and so clear....i always get great compliments on my kick drum from the sound guys at the venues with my previous setup (EMAD batter, PS3 reso w/ hole)...cant wait to hear what they say now... i love it...

I just bought an emad 2 for $40
and the SK1&2 were both $40 also.

I am going from a SKll to an EMAD, my SKll outer ply tore but I think it was due to a stupid metal patch I put on it and I probably had it way to tight, I never really did like the sound.

I thought about trying an SKl but decided to try out the EMAD instead, even though it was most likely my fault I am a little leary of the SK's for the time being.

Since Aquarian heads are nearly not available at all in Germany I got an EMAD head for my bassdrum and I was astonished by the sound. It adds a whole new dimension of deeeeepness to the sound. I even like the sound of it recorded with the tiny mic in my laptop.
I use the biggest of the muffling rings and a blanket inside because the drumset is in my room and I don't want to upset my neighbours more than anyway.

i played on a bandmate's brother's pearl export today which had an emad. it sounded

pretty nice, but not nice enough for me to stray from a superkick. the toms on the other

hand... let's just say i could tell he was a hard hitter, and didn't have to ask that he hadn't

changed the pearl heads that came on the drums (two years ago).
